Let's not for get the Democrats: Ted Kennedy, Wilbur Mills, Patrick Kennedy, Harold Hughes, Sam Rayburn, Russell Long, Louis Stokes, Dan Rostenkowski, Mendell Rivers, Richard Bolling....

Alcohol abuse affects both parties. No one holds a gun to someone head and forces them to drink; alcoholism is no excuse for bad conduct by anyone.

Rapaire, while your list is quite accurate, it is a bit dated. Those caught out in the glare of the headlights/spotlights--or even the light of day--right now are tilting very much to the right.

They have also had careers (recently, at least) that touts the virtues of being highly moralistic.

Hence the hypocrisy.

Lots of folks on your list were just plain, ole drunks. These scandals are about using the drink as an excuse for hypocrisy and double standards. As in one for me, another for everyone else.

But you missed the point of the thread, which is not about alcholism in Congress, but hypocrisy.

I'm not mocking alcoholics here. I'm pointing the barbs at the sanctimonious hypocrites using alcohol as an excuse to justify their bad behavior AFTER being caught out.

That's right. As I said, "alcoholism is no excuse for bad conduct by anyone."

Neither is being molested by a priest as a youth, using or having abused prescription drugs, or transporting Viagra under someone else's name.

Stupid choices lead to stupid actions wheich, in far too many, are first denied and then blamed on the stupid choice (and children can and do "tell" on adult molesters, both now and in the past).
