The debt will still be there and I'd suggest that if you only owe $3K that you'd be better off retirin' it over time 'cause you never know when yer going to need credit no matter where you are and bad credit is bad credit...

Plus, you borrowed it so pay it back... It's the correct thing to do...

Flippin' right, man! Lissen, I am Canadian, eh?   And I got debts no man can pay. I am indebt up to my flippin' eyeballs and it's been that way ever since I got outta school...which was, like, Grade 10, eh? (I am surprised I flippin' staid THAT long...)

Anyways, if ya add up all the smokes, booze, and dope that I have bummed, borrowed, and outright stole from my friends...plus the flippin' student loan I applied for but then I never flippin' WENT! Har! Har! Spent it all on booze, dope, and smokes, eh?

Then ya count in the unpaid traffic fines and the stuff I have...ummm...borrowed over the years...and, like, forgot to return..like about 35 snowmobiles, 10 or 15 cars and trucks, amps, guitars, stereos, TV's, one mobile home, a coupla coin collectshuns, a solid brass Elvis stature, a anteek vaise that got broke, a few leather jackets....

And then there is all the rent I never paid. Holy flip! I figger it amounts to at last maybe 300-flippin'-thousand bucks by now, eh?

I ain't never paid any of it and I got off scot-flippin'-free! That's Canada, man. A free ride.

But what ya gotta do, man, if you wanna be realllly safe...is this. Move to Blind River, ONtario. That's right, man! Blind River. Best flippin' town with the dummest cops in Canada. I flippin' kid you not! The cops here are so stupid that they don't flippin' know what is goin' on right in front of their flippin' noses, and that is cos they all drink like flip on the sly but they still don't drink enuff to get smart. Like me. I am flippin' brilliant, eh? And I'm popular too. I got the girls lined up around the block, man.

If you move to Blind River I will teach you everything I know and I will not charge much, eh? Just free smokes, dope, and booze fer a coupla months, eh? It will take at least 2 months to teach you most of what I know...

So do it. Move to Blind River and all yer debts will be erased fer life, dude. No word of a lie, eh? You can trust me.

- Shane

That's a bit naive. Credit companies from the US and Canada not only communicate, they are the same companies, or at least owned by a common lord & master.

Ethical issues aside, I question whether the credit companies would know that John Smith living at 1234 Oak Street in Vancouver, BC is the same John Smith that once lived at 4321 Elm Street in Portland, OR unless John Smith was compelled to divulge his US Social Security number to Canadian authorities. All US credit histories are keyed to SS numbers, not names. There are just too many people with the same name floating around. When the Canadians assign you their equivalent of a Social Security number, if they don't correlate it to your old US number you have, for all intents and purposes, become a new person. If they do correlate the two numbers, you'll have Canadian bill collectors knocking on your door before you know it.

Debt is not necessarily something one has borrowed; it can be medical bills and other things as well.

A relative of mine works for a collection agency in the States. She says they do use Experian or Equifax up there, she couldn't remember which, but she also said if you have, for instance, five files here, they may only know about two or three up there. You do have to have some kind of ID no matter where you go. She also said they quite often will not bother to make collection calls to Canada. Of course, Your Mileage May Vary.:-)

Don't pay your debt, assume they won't put two and two together. For a while. But don't bother coming back to the U.S., because depending on the nature of the debt, you could find some nasty paperwork or charges laid while you're away.

If I were that one who you're planning to marry, I'd personally be happier to have you arrive debt free and poor rather than in debt and planning to spend more money you don't have.

Enough said.

If you owe the money for any reason, it is borrowed. Weather it is for medical bills is not an issue. Either you pay the bills or you owe them.

Texas has a homestead law, so that your home (after you'ved lived in it long enough to spend a January 1 in it then you can file) is not up for grabs in bankruptcy. And there is a rule that "one of each thing" is left with you, so if you have duplicate vehicles, maybe other big ticket items, they can seize all of the extras toward your debt. But Florida has it even stronger. That's why O.J. beat a path for the place, as to many deadbeats. They buy McMansions and sit on their cash there in their houses, out of reach of debt collectors.

jimmyt, you are correct. Sorry, I did not mean to imply that medical bills are not a debt. They are, but not, in the strictest sense, a "loan" as in one goes to a bank or credit card etc.

Subject: RE: BS: will my debt erase if i move to canada?

Actually, Kat, medical bills are a loan in any sense of that word. Some entity has provided goods and services for which they expect [deferred] payment. If this loan is for an elective procedure, it is the same as buying, say, a car. However if the loan be for an emergency procedure or a life threatening illness, every effort should be made to pay it off if possible. Sometimes it's not possible, but that is different from just trying to beat the bill.

Although it may be more difficult to collect a US debt in Canada, if you skip on the US bills, they will bounce right back when you try to get a loan in Canada, since you have no other credit. Much better to pay the bill off, and start off up north with a clean slate.

I agree as to the paying off, JohnontheSunsetCoast, but it is not like going to a bank, meeting with a loan officer and consolidating one's debts or buying a house, etc. Yes, one does sign a paper at hospital, agreeing to all kinds of things, including being responsible for charges, but I still think of it as something other than a "loan." When one buys a house or car, they are assured of having said product for their use etc. If one has to have emergency surgery with an iffy chance of survival, they may not even be around to pay for the bill. I don't think it is worth parsing over, but that's the way I see it.

do credit companies from the US and canada communicate?

As noted, they are the same companies. Further, all account data entry for all these companies is done in the same town in India (via satellite connection). (From a Technology Review study about a year ago.)

If you have credit card debt, you should be aware that a change in US Federal Bankruptcy regulations around a year ago exempted Credit Card Debt from bankruptcy relief. In addition, a change in your "credit status" is sufficient "cause" for them to raise the rates on any account to a "risk level" interest rate which currently is running at around 39% per year (with a few higher). They can also assess a "penalty" charge for any payment on which you are late, or fail to make the payment.

Since you cannot make a payment until you receive your monthly statement1, they can prevent you from making payments on time by "mysteriously" delaying delivery of the statement to you, and after (usually) three late payments - on that account or on any other accounts you have - they can raise the interest rate. Each payment that they force you to make late will also incur the ($50 typical) "late payment fee."2

1 The clerks in India "have to have the statement" to properly credit the payment. You can't even "pay in advance" if you plan to be on vacation, since the "advance payment" will all be "posted" to the last statement the clerks have, and the "missed payment" will be assessed penalties.

2 I have experienced a credit card that deliberately delayed statements in an attempt to raise my rate. They're no longer my problem, but I must note that it was AT&Ts Master Card - not a fringe outfit.

In testimony to Congress prior to the "new Credit Card exemption" from bankruptcy, the credit card companies admitted that nearly half their "net" already came from "penalties and fees."

The only "safe" way I've found to use a credit card in the US is to set up your bank account to make the payments automatically, since that way you have a "third party" witness to late billings. Just make sure you keep enough balance in the account to cover the monthlies.

If possible, just pay off the debt; but some accounts impose "payoff penalties" so check the terms of your own account(s).

Debts other than credit cards likely will eventually be turned over (sold) to collection agencies. Collection and other "investigative" agencies are subject to some restrictions on what they can do to track you down, but there are few penalties and the restrictions are so commonly ignored that many police agencies (including the NSA and FBI) commonly "buy results" from them, since they are free to use the illegal methods - as long as the purchasers of the information "don't ask."

They'll find you if they look very hard. If they have to look, it will cost you a lot. Whether they'll look very hard for $3,000 might be debatable, but ...

John

Was there any kind of rationale suggested for this change, or have things reached the state where the ruthless use of power by the rich does not have to masked anymore?

You can skip out on your debt but you have to hide in a remote area for 10 years or you can file bankruptcy in Canada and have no credit for five years or you can just pay it off a little at a time. If you only have 3k of debt and you're young, pay it off. If not, file bankruptcy. Hiding in a remote area might be the best idea. At least then you'd learn how to take care of yourself.

Assuming it is possible to move - to Canada or elsewhere - and have a new identity with no record of your past debt, it is usually much more difficult to get credit under reasonable terms with no credit record than with a moderately soiled past record.

Even if your past debts go away, your current/immediate expenses must be considered strategically.

the statute of limitations on a debt in Canada is 6years.
the exception is taxes owed to Govt.
(I know since Ive had to sue a number of times to get paid for jobs done).

this doesnt mean that your credit rating wont be affected, if you have uncollected debts.

Can you explain this? I'm sure you don't mean that if the bank lends me a few g's, I'm home-free if I can avoid paying up for 6 years ... !
