Subject: Tech: Max - problem with Filter
From: Joe Offer
Date: 30 Oct 06 - 09:51 PM

I've been receiving messages from people who've had trouble finding threads. One was the Gainsborough Folk Club PermaThread, which now shows up in the filter because I posted a message in it.

I can't quite put my finger on what the problem is, so I've posted this as a thread so other people can post descriptions of problems they've had using the Filter to find threads.

Anybody?

-Joe-

Well, I found the Spirituals permathread without any trouble at all, and did a tiny bit of the cleanup work in it which seemed to go fine.

.... but the Thread Name Game current thread didn't show. So I did what Joe did-- post and re-filter-- and it showed up.

'Scuse me. What's the filter?

Mother of All BS threads is several thousand posts light. . . if anyone other than the regulars cares, that is. We amuse ourselves, stay out of trouble, and occasionally reinvent the planet. It would be nice to be back to our robust 14,700+ posts from the puny 8106 where we find ourselves now. All of the messages seem to be there, but the count is wrong.

This said, I certainly applaud the perseverance and resourcefulness it has taken to get things back in a more ordered existence. Thanks again, everyone!

Stilly -

People have noted that "exercising" a thread restores proper function.

This is probably because a new action within the thread allows the database to "pack" data about the files in the database.

MOABS might return to a proper count as soon as someone has actually opened, completetly, all of the pages at the same time and made a post.

Apparently just opening the "last 50"" and posting doesn't do it, but it's possible that just opening - completely - each of the pages, with a post at the end would reindex the thread.(?)

Quite obviously one like myself on dialup can't reasonably be expected to do this, however one of you people with a fast connection and a lot of memory could try.

(Odds of it really working aren't great; but it would certainly keep at least one of the MOABS devotees too busy to whine for a while?)

John

The database certainly seems inconsistent.

I don't know if this is a different symptom with a common cause, but on my personal page I have a link to our gigs thread which says there are 5 messages in it - but there are more than that!

Anglo -

The "filter" in this discussion is the little box at the top of the thread index (Lyrics and Knowledge) page, next to the "Refresh" button.

If you put a word or phrase that might appear in the thread title in the box, and then set to go back for some time, when you hit refresh you'll get only the threads that contain that word/phrase in the thread title.

Mostly used to find a thread that's dropped off the page, which happens if there are no new posts in 24 hours.

Anahata -

Have you tried posting a "refresh" in your thread to see if it will unscramble the pointers?

John

Terry, that is not something new. I tried that once for some reason quite some time ago, and quickly realised that 1000 posts is all it will load, regardless of the date.

If you put something into the filter to narrow the field, it will go back as far as you want - up to the limit of 1000 posts. So what you noticed has nothing to do with the latest fix.

Mick, did you actually open MOAB all the way? How long did it take? I saved the file in the print friendly mode and it is humongous. A couple of days ago I tried opening early pages 50 at a time and notice no improvement.

Try not using software that was outdated in 1996...

SRS - I didn't take any notice of the time before, but I just reopened it (everything from 5May03 to MMario at 11:25AM on 31Oct06) and it took about 7 minutes to load.

Dang Mick - that didn't take any time at all. I figured it would keep you all occupied for a lot longer than that.

Maybe somebody needs to count all the posts and make sure we know which number is wrong?

Reports have been that just opening a thread doesn't seem to do anything. When you have it all open, you need to post to the thread to get any result (according to some previous comments, at least).

I did post to MOABS earlier (I never thought I'd ever open it, let alone post to it) - it increased the count by 1!

The 85 billion thread has had problems too. It had 500,201 posts and now it's dropped to just 674. Can you just credit the posts please, no need to worry about the post material. Thanks and we'll say no more about it.

Mom will be having her 3.5 birthday in just a few days. I figure that makes her the equivilant of "three score and ten" - not that I would mention a ladies age, and MOM is most certainly a lady.

Makes you think, though, doesn't it? Many websites don't last 3 and 1/2 years, heck, some of them don't last 3.5 months!

and this thread is going to be 3.5!!!!

I do know of one other website that suffered a major crash at about the same time as the "bigun" at the 'cat. The webmeister there brought in a new server and a newer version of the database, but apparently couldn't figure how to port the old stuff into the new one. Considering that he passes himself off as a "leading member" of the technology, and quite obviously moves among the "most knowledgeable" in communications and venture capital circles, it wouldn't seem he'd lack for flunkies to do it for him if needed.

NOTHING prior to the crash has been restored, and there's no real evidence of intent to do so; although he assures everyone that "nothing has been lost." Immediately prior to the crash that web site was running at about 20 posts per hour, 24 hours per day. With allowance for "lookers" who weren't posting, that's a lot of traffic for a "hobby site." It's been stable enough to creep back up to about 20 posts per day recently, but seems pretty much abandoned by the owner - who has started at least 3 other sites since that one crashed (that I know of), none of which are likely to survive long.

(Posts there are numbered, and running in the 390,000 range now, after a little less than 3 years; but only about 60,000? are accessible.)

I've seen four or five other sites that "looked interesting" and seemed to be growing; but their owners "lost interest," often in as little as six months: and the sites disappeared.

The contrast does make one really appreciate the work that we know has been going on to try to bring the 'cat up and forward, with limited time and resources.

Thanks again, Max and Jeff - and all the clones.

John

As long as there are two MOAB threads (and there are no other threads with duplicates, as far as I can tell) I think we won't be able to push start the counter.
