They gave us the word 'prehominid', and caused Darwin to happen, or not if Creationism is yer thing. They coined the expression, "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!" They provided someone to raise Lord Greystoke. Uh, that's all I can think of for now.

But they didn't invent the vending machine, television, fast food, bodice-ripper novels, or ANY of the things we take for granted and which make up today's civilization. They didn't have to worry about much of anything except an occassional sabertooth tiger or leftover dinosaur or something.

The way they poke their noses out of the sediments every few years, just to let a few more keen youngsters write PhDs, I think is terrific!
