Subject: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize)
From: jeffp
Date: 27 Oct 06 - 10:53 AM

I've got something lighthearted I'd like to research a bit to check out a tendency I've noticed. I have two questions I'd like answered by folks who are willing:

1. What is your gender?

2. When you eat corn on the cob, do you eat across like a typewriter or round and round the cob? If you eat it at random, like someone I know, please specify that too.

Thanks a bunch.

Jeff

M.....and an M who probably eats more than most per sitting than either gender. Generally 8-10 ears per sitting during corn season and has been known to eat as many as 20+ at one meal. ALWAYS AROUND with lower teeth doing the work.

I have survived another July thru September without Karen divorcing me however she learned long ago and rarely sits at the same table when I eat corn.

*visualizing Pat eating corn"....so, this means rotating the cob downwards toward the lower teeth, and peeling the corn like a machine, feeding the kernels to the grinding mechanism?

That may be a whole category in itself....

M - Round and round and I'm from Iowa which grows more corn than any other state, so there. Of course, most of it is field corn and gets fed to livestock or made into corn sweetener but what the hey (or hay).

It's totally strange and pointless. Just my curiosity. I had noticed a gender difference among friends and family in the approach to eating corn on the cob and wanted a larger sample size. That's all. I won't identify the trend I noticed because I don't want to possibly skew the results any more than they would be skewed by the weird group I'm surveying.

Thanks for playing along folks!!! I'll report results in a few days, although the local results don't seem to be greatly reflected so far.

Jeff

Hey Bill......Me eating corn is not a pretty sight, or so I'm told. Yeah, the cob rotates downward with the upper teeth moving it along while the lowers scrape the cob clean. I seem to eat too fast and my lips don't seal well around the corn so you get the occasional squirt of fluid when the kernels pop. It also seems that this happens often enough that no one who knows me will sit anywhere's near close during the feeding.

It is hard to describe how much I love fresh sweet corn..........but you get the idea.

Male, round the cob, from the left to the right end. I also use corn cob holders, and roll the ear over a stick of butter, rather than apply the butter with a knife. No salt or pepper.

The yellow corn from North Jersey was not that good this year, but the white corn from South Jersey was excellent.

F- very rarely eat it on the cob, but mostly typewriter when I do, with some forays up or down into the next row; actually I think I go up-down from over two or more rows at a time! I prefer to scrape it off and eat it with a spoon.

Spawdarlin'...I think you have even my Rog beat! Thye say, though, you haven't lived until you've had Olathe Sweet Corn!. Also, see Corn is King in Colorado!

Sorry, got distracted. I meant to mention that I also use my lower teeth as a sort of a hook to roll the cobb and my upper teeth as a scoop to shovel the kernels down my throat. I do a complete revolution witrhout stopping. Eating corn is one of those pig-in-shit activities where no decorum is expected or volunteered.

CORN - is not something for human consumption.

CORN - is eaten by swine and cattle.

The slaughtered meat, of the corn eating beast, may then be eaten, circular, singular, dimetrical, symetrical, with frozen vegitables or without.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

f-typewriter style
no bell dings at the end of the row..

the first row eaten is bitten off the cob
the kernals in successive rows are neatly
pried out by rolling cob against lower teeth
as above...leaves cleaner cob and cleaner teeth.

F- I've forgotten.

In Oregon I grew my own corn and literally put a pot of water to heating while I went out to break off some ears. In Alaska where all sweet corn is flown or barged from 'down south' I don't bother. I haven't tasted corn on the cob in years.

M typewriter, usually three rows at a time.

Corn is wind pollinated. A very small patch often doesn't produce full ears. Small plantings tyupically do better if planted in hills or blocks rather than a couple long rows

F. I usually start in a straight line but then I'll vary it - roll it around for awhile, then back to the typewriter.
I don't know why. Just for variety, I guess. I like making patterns.

Female last time I checked.

I start at one end and go around lathe style. I use a skewer or a fork in one end and my fingers steadying the other. I use an upwards motion to the cob, slicing the kernels off with my upper teeth. I occasionally pause to roll the cob in the melted butter on the plate.

Limpit, also female and the child of her mother, also uses the skewere and hand method, but will start in the middle and work outwards in a 'scatter gun' approach, the same method she uses for the butter.

We don't have cob corn very often.

held in hands, started eating at one end & ate around, then moved down a bit & did same.

Then I removed my glasses as I was squirting corn juice all over my face.

I moved down a bit again & chewed around again, finally I cleaned up the omitted bits.

newly BBQd corn is YUMMY!! Tho I could have done with some butter.

Male, I've been led to believe.

I eat typewriter style.   In fact, I've never (to my knowledge) known anyone who ate it round and round.

But it MUST BE VERY FRESHLY PICKED! The ideal is to start your boiling water, then run to the corn patch and pick and run it back to the water! It starts to lose flavor immediately when picked.
