Maybe this isn't as warm and fuzzy as the present you're giving your sweetie, but this DVD does look interesting. It's about the 1929 Lawson family murders. Here's what the blurb says on the Website:

This story goes behind closed doors in a rural southern community. The film traces the events which lead up to the tragedy and the immediate aftermath and how the community is dealing with this today.
Including 75 hours of footage and over 6,000 photographs.

A local radio station interviewed these guys the other day. They were talking about how not enough has changed in how we deal with (or don't) and talk about (or don't) domestic violence.

If I heard right, they are donating a chunk of money to a shelter that will allow women to escape bad situations without completely ripping themselves and children from what support they do have (e.g. school routines, etc). The statistics on available shelter and resources were very discouraging.

They had 2 sell out crowds on one day at a theatre in Mt. Airy and have shown at 4 other locations since then and the crowds keep going. I would recommend this DVD of it to anyone anywhere. It is a true story and a story that needs to be told in film so that people can get a better feel for what domestic violence can do if gone un-checked.

   The 75 hours mentioned for the documentary was a typograhical error. It's actually only 75 minutes. Hope this helps.

I liked it, and the film has gotten some good reviews, like on www.crimeblog.us

"The filmmakers' approach was pitch-perfect in how they incorporated those local voices in their work. They went into peoples' living rooms, into their kitchens. They taped their subjects in natural light and let them ramble. I watched these scenes in particular and I could almost smell the percolated coffee in the kitchen, hear the soft ticking of a ceiling fan. I could hear voices and accents familiar to me. I was taken back to my own relatives' kitchens and living rooms, to sitting on the long front porch at my grandparents' farmhouse in Spring Hill, Tennessee as a summer storm was moving in, listening to my grandpa and my dad talk of similar events, tell dark stories from my own community's past."
