Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Help Req: Old Radio Show From: GUEST,beachcomber Date: 05 Jan 07 - 02:58 PM Dunno if this will be any help but, for what it is worth , When I was in New York some years ago I went to "Sam Goody's" to browse through records and tapes. I found a selection of Old Radio Shows on Cassette. I bought several, featuring Burl Ives, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Cisco Huston and "Lefty Lou" from old Missou. (who she ??) among others. There seemed to be a very varied stock but, does Sam Goody still trade I wonder?? |
Subject: RE: Help Req: Old Radio Show-Squeakin' Deacon From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 07 - 03:02 PM Sam Goody went out of business, I believe, bought out by a firm called FYE or something like that. Subject: RE: Help Req: Old Radio Show-Squeakin' Deacon From: GUEST Date: 27 Mar 11 - 08:19 PM When I was 5 years old I was brought each weekend by my dad to a small bldg in Los Angeles where he emceed the Squeakin' Deacon radio show. It was a live broadcast either on Sat or Sun.and featured live country acts. My memory tells me that it was a VFW hall but I could be wrong. I believe Squeakin' Deacon came out of Bakersfield, CA and was very involved with the Backersfield C & W musice, ie, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, etc. I wish I had some of those radio broadcast of my dad opening, performing, then closing the radio show. Just minutes before the close of each show he would give me and my older brother the keys to the car. We would go out, turn on the radio and listen to him close the show singing Tumbling Tumbleweeds. |

Subject: RE: Help Req: Old Radio Show-Squeakin' Deacon From: GUEST,PJ Date: 29 Apr 11 - 10:00 PM My mom talks about Squeakin Deacon. He had a radio show Sunday mornings at a place called "The Riverside Rancho". It was a country nightclub and on Sunday mornings they had amateur acts. It was described as "across from the squirtin fountain" (that would be Riverside Drive and Los Feliz). |

Subject: RE: Help Req: Old Radio Show-Squeakin' Deacon From: GUEST,Bob Wagstaff Date: 02 Mar 18 - 06:41 PM Hi Tootie, So nice to hear from you. I am sorry to hear about your dad. I lost mine and 1973. Happy to know your mom is still going at 101 yrs. My memories are being at your dad's show are a bit hazy now but I recall enjoying the music so much. As I think I said before, when my dad would close the show he would sing tumblin tumbleweeds. Minutes before the closing of the show he would hand me and my brother the keys to the car and we would run out and turn on the radio and hear him sing the song. I don't think he did it every Sunday but I recall going there quite a few times. We were friends with Joanie and the Frontiersman who played there often as well. Wonderful memories. |
