From: Rapparee

Robert Altman, the caustic and irreverent satirist behind ``M-A-S-H,'' ``Nashville'' and ``The Player'' who made a career out of bucking Hollywood management and story conventions, died at a Los Angeles Hospital, his Sandcastle 5 Productions Company said Tuesday. He was 81.

The director died Monday night, Joshua Astrachan, a producer at Altman's Sandcastle 5 Productions in New York City, told The Associated Press.

The cause of death wasn't disclosed.

Well, another one gone. "Kansas City" is a much ignored favourite of mine. RIP Mr. A.

They aren't making them like Altman anymore. He'll be missed. Hollywood needs more original thinkers like him.

This makes me very sad, Nashville was one of my favourtitest movies ever, and most of his stuff was quality if one draws a discreet veil over Popeye.

Altman's version of M*A*S*H forever changed the way I look at movies. He was brillant.

"A Prairie Home Companion". He hadn't lost his touch. Sorry to see him go.

Gosford Park and Prairie Home Companion indeed demonstrated mature mastery.

He had a remarkable run of movies in the '70s (MASH, Brewster McCloud, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, California Split, Nashville, 3 Women -- and a couple others I can't recall just now) that are still among my favorites. After enjoying PHC as much as I did, I was looking forward to what he was going to do next. . .

Sigh.

NPR had Garrison Keillor on, today, speaking of what it was like working with him on PHC...very sad, indeed. They also played cuts from some past interviews of Altman himself.

Hee is what Garrison Keiller had to say on the Prairie Home Companion Site:

Mr. Altman loved making movies. He loved the chaos of shooting and the sociability of the crew and actors — he adored actors — and he loved the editing room and he especially loved sitting in a screening room and watching the thing over and over with other people. He didn't care for the money end of things, he didn't mind doing publicity, but when he was working he was in heaven.

That's the opening paragraph. Click on this to read the rest.
