Subject: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: Geoff the Duck Date: 02 Nov 06 - 09:21 AM Just spotted on the digibox. Sullivan's travels. No idea what the film is like but seems to be recommended. The story is about a film maker who wants to make a film called "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?". Apparently the Coen Brothers who finally did make a film of that name were big fans of this one. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 02 Nov 06 - 05:00 PM If this is the 1941 film starring Joel McRea and Veronica Lake, don't miss it. In it's day it was considered a witty spoof on Hollywood movie making and I reckon it still stands up as a smart movie with witty dialogue and some clever slapstick - watch out for the scene where Veronica Lake nervously has to jump from a moving boxcar. It also has great character men like William Demarest, Eric Blore, and Franklin Pangborn. If it's not this, but a modern remake, well I don't know. But if it is the original..............Enjoy. Burl. |

Subject: RE: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Nov 06 - 07:03 PM It's a great film. There's one scene where the Coen Brothers did a direct crib from the earlier film, as a tribute. Preston Sturgess made some wonderful films. Mind, the music isn't as good as in "Oh Brother!" |

Subject: RE: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 Nov 06 - 10:22 AM Veronica Lake was really beautiful. She had long hair that flopped over one eye - the girl with the peekaboo hairstyle. Its a great film, and the end makes you cry. |

Subject: RE: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: Geoff the Duck Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:56 AM Watched the film and enjoyed it. It wasn't at all like the blurb suggested. Full of surprises. I've been busy, so haven't had a chance to look for the scene borrowed by the Coen brothers. Was it the one with convicts watching a film? It is due on again on the same digital channel (Film4) tomorrow - 7.20 Thursday 23 Nov 06. Quack GtD. |

Subject: RE: UK-Film4 Sat 4 Nov 06 Sullivan's Travels From: M.Ted Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:22 PM Anything else by Preston Sturges is worth seeing, as well. He wrote, directed, and produced his own films, which made him very unpopular in Hollywood--he had a certain knack for portraying things that no one else even dared to try to get away with--"The Miracle of Morgan's Creek", a screwball comedy about an unmarried woman who goes out one night, gets drunk, and comes home pregnant, being a case in point. |

It's amazing people aren't more aware of Preston Sturgess. |
