I spent most of the week in the other little room. we played music and everyone who came in joined in. no one ran it it just happened and was all the more enjoyable for that.

I dunno what people mean by the front bar. I am not a regular attendee at the T&S. The times when I have attended at festival times I quite agree that it is very full and not everyone can get on. No gripe there at all.

In June however, on a Sunday night, when there were no more than 10 singers sat around tables with 'Musicians only' labels on I waited all night to be asked and was not. I don't think it was 'cliquey' or elitist. Just damn poor organisation. When, eventualy, the organiser came from behind the 'reserved' tables, which I percieved as a barrier whether they were or not, I managed to collar him and he was very apologetic.

I am more than happy to give them the benefit of the doubt and will try again when I am next in Whitby on a Sunday night. Hopefuly they will have learned that not everyone will jump up and down demanding attention and the quite ones stood in a corner may just need asking.

If that is whinging, griping or going on and on, Mike of Northumbria and Mrs Duck, then I think I will apologise and instantly book on an English language course...

Previous 'Guest' appearances about being passed by last June were by me. I had, as I said, given up my Mudcat membership but the old place seems to be much happier now so I have decided to rejoin:-)

Hi Dave,

It seems that an apology from me is in order. Just for the record, my previous posting was concerned specifically with the singing which goes on in the T&S front bar every year during Folk Week at the end of August. It was aimed at several people who have been bad-mouthing this particular gathering for some time on Mudcat, on grounds that they believe are legitimate, but which I don't. Unfortunately, I mistook you for one of them

Clearly what you experienced on that Sunday night in June (and in a different part of the pub, too) has no direct relevance to this debate. The person in charge on the night you were there was obviously not doing his job properly. But then, we're all fallible, and he did apologise afterwards. So do I.

Wassail!

I was made welcome in the family room of the Tap and Spile when I first wandered in there in folk week about 6 years ago, and I met lots of new friends. But the room is too small for all the people who would like to get into the singaround. And the rest of the pub is generally heaving in folk week anyway, especially (as Nutty pointed out earlier) now that no music is allowed in the Plough.

The front bar has been the non-smoking bar, so it's going to be interesting to see whether singers and musicians relocate to other parts of the pub next August after the smoking ban comes into effect. (They probably won't because they'll be keeping up the traditions.)

It's always seemed friendly enough, and I've had no problem getting a song in, when I've dropped in. Well, squeezed in actually - it is rather overcrowded. That's what happens when a place gets popular - and I imagine that with the Plough of Despond out of bounds now it must have become even more overcrowded in Folk Week.

I prefer the kind of singing session where the singers are all over the room, with a skilled person juggling the spots, rather than the mechanical round-the-room way, which can get a bit mechanical. It's a lot harder to do, and it can go wrong, but when it works it can make for a livelier session. Maybe that's one reason it gets so crowded.

Hello you ALL,
The open folk session on a sunday night is run by my father [Derek Elliott]. He does not run any other session at the t&s.folk week,News Years or any other time. All these times were ran by the landlord and others in the back room. Yes it is true the open folk session has moved into the back bar [on sundays] but the two sessions remain seperate. The "singers only" cards were placed by the landlords NOT my father. He has asked me to say that all are welcome to the sunday night session and all are very welcome to join in.Moving to the back room will hopefully stop any one from being missed. The sunday night session will remain in the back room each week.May we also like to thank colin and andrew for their support.Hope to see you all there sometime. smiling!!! we hope our dereks session will remain in the back room 52 weeks a year. melody xx

I can confirm the comments made by old salty Derek Elliott has always whilst I have visited his Sunday Night session made everyone welcome. The, at times embarrassing, reserved for Singer and Musicians signs were put in place by the previous licensee as was the reserved for the Captain and Crew of the Grand Turk.
I always found them embarrassing because I always tried to make sure that I was there well before the start of the session, as did Derrick. The consequence of arriving early was that the late arrival of others who hade there seats reserved had people standing up who wanted to sit down in a room with empty seats, Embarrassing! I have personally as has Derrick suggested when the need arose that especially the infirm used the seats whilst the singers and musicians Captain and Crew turned up.

The inevitable babble of noise from around the Bar I have always found to be challenges to over come and a source of personal satisfaction when and if this was achieved. The friendly comrade ship of people in the room many of them regulars contributes to the session and encourages the strangers, who may never ever have visited and Acoustic un amplified session to join in. My thanks to them whilst helping others and myself to achieve this making this a very special and entertaining session full of fun. As inevitably the sale of packets of Crisps went down the consumption of Beer went up and yes there was reluctance to leave and some moaning at the end of the evening when the bar closed. But the majority would always return wanting more of the same every week. Well-done Derek and his many supporters!

Called into the Tap and Spile (soon to be The Station Inn) on Saturday. Its all been redecorated and looks great (except for the blue in ladies loo - I'd have gone for eau de nile myself, Andy). I'm hearing very positive things regarding the future of folk in the pub so lets drink to that.

Well, now that steam trains are running all the way to Whitby again (sometimes) perhaps it's time for the pub to recognise the station over the road...?

PS Herga's Tim Brooks, who wrote "So far from home" and "The Devil and York Minster" also wrote a song about the railway, called "Steam again in Goathland".

I had the impression they had the intention of changing the non smoking room to the larger front room instead of the smaller one. Of course it won't be long before the whole building will be smoke free. Hoping to be in Whitby tomorrow but likely to be travelling back before the Sunday session. Will still try to get in for a pint sometime during the day though :0)

Door staff are becoming quite widespread in the town, sometimes as a requirement of the license, sometimes as self-preservation. I think this one must be the latter, as the presence seems to be only part-time.

If you saw the same chap I have seen there a few times he looks pretty fearsome, but is perfectly civilised.

BTW, I've a hunch they don't like the term bouncer these days, too clear a description. Obfuscation rules, UK? 8-]

Strange. The one time I went to the Tap and Spile was purely by chance at the end of Sword Spectacular one year. There just happened to be a session on. They couldn't have made us more welcome and it will always go down in my memory as one of the nicest, friendliest pubs in the world, with great music and great beer.

Cheers,
