Anyroads, have a great time and a safe entry into the new year!

Wish I could join you...

Hmmm, My brother was making me jealous by talking about his quiet christmas with just his wife and daughters, then let slip that 11 roosters were meeting their demise and getting plucked that day. If I'd only known I'd have saved one out special for Kendall.

Have a blast!! I'll expect a report from Charmion and Edmund tomorrow, although they should watch the weather, sounds like mixed precip early, should be ok later though.

Thanks for the explanation of 'two bits'--I didn't know that. BTW our next TruBrit Newsletter is going to be about old English money so there'll be some explanations of the 'bobs, half crowns, tanners etc.....'

Jeri - I know what you mean about time differences and their challenges. In another life when I worked for corporate America, I managed a group of people who supported the sales office in Hawaii. There seemed to be a window of about 10 seconds a day when we could actually communicate with them......

Have a wonderful party at Mary's.......

Won't make it this time   Got in at 3 a.m. (thanks to Delta, and having slept in about 6 different beds in 10 days (alas, not as much fun as it sounds)with WAY too many Reids (lots of fun, but exhausting.) I'm curling up with the cat. May sneak out and see the Woodchucks though.

I did come home to find Edmund and Charmion pretty comfortably ensconced with the cat on the futon (although somewhat concerned about my whereabouts) and have sent them on their way after a lovely breakfast.

I'll be thinking of you all tonight. (I think there'll be a song challenge soon re. the "Delta Blues" )

Humph. These chickens are bantams (half size chickens) and mostly free-range; hardly worth the effort to pluck, there would be so little meat. Having said that, anyone who takes the extra 4 really handsome roosters is the new owner and free to make that decision. I call dibs on the best feathers!

The alpha rooster Airlie and the heir apparent Calico will remain here, along with Lil' Bit the mille fleur dowager queen, her two daughters Spice and Hawk, and three young granddaughters, who provide eggs and garden insect control.

By the bye: Truly free-range chickens can be quite tough due to superior muscle development. We haven't tried any of ours for meat. Zucchini might find its way into Kendall's and Jacqui's house without warning. :)

Remember, Kendall thinks I'm timid. Don't frighten me off. ;)

Pieces o' eight from the Spanish dollars was my best guess above. But I didn't know anyone referred to the "pieces" as "bits."

"Quarters, oh, quarters!" those saucy pirates cried,
But the quarters that we gave 'em was to sink them in the tide..."

Charley Noble

Subject: RE: New Year's Eve Song Circle at SINSULL's

Two Bits: (from answers.com)
United States

"... a holdover from colonial America, when Spanish dollars ... were deemed equivalent in value to a U.S. dollar. To provide smaller denominations, they were cut into eighths, or "bits". Thus, twenty-five cents was dubbed "two bits," as it was a quarter of a Spanish dollar. Correspondingly, the terms "four bits" and "six bits" referred to fifty and seventy-five cents, respectively.

Because there was no one-bit coin, a dime (10 ¢) was sometimes called a short bit and 15c a long bit. For example, "Six-Bits Blues" by Langston Hughes included the following couplet: Gimme six bits' worth o'ticket/On a train that runs somewhere…."

By the way, Kendall, it's cold and slippery and snowing steadily here. The chickens refuse to have anything to do with their chickensitter, Mrs. W. Coyote, or her good friends young Ms Weasel and Mr. Jeremy Fisher. And they thought they'd enjoy the ride to S. Portland, but when I read them the post about chicken recipes, that was the end of that! So we'll be staying here for New Year's.

However, if we drive down during August, fellow mudcatters in attendance might return to their cars the next morning to find 'em filled with zucchinis and our extra roosters. Be afraid. Be very afraid...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Yours truly,

meek maeve

On a better note, the whale tambourine turned up in a piole of blow up costumes.

Well, here in Oz, we are actually 16 hours ahead of Mudcat time, which means that midnight here will be 8am Mudcat on THE DAY BEFORE - the 31st. I'd ring somebody at 8am on the 31st if I knew any phone numbers - probably just as well I don't ;-)

On the other hand if anyone from the US were to ring me at midnight their time, I would have moved on to 4pm the next day, and there's an outside chance I might be up by then - well I do like to party!

We're 11 hours ahead of the UK, so our midnight will be their 1pm on the 31st, and their midnight will be our 11am on the 1st. Good chance I'll still be in bed then.

Actually we're going out to a friends' place and we're going to get a tram in to somewhere near the city where we can see the fireworks. I was looking at a preview last night where they were trying out some of the lighting they always do on the Harbour Bridge. It's affectionately known as "the coathanger", and I saw a lit-up coathanger on the side of it. They've forecast rain but we won't let a little bit of that slow us down.

Wish I could be a fly on the wall at your party, Mary! So - DID you let the snowman in?

TRU-B, MMario is only right about the time difference if we're being serious. Since it would be rude to call Micca at 5 AM, and Mary is not rude, so it's not 5 AM. I'm actually quite good at time zones. I once tried to make a work-related phone call to Hawaii from Korea on a Monday. They're an hour behind... not really. Hawaii is actually 25 hours behind S. Korea, and no one's there to answer the phone on Sunday. And then there's the complicated task of asking an Air Force pilot what time it is. Preliminary answer: "Do you want Eastern Standard, local or Zulu (GMT)?"

...but I digress.

Maybe you could mess with your clocks, convince your guests it's later than they think, and when they go to bed, sneak over to Mary's?

Well - I was regretting missing the party before I read this thread.....now I KNOW I should be there.........but probably not unless for an hour at the end after dinner.

Jeri, MMmario is right -- UK is five hours AHEAD. MMario - good thing someone gets the time difference between here and the UK ..... it is a bit shocking to hear the phone ring at some wierd time (= in my imagination, SOMEBODY DIED OR WHY ARE YOU CALLING SO LATE.....!!!!!!!????)...

I have never understood how two bits could be a quarter -- two bits of what I ask myself? This country can be very complicated!

Mary - did you let the snowman in?

Everyone make a mental note not to sit too near to Mr. Finn when he is singing shanties or if so, vet the choice of song very very carefully ...............'next to and below him??' - the mind boggles.

Happy New Year everyone from TRUBRIT who is still officially on holiday until January 2 (British visitors still here til the first) but missing the mudcat so stole a minute to check in ...... think of what I might have missed if I hadn't done so!!!!!!!
