I was expecting quite a bunch of mail today
since new year's was a holiday. Anyone else
not get mail? I have checked the post box 3
times. Is this a holiday? Maybe because of
Gerald Ford's funeral? whassup?

Same here, of course. But I got lucky- I telephoned the postal contract station a few blocks from my home and they were open; the mail wouldn't go out until tomorrow but they were accepting outgoing stuff. I had some packages and other things I wanted to have go out asap so I got that done. Feel good about it.

It's always a holiday in Scotland. This may have something to do with the effects of Hogmanay and Uisge Beatha.

Since when did we get a national holiday unpon the death of a past president? I don't remember any. I also didn't notice the banks being closed. Were they?

There is a law in Canada were banks cannot be closed for a specific consecutive number of days .... must be the same in the U.S.

Yip Kat, the Banks and Stock Exchange were closed too yesterday.
Today , however, the Mail is back..curse,
Surprise, I received my parcel to my Secret Santee back to me...reason.... I did not list all contents on the customs form.....eh...I have checked the contents and what I wrote and eh actually I have listed everything in said parcel!
So now that the Post Office is open...I will go down and RESEND a Gift which was posted in time for Christmas. Hope they all enjoyed there day off cause it's all downhill for the local Post Office when I get there this morning....***Manic Grin***

Not all banks were closed yesterday, but many were. I remember them doing the same thing when Ronnie died. Before that, I don't recall the death of any other former president....other than Nixon and I don't think they'd do a whole lot to memorialize him...
I have a very close friend who works for the federal gov't. and they were given the day off in both cases.

They did, actually, close all the post offices for Nixon's funeral. I remember that distinctly because April 22, 1994 was the day, and I had taken that day off off of work specifically to stamp and send out my wedding invitations.

Boy, you should have heard me cursing when I got to the post office to find I couldn't buy stamps because they were closed in "honor" of Nixon -- 32 years after, as an unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate in 1962, he'd promised us Californians we wouldn't "have Nixon to kick around anymore."

My blood still boils.

That's nice... When the Queen Mother karked it a couple of years ago, government workers didn't get so much as an hour off to watch the funeral...

But we did have a spectacular view of the fly past for her 100th birthday celebrations in 2000... the smaller planes use our building as the visual pivot as they bank around to join formation over the Mall.
