Subject: Searching for an old country song
From: l.g@ns.Sympatico.ca

I have been looking forever for an old country song that I friend used to sing for me many years ago. I know only the first line. "Deep in the heart of my Tennesse home. The song is from the 40's or 50's I think. If I could get the lyrics it would mean a lot to me.

Lloyd

TRAGIC ROMANCE
As recorded by: Cowboy Copas
Writer: Louis Marshall [aka Grandpa] Jones

[G] Nestled in the heart of the [C] Tennessee hills
[D] Mid peaceful pines, midst the rocks and the [G] rills;

There stands my old homestead of long, long ago
It brings back fond memories of one I loved so;

I courted a maiden so sweet and so fair
With heavenly eyes and of chestnut brown hair;

She told me she loved me and said she'd be mine
But I went away leavin' her there behind;

I'll tell you the reason why I left her there
To roam this old world with its' sorrow and care;

I saw her one night in the arms of a man
Huggin' and kissin' like true lovers can;

I went to my home with a heart full of woe
I packed my belongin's determined to go;

For many long years this old world I did roam
With thoughts of my darlin', my sweetheart, my home;

While dining one day in a little country town
A stranger walked in and he chanced to sit down;

While talkin' of loved ones I happen'd to find
That his sister was that old sweetheart of mine;

When he heard my story, to me he then said
The one that you loved has a long time been dead;

Now I am the man whom you saw that fatal night
Wrapped in the arms of my sister, so tight;

She loved you so dearly but you broke her heart
Oh, stranger from her evermore you must part.

There is considerable doubt and confusion regarding the authorship of this song.

Vernon Dalhart recorded a version of it in 1924, when 'Grandpa' would have been about 11 or 12 years old.

The song is usually creditted to the Morris brothers, Zeke and Wiley, who recorded it the 1940's. The Greenbriar Boys' recording, with Dian James (Elektra EKL-233) credits it to the Morrises.
