I know he lived a good life and lived a long time, but dammit, this one is just no good. Jack Palance died, today. I guess there is some good in that he died of natural causes, at home with his family around him. Obit. here.

Happy Trails, Curly and thanks!

Neat BIO. He spoke six languages, was a poet, and former boxer as well as distinguished military veteran of WWII. That bio has his born as name, also.

OH shit!

He was great.

My childhood was all about "ripleys believe it or not" and he had some cool film roles, but his real moment was his performance in BAGDAD CAFE

Reccommend it hightly to anyone. Jack palance is truly masterful in it. Such charm I never could have known he possessed, but more than that, deep and subtle humour of a type that I could only aspire to.

It also featues thet glorious and heavenly voice of Jevetta steele singing the theme song "calling you"

bio says: "Once fell asleep in his square during a taping of "The Hollywood Squares" (1966)."

Now there's a man I can relate to.

He was rather impressive doing one handed pushups at the oscars that time, but more impressive is what most people did not know about him, as mentioned above, he was well educated, a writer & painter.

It's a pity "The Horsemen" has been all but forgotten. A great movie. He and Omar Shariff were both brilliant in that.

For me, there were three real western movie villains in the world: Jack Palance, Jack Elam, and Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance. Marvin never came as close to being trapped in a type as the others. Fortunately for all of us, Elam and Palance also got to show how much more they had to offer. Is there anyone out there now who can hold a candle to 'em?

My brother and I always referred to him as Crazy Jack after his appearance in one of those 1950 religious epics in which he played a magician. He dies trying to fly - great scene.
RIP

I know this thread is about Jack Palance, but as long as 'my fovorite movie bad guys' has been introduced, I would like to add Richard Boone. He saved several John Wayne movies by being so hateful that you had to root for the Duke.

My mother had a story of watching him on a talk show one time that she loved to tell. I don't remember which program--Johnny Carson, perhaps--the first guest was some fellow whose wife had recently had a child. He and the host laughed about how he didn't have much to do right now, but when the child was older he could play with it.

Palance sat down and started telling the two of them about how fathers needed to be involved with their babies right from the very beginning, holding them, changing diapers, reading and singing to them, being there to imprint on them from the very beginning. Mom (a psychiatric social worker in child protective services) was so impressed that this big tough cowboy actor could sit down and on national TV wax nostalgic for raising his children in that way. What a great role model!

Sinsull-That movie you refer to is "The Silver Chalice". Chalice was also the screen debut of Paul Newman, and he HATED the movie. I, on the other had, loved the movie because the distaff lead, Virginia Mayo, was the object of this [then] fourteen year old's crush.
Palance played some wonderful non-villain roles: Manolete in the Playhouse 90 biopic of the famed matador; the broke down fighter in "Requiem for a Heavy Weight;" and the tormented actor in "The Big Knife."

Didn't Richard Boone play Paladin in "Have Gun Will Travel" - one of my favorite western series of all time.

A quote from a real man!

"Studio press agents make up anything they want to, and reporters go along with it. One flack created the legend that I had been blown up in an air crash during the war, and my face had to be put back together by way of plastic surgery. If it is a 'bionic face,' why didn't they do a better job of it?"

He was great!

RIP Jack!

I always remember him in an old black and white war movie set around the Battle of the Bulge called"Attack", it had some of the most authentic feeling battle scenes and the mens reactions to them as I have ever seen. RIP Jack, an actor I have admired since I was a very young man.

Rest, Jack. Say "Hello" to Alan Ladd.
With the fairly recent demise of another film master, Glenn Ford, there can't be many of the greats left on this Earth. Kirk Douglas, but hardly any other of the giants who made my younger days at the cinema so memorable.

There are still great actors from that era around, but they're the women in those great movies who you've forgotten about. Arlene Dahl, Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Wyman, Lauren Bacall, Ester Williams, Yvonne De Carlo, Sylvia Sims, Martha Hyer, Barbara Rush, Joan Fontaine (did you know she's still alive?) many others I can't call to mind right now. They were younger than the males they played opposite, so they're still around, elderly, but around. I had to take Katy Jurado off of my list--she died in 2002. But there are many of them out there--just so you know!

Here are some popular movie stars who are still with us. This is just from the Ws:

                               Jane Wyman:   92
                               Esther Williams:   83
                               Richard Widmark:    91
                               James Whitmore:    85
                               Eli Wallach:    90

I cant see too many of the current crop of actors replacing the greats from the 1930-40s. Brad Pitt? Daniel Baldwin? Johnny Depp?

On 11/11/2006 on our way home from Lauglin, Nevada all of a sudden we decided to get off highway 15 and take Route 66 so we stopped at a gas station to find out which way was going West on 66 and this scruffy looking red neck says is that way but you should go see the Bagdad Cafe ...its about a mile East om Rt 66 so I told him I remember the movie with Jack Palance. He did not say anything so we turned East on Rt 66 and stopped at the Bagdad Cafe. It was nice. When we got home about 10:00 at night we heard that Jack Palance passed away on 11/10/2006. I am going to buy the movie. Sorry about the "crack" about red necks..mean no harm.

Living near the area where Jack Palance was raised (Hazleton, PA) as I grew up (now 62 years old) I remember hearing people from our area speak of him many times when he visited. I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet him.

I was recently shopping in Hazleton, PA and spoke to someone who said that one time when Jack came to town, he made a visit to the local hardware store looking for parts for his tractor. Don't know of any other actor who would take time to fix a tractor.

RIP Jack. You will be greatly remembered by the people of northeast PA.

He did a lovely turn as Bartle in "Buffalo Girls" -- he plays the last of the mountain men, the whole thing is an elegy to the old west, and he is great in it, he gives life to what could be a "grizzly old mountain man" cliche.

yours,

Peter T.

Excuse the slight drift, but I read that Bruno Kirby who starred alongside Jack Palance in City Slickers passed away in August this year. He played the young Peter Clemenza in The Godfather Part ll.
