Ernest, b&b is not that popular in Germany, but there's one round the corner, on the way to Hof Akkerboom. I could ask them for you. Also, the Kiel website includes a link to the local tourist office where you'll find more accommodation. I'll PM you with the details of that first b&b, but not before the weekend, I'm afraid.

Wilfried, you're welcome to the Akkerboom appleyard, of course, but my balcony may be more comfortable. Don't worry, we'll work something out.

I haven't arranged any meals or anything yet. Maybe we should start a new thread for the detailed planning. We could start it with another roll call, including mode of transport and accommodation.

In the UK, usually, the first Monday in May is the "May Bank holiday" (and afaik a/k/a "Labour day").

In Germany, it is not a holiday ("Labour Day" in Germany is always the first of May)

Just to get you all ready for May read this.

Subject: Language lesson.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing public enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, public akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will encourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the language is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer, people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

Kiel Week is not a navy meeting but mainly a sailing event. Nowadays, however, it has taken on the character of a fun fair with an awful lot awfully lound (and sometimes awful) music. Still, it's something not to be missed if you're a sailing enthusiast or just like having a good time. Unfortunately, it starts about a month after the Eurogathering.

And beside the university, we have a technical college and an art college, 52 schools, two public art galleries and three museums that I can think of right now. And the countryside roundabout is beautiful. However, nothing beats the view of the water.

Fidjit, what do you mean - you'll be on the Gothenburg ferry? You're supposed to be in Kiel!

The Kiel Canal was formerly called Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal.
In this times the Infantry Regiment Nr 85 was stationed in Kiel. Since then all Army soldiers are called 85ers by the Navy (even today!).
Every year ther is a great international navy meeting called the Kiel Week.

Oh, and Kiel has a University.

Chas, at least you know Kiel is on the Kiel Canal (locally called the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, or North Sea-Baltic-Canal)= water. It's also on the Baltic via Kiel Firth = more water. It has an attractive venue (though not exclusively folk) in Hof Akkerboom. And, most important of all: It has me as a citizen. What else do you need to know? :-))

The Asgard (Åsgård, in Norwegian) A Colin Archer. Was a wedding present by his future father-in-law to Erskine and Molly Childers.

Well in Erskine Childers, "Riddle if the Sands", the Dulcibella got a tow through the Kiel Canal by a tug.

The Dulcebella (or rather the Aasgaard) is a Colin Archer boat built in Norway.
Dulcebella/Aasgaard was used by Childers for gun running from Belgium to Howth.
Childers was shot by firing squad on November 2nd.1922.
The Dulcebella/Aasgaard is now in prison!
Not really.
The prison is in Dublin and has been turned into a museum.

About Kiel? Not enough obviously.

As I said above, there is enough parking space round my house for all of you. There may even be room for Doug's tent somewhere.

My offer of help was meant precisely to help you find places not too far away. As Kiel is a popular holiday destination (particularly for people who aren't confined to school holidays any more) the cheaper rooms may fill up quickly.

Anyway, one space in my flat is reserved for Andy. Though he hasn't said so, I count him in as a certainty. Wilfried, if you agree to sleep on the floor, not spit on the same, and not molest the cat you're welcome.   There'd be room (just) for a couple more, and if the weather is warm another two or three could sleep on the big balcony.

Other than that, a good hotel and a b&b can be found on the way to the venue. No official campsites near, but we'll find a way if necessary. The backpackers' hostel is not too far away from the venue either, and I think there is a car park for mobile homes somewhere near.

Something else:
Some of you have indicated interest in the cruise with buffet lunch. I'd have to book that fairly soon as it is much in demand. However, it costs 35 Euros, and some others may think twice about that. I suggest we take the comparatively cheap boat trip across the firth and find a place to eat there that may suit everybody's purse. I wouldn't like the group to split up because of money.

Any comments?

I'm not really bothered about what level of accommodation I have, so long as it's close to the action – preferably within walking distance.

I have a tent but could make do with a corner of someone's floor. I don't mind paying for a B&B or hotel but I don't want to be stuck in remote luxury if everyone else is making music into the early hours.

Susanne, could you please PM me some details of campsites and B&B's with some idea of their locations relative to the proposed music venues?

Anyway, there is an IKEA store right round the corner from me - get them to send you there, and make it the right weekend. :-)

As to cost, you'll have to find out the cost of flights yourself, I'm not very good at this. The only time I've flown was to Hull and back for the 2004 (?) Eurogathering, and I relied heavily on Wolfgang's superior knowledge. train or bus fares over here are not exactly cheap, but affordable, and maybe a lift can be organised for you. Accommodation can be anything from the floor of my house or a tent (free), a backpackers' hostel, the local youth hostel (reasonable) or b&b (affordable) to hotels of several categories. What do you think is most in your line? Send me a PM and I'll try and check it out for you over Christmas.

I'll put the results on the Mudcat for everybody's use in good time.

Attendance statistics so far - 1 certain (me!), 14 probable, 7 maybe (one of which is Skarpi - I never give up). No bad for a start.

The room is booked for the Saturday night. We just need to work out what to do with it. I've spoken to some of the dance people, and they think a ceilidh on Saturday night would gather a good crowd. However, they suggest some thorough planning because apparently it isn't that easy playing along with somebody else's dance music (they play Scandinavian and French music mainly). I think we should leave this to be cleared up between the musicians nearer the date.

I also booked for the Sunday afternoon, for a session with any of the Kiel musicians who feel like coming along. Again, details to be worked out later on.

Saturday lunchtime: My first idea was crossing the water to a place called Laboe by ferry (about an hour either way). I've just learned that there would be a chance of travelling virtually the same route, though a bit further out into the Baltic, and back to Kiel, between 10.30 am to 1 pm, on an old paddle steamer and in the company of a magnificent buffet (I know, I've done it before), for 37.50 euros. That's certainly more than we'd have to spend on the Laboe trip, but would anybody be interested? We'd have to book soon because those trips are very popular.

And would anybody be interested in a little city tour around Sunday lunchtime, including a visit up the Town Hall steeple? I'd have to find out whether that's possible on a Sunday.

Danish would be great. We have several musicians and dancers interested in Danish and Swedish music, also some feeling at home on the Balkans. Let your ideas flow so that I can give my friends over here an idea of what to expect.

Might we split it up? Reserve the Saturday for the ceilidh - with songs, of course, but mainly dancing - and have a session on the Sunday afternoon? (Just in case, may I remind the British contingent of the fact that Germany has no May Day Bank Holiday, and most of the Germans have to be back at work on the Monday.)

The format is more or less up to you, though we don't have a 'ceilidh' tradition. Folk dancing and sessions tend to be quite separate activities over here, though if anyone wants to teach the local talent the Dashing White Sergeant I suppose no one would protest. Also, the sessions tend to lean towards the instrumental, though this is changing. Trouble is, the acoustics of the room don't lend themselves to singing, and we have few people with strong enough voices to overcome this.

Anyway, we'll see. I for one wouldn't mind a bit more singing, and I can always remember lyrics best when others are singing along ...

Kiel it will be, then, on the weekend 4 - 6 May. I'll try and make the programme live up to past Eurogatherings. What we've got so far:

Fri 4 May - Dick Gaughan concert at Bad Segeberg for all who are interested. Need to organise transport because it's a good half hour from Kiel.

Sat 5 May - day: boat trip across Kiel Firth from Kiel to Laboe and back, again for all who'd like to come (one way takes about an hour, we could have lunch at Laboe and also go to see the submarine memorial)
evening: session at Hof Akkerboom in Kiel with local musicians

Sun 6 May - we'll see.

Next: gather addresses for accommodation so that people can book.

Directions: Kiel is on (the end of) a motorway, the A215 branching off the A7. It is served by intercity trains, and - as I've said - the nearest airports are Hamburg-Fuhlsbuettel and Luebeck, which is used by Ryanair. There is a rail link between Luebeck and Kiel (again, about an hour).

Hello all

Much has passed since I last posted. Our move to the Orkney Islands has gone well, though I am in limbo betwixt Cleckheaton (for school)) and Selby (for lodgings). I can't wait until 23rd December when my family and I are re-united on South Ronaldsay and there I shall stay. This may well prove to be the site of a eurogathering for the future. I should like to attend the next gathering as I have missed the last two ! I will need to make travel plans as getting off the islands can prove expensive, though I will have lots of time for travel since I shall not be in regular work. I shall run this idea past Mrs Viking who is at this moment is talking to me via the telephone. I still have to earn a crust and must return to beating children at school.

I shall look back to gain more information as to where the location is.

Asked them tonight - the house seems to be free on Sat 5 May for a joint session with the local talent, with or without audience. As nobody else has been forthcoming, can I take it as read that the 2007 Eurogathering will take place in Kiel? I'll have to tell them soon, or the house will be booked for something else.

Kiel being on the Baltic, I'd suggest a trip across the water on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. A sighteeing tour through the city may not be all that rewarding, but I'll think about it.

Some additional info:
Liz, it's hard to tell in advance, but from my experience the necessity of thermal vests in May is highly unlikely. Motorhomes are becoming unsettlingly frequent on local roads from the Easter holidays right through to September, and I've never yet heard of people using them freezing to death. As far as I know they come with central heating ... Scrump may not realise it, but whisky is actually cheaper in Germany than in Scotland, due to the difference in duties on spirits. And we now have some very discerning pub landlords where whisky is concerned. Any suggestions as to what should be ordered beforehand? (I'd prefer to save my personal stock of Macallan's, Bowmore and Edradour for the winter.)

For those of you not bringing motorhomes, tents etc., Kiel is a city of 330,000, with a youth hostel, a backpackers' hostel, a good range of hotels and quite a few guest houses to suit all your tastes and purses, I think. Transport may present some problems if you all insist on flying or 'training' in ... :-), but I'm sure we'll come up with a solution.

I fancy Kiel, and if I get to meet some of you, I fancy it very much. It can be a bit windy up there, but I am sure there will be bolt holes for Mudcatters to meet, drink and sing. People could fly Ryanair into Luebeck (who call it Hamburg, but it's anything but ...), which is a train ride away from Kiel - just under an hour, I believe, and very scenic, in a flat sort of way.

In that case, I could offer you a visit to a Dick Gaughan gig only half an hour away on the Friday night, plus I could try to have a local 'Irish Night' scheduled for Saturday. (That's one of our regular big sessions of local folk musicians - whether of the Irish, Scottish or Scandinavian persuasion ... - who'd be delighted to have a crowd of musically skilled foreign guests). The biggest problem would be accommodation because my flat won't take more than half a dozen, and those must not be allergic to cats!

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind that much if 2007 took place in Scotland, even though that would mean missing DG over here! Should we start a new thread for a proper vote?

How apposite that you raise the matter, Betty, as only yesterday I learned that our potential hostess is happily up the duff, and as the bairn is due in late April, probably the last thing she will want in early May is a farmyard full of the greatest unwashed playing homemade music and singing songs about church fires.

I was going to send a round robin PM to the exclsuive club of previous organisers, but it is better to open up the discussion to all potential organisers and attendees now.

Any ideas?

Just a brief update. I have sown the seed for our next Eurogathering with my friends in Cassano D'Adda, east of Milan, and the guarded response wasn't negative, so hopefully it'll be a runner. If it runs, Bergamo Airport is the closest, or Venice if you are coming on the Orient Express.
