I think it is either deliberately rude or accidentally inconsiderate to post an obscure or very regional expression like this without the courtesy of a definition. Does it make you seem to smart to have some "inside knowledge" of something that interests no-one outside your immediate circle? I don't like carping (well, actually, I do kind of enjoy it) but what the hey?

"Mianus is one of many neighborhoods located within the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut.

The community is located in a river valley formed by the Mianus River. It is home to North Mianus School, an elementary school. The Mianus River is dammed at East Putnam Avenue. The dam separates the tidal salt water estuary from the fresh water river. The area above the dam is called Mianus Pond.

The area and the river are named after the chief of the Siwanoy Tribe of Native Americans that inhabited the area when Europeans first encountered them. The Siwanoys sold areas of what is now called "Old Greenwich" to the first English settlers of the town for "40 English Coates" in 1640.

Mianus was featured in a segment of the MTV show Jackass in which Johnny Knoxville made fun of the town's name by pronouncing it "my anus", for example "Do you sell a lot of chocolate milk in my anus?" and "Are there a lot of famous people in my anus?" The segment culminated by visiting the sewage treatment facility of Mianus."

Mianus is pronounced "my-ANN-us." It is the name of a river that flows from the town of Bedford in Westchester County, New York through Greenwich and Stamford, Connecticut into Long Island Sound. Its main claim to fame occurred in the early morning of June 28, 1983, when a section of the bridge carrying the Connecticut Turnpike (Interstate 95) collapsed into the river 70 feet below, taking several lives with it. That made the national news. The turnpike was closed for several months while the bridge was being replaced.

The small section of Greenwich known as Mianus, on the Stamford border, is not a political subdivision, just a neighborhood. The residents there are fairly affluent, but not super-rich. Mianus was for several years home to my Morris team, Mianus River Morris, a mixed-sex team that practiced at the North Mianus Community Center, directly across the street from Mianus pond, mentioned in Amos's post above. During our 28-year existence, we performed quite a few times at the NEFFA and NOMAD festivals and also at various places around Westchester and Fairfield Counties. We went dormant about a year and a half ago.
