Subject: BS: To clear a hero's name From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 02 Jan 07 - 08:59 AM Tex Banwell was a remarkable and brave WW2 veteran now sadly dead. Here is his New York Times obituary. http://www.mishalov.com/Banwell.html His name was brought up in a thread, starting here. thread.cfm?threadid=92760&messages=308#1791379 He was insulted and accused of committing offences in Northern Ireland. The person responsible later posted a full retraction and apology. Many people missed this, so this thread is just to clear his good name publicly. |
Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 02 Jan 07 - 09:02 AM Those who were following the original thread might like to see what was my final contribution, just before the whole thing was deleted. We have both apologised. I have had my nose rubbed in it even though mine was for a far lesser sin. My sin was just that I did not spot his apology. An apology posted nearly 2 weeks after the event, in a thread completely unrelated to the original discussions, and immediately buried under eleven guest posts about an obscure loyalist website. Only Big mick seemes to have seen it, and he presumably had forgotten it when this appeared. His was for insulting a remarkable and brave man, stating as facts that he had committed offences that he was entirely innocent of, and dismissing me with sarcasm and contempt when I tried to correct him. All I wanted to do was to give the clearing of his name as great an airing as his defamation had been given, and I did it without mentioning anyone else's name. Good man that Divis is, I am sure he would have no objection to that. |

Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: JennyO Date: 02 Jan 07 - 09:08 AM Yep - it's deja vu all over again. You know this thread won't last long, don't you Keith? I'm sure plenty of people saw the original one and the fact that both had apologised seemed like a fitting conclusion to me. What good will it do, starting the whole thing over again? |
Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 02 Jan 07 - 09:11 AM Because it is all gone Jenny. His name uncleared but for that obscure post. |
Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: JennyO Date: 02 Jan 07 - 09:16 AM I think it was cleared in the minds of the people who read it, Keith. Anyway, didn't you ask for it to be deleted? |

Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: GUEST,Alan Date: 02 Jan 07 - 09:59 AM Keith I must agree with Jenny. I think your friend was a remarkable man. I have read all the related material about him. I don't think bringing this all up again serves any purpose. I also don't think trivialising someone's apology by saying it was "buried" helps either. It appears in fact to demean the apology. An apology should always be accepted in the manner it was given. Having read all of this I would prefer to have seen you saying starting your other thread was a mistake on your part and dropping this subject and admitting we can all be wrong on occasions. I wasn't aware of this man until now and find his life extremely interesting. Alan |

Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 02 Jan 07 - 10:16 AM Not meant to be demeaning Alan, just to explain why it was so easily missed, and why I wanted to see it out in the open. I am done with this now. |

Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Jan 07 - 11:32 AM I also figured this thread must be about Clinton Hammond when I saw the title. He's a very misunderstood man. He's really just the sweetest guy when you get to know him up close and personal. |
Subject: RE: BS: To clear a hero's name From: GUEST Date: 02 Jan 07 - 11:37 AM Many people missed this, so this thread is just to clear his good name publicly. Who's good name ? |
