Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Nov 06 - 08:40 PM Asked them tonight - the house seems to be free on Sat 5 May for a joint session with the local talent, with or without audience. As nobody else has been forthcoming, can I take it as read that the 2007 Eurogathering will take place in Kiel? I'll have to tell them soon, or the house will be booked for something else. Kiel being on the Baltic, I'd suggest a trip across the water on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. A sighteeing tour through the city may not be all that rewarding, but I'll think about it. Welcome on board, Fibs - glad there are no faraway conferences in the way. And do go on persuading skarpi there is a way if he really wants to come. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: alanabit Date: 28 Nov 06 - 12:59 AM It has been a few years since I ventured that far north. What do you drink up there, Holstein Pils, Flens? Keep me posted. It sounds like it's going to be a good craic. |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: GUEST,Eric the Viking-silent for a while ! Date: 29 Nov 06 - 03:37 AM Hello all Much has passed since I last posted. Our move to the Orkney Islands has gone well, though I am in limbo betwixt Cleckheaton (for school)) and Selby (for lodgings). I can't wait until 23rd December when my family and I are re-united on South Ronaldsay and there I shall stay. This may well prove to be the site of a eurogathering for the future. I should like to attend the next gathering as I have missed the last two ! I will need to make travel plans as getting off the islands can prove expensive, though I will have lots of time for travel since I shall not be in regular work. I shall run this idea past Mrs Viking who is at this moment is talking to me via the telephone. I still have to earn a crust and must return to beating children at school. I shall look back to gain more information as to where the location is. Tata for now |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Wolfgang Date: 29 Nov 06 - 04:58 AM Eric, South Ronaldsey is too easy to travel to for a weekend, why not Fair Isle a bit further North? Orkney is one of the places I shall revisit as soon as I shall be a pensioneer. I've even been on South Ronaldsey for as long as the ship stopped there. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: GUEST,Noreen Date: 29 Nov 06 - 06:25 AM Eric, you don't do things by halves! Looking forward to the South Ronaldsay Gathering 2008... |

Mrs P and I are celebratin' 17 happy years next April 6th (We've been married 25 but 17 of them wez really happy!!!) so a trip abroad seems a good idea. Aah asked hor what she'd like for Christmas and she said she'd like a coat made from real animal skin - Keep it quiet but aah've bought hor a donkey jacket! What an aad romantic eh??? |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:46 AM Kiel it will be, then, on the weekend 4 - 6 May. I'll try and make the programme live up to past Eurogatherings. What we've got so far: Fri 4 May - Dick Gaughan concert at Bad Segeberg for all who are interested. Need to organise transport because it's a good half hour from Kiel. Sat 5 May - day: boat trip across Kiel Firth from Kiel to Laboe and back, again for all who'd like to come (one way takes about an hour, we could have lunch at Laboe and also go to see the submarine memorial) evening: session at Hof Akkerboom in Kiel with local musicians Sun 6 May - we'll see. Next: gather addresses for accommodation so that people can book. Directions: Kiel is on (the end of) a motorway, the A215 branching off the A7. It is served by intercity trains, and - as I've said - the nearest airports are Hamburg-Fuhlsbuettel and Luebeck, which is used by Ryanair. There is a rail link between Luebeck and Kiel (again, about an hour). Contact me outside the Mudcat via skw at worldmusic dot de or phone me at 0431 / 687332. More in good time. I'm looking forward to this! |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 02 Dec 06 - 05:15 PM I just realised my last post is rather misleadingly worded. What I meant was "If you need to contact me, please use ..." You don't have to make individual personal applications in order to be allowed to attend! :-) And I forgot to mention that I'll ask the people at Hof Akkerboom whether we'll be allowed to put up tents in their appleyard, and that there is more than enough room for motorhomes outside my house. |

All the rest - I haven't dug out addresses for accommodation yet, and I'll be out every night till Friday, so please bear with me till the weekend ... |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Fidjit Date: 05 Dec 06 - 11:49 AM OK so what's the format? Sessions, sing arounds? performance? Will there be a ceilidh? I'd like a ceilidh. Chas |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 05 Dec 06 - 09:30 PM Shut up, you! You're not going to turn this into Loughstock! :-) The format is more or less up to you, though we don't have a 'ceilidh' tradition. Folk dancing and sessions tend to be quite separate activities over here, though if anyone wants to teach the local talent the Dashing White Sergeant I suppose no one would protest. Also, the sessions tend to lean towards the instrumental, though this is changing. Trouble is, the acoustics of the room don't lend themselves to singing, and we have few people with strong enough voices to overcome this. Anyway, we'll see. I for one wouldn't mind a bit more singing, and I can always remember lyrics best when others are singing along ... For all those eager to start, go to www.kiel.de and click on 'Touristik' on the left. This gives you a little idea of what the area is like, and there are links to hotels, the youth hostel etc. for those who don't bring their own accommodation. If any questions arise, don't hesitate to email me and ask them! |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Fidjit Date: 06 Dec 06 - 05:36 AM I'll sing. I can teach some English Country Dances too. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: bfdk Date: 06 Dec 06 - 08:22 AM I'd like to second Fidjit's wish for a ceilidh. I know that Skip is at present working his fingers to the bone learning a Danish tune called "Baglæns Kontrasejre". I happen to know the steps for that 8-some, so would be able to instruct, if a sufficient number of people were interested :-) Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 06 Dec 06 - 06:12 PM Thanks for the link, Noreen. I clean forgot. Danish would be great. We have several musicians and dancers interested in Danish and Swedish music, also some feeling at home on the Balkans. Let your ideas flow so that I can give my friends over here an idea of what to expect. Might we split it up? Reserve the Saturday for the ceilidh - with songs, of course, but mainly dancing - and have a session on the Sunday afternoon? (Just in case, may I remind the British contingent of the fact that Germany has no May Day Bank Holiday, and most of the Germans have to be back at work on the Monday.) Anyway, Bente, can I count you in? Seeing our customary counter seems to have left us ... ANDY, WHERE ARE YOU! Oh, and shall we have a raffle? Or just a whip round? If the former, please think of suitable prizes to bring for it (but only if that doesn't make travelling too inconvenient). Shaping up nicely, it seems! |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Fidjit Date: 06 Dec 06 - 07:07 PM Ceilidh music no problem. I've loads of cds with the music. Only need a cd player. Of course it would be nice to make our own music too. So start practicing your 32, 48 and 64 bar jigs and reels. Plus a waltz or two. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Ernest Date: 07 Dec 06 - 02:33 AM Can we have a saturday session for the non-dancers please? And Bente: are you going to bring Milloup along? I always like to meet nice dachshunds... Best Ernest |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Wolfgang Date: 07 Dec 06 - 10:25 AM With Danish Mudcatters coming we might have a chance to have the Eurogathering 2009 (Scotland: 2008) somewhere in Denmark? Skarpi, sorry, you have offered Iceland before Kiel, Scotland etc., but it is just very far away for a weekend. Wolfgang (who will be coming to Kiel) |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Llanfair Date: 07 Dec 06 - 12:26 PM Oh crikey, I've missed such a lot!! Eric in Orkney!! Brilliant!! Noreen, who is Stewart?, Liz, how's Little Bit?, Skip, still going strong, as is Andy!! It's so nice to see everyone planning yet another gathering. I would love to come, but it depends on the state of the aged parents. They need a lot of care, now. I'll keep an eye on the state of play, Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 07 Dec 06 - 05:43 PM Welcome back, Bron! Would be great if you could make it, but your parents come first, of course. Chas, I don't think canned noise was the idea, even for the ceilidh - but that's for the musicians to say, and I'm not ... |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Dec 06 - 05:44 PM No definitely no canned music, live or not at all surely! G. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 08 Dec 06 - 02:34 AM No cans, please. Don't we have instruments and voices enough? |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: bfdk Date: 08 Dec 06 - 04:55 AM Hey, I'm just *one* Dane, as far as I know.. But, yes, if nothing happens to prevent it, I'd say you can count me in :-) Ernest, I'd like to bring Milloup, but I rather think I won't, if his usual minders can take him in for the weekend. He has a way of getting under your feet, and the combination of a dachshund who thinks the world revolves around him and lots of dancing feet is probably not such a good one.. Dancewise, don't forget the odd polka, hopsa and Schottische.. :-) Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Ernest Date: 08 Dec 06 - 11:52 AM I`d definitely prefer a dachshound to a dance, bente ;0) And live music to cans - but I would allow cookie tin banjos, washtub basses etc. Best wishes Ernest |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Fidjit Date: 08 Dec 06 - 03:20 PM Think we have a live set in the pipeline. let you know later. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 10 Dec 06 - 08:04 PM Attendance statistics so far - 1 certain (me!), 14 probable, 7 maybe (one of which is Skarpi - I never give up). No bad for a start. The room is booked for the Saturday night. We just need to work out what to do with it. I've spoken to some of the dance people, and they think a ceilidh on Saturday night would gather a good crowd. However, they suggest some thorough planning because apparently it isn't that easy playing along with somebody else's dance music (they play Scandinavian and French music mainly). I think we should leave this to be cleared up between the musicians nearer the date. I also booked for the Sunday afternoon, for a session with any of the Kiel musicians who feel like coming along. Again, details to be worked out later on. Saturday lunchtime: My first idea was crossing the water to a place called Laboe by ferry (about an hour either way). I've just learned that there would be a chance of travelling virtually the same route, though a bit further out into the Baltic, and back to Kiel, between 10.30 am to 1 pm, on an old paddle steamer and in the company of a magnificent buffet (I know, I've done it before), for 37.50 euros. That's certainly more than we'd have to spend on the Laboe trip, but would anybody be interested? We'd have to book soon because those trips are very popular. And would anybody be interested in a little city tour around Sunday lunchtime, including a visit up the Town Hall steeple? I'd have to find out whether that's possible on a Sunday. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Dec 06 - 02:32 AM |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Dec 06 - 02:34 AM Oops!! Hit the wrong button! I would be interested in the paddle steamer trip as long as there were enough others to make a decent sized party. I'd be interested in going up the town hall steeple even if no one else was. DC |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 11 Dec 06 - 02:37 AM Sounds excellent, Susanne. I'm up for the paddle steamer trip, or defaulting to the ferry plan if not enough takers, and the spire climb! Well done you. |
