Subject: BS: Wow Florida navels From: GUEST,Don Last Date: 30 Jan 07 - 09:02 AM I got a case of Florida navel oranges last week and they are superior to any California navel orange I have ever eaten. They may not be as cosmetically pleasing on the outside (just like LA phonies with heavy madke up and botox) but they put california oranges into a catagory of "orange like" produce. I guess I was learly of florida oranges because their juice oranges are kind of nasty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: GUEST,Don Last Date: 30 Jan 07 - 09:06 AM Pray that that Florida does not drop below 28 degrees tonight on the heels of the great California freeze that killed off 80% of citrus. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: Wesley S Date: 30 Jan 07 - 09:11 AM I can almost smell the smudgepots burning now - I grew up across the street from a huge grapefruit orchard on the west coast of Florida. Let's hope the Florida citrus crop isn't lost too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 30 Jan 07 - 12:28 PM As a Floridian, I would never say anything negative about Florida citrus, but one thing you need to understand is that "shipped fresh" citrus is the absolute cream of the crop. The crate Don received shouldn't be taken as representative of all Florida navel oranges. In grocery store produce bins, the quality of Florida navels is just as hit-or-miss as that of their California cousins. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: GUEST,florida resident Date: 30 Jan 07 - 12:40 PM I like blood oranges and clemntines way better than navels. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jan 07 - 01:11 PM I really hate this Floridian triumphalism that arises every time we have a freeze here in California. Florida oranges are good, and some are extraordinary. California oranges are good, and some are extraordinary. But California oranges are frozen this year. I suppose most of the oranges come from corporate growers nowadays, so it's hard to feel sorry for them. But the workers aren't corporate, and neither are the family farmers still trying to make a go of it. We've had some great clementines and mandarins from family farms in this area this year - they ripened before the freeze. Many of these farms are still owned by Japanese-American families who somehow managed to hold onto their property during World War II. Many other farms have been lost to subdivisions, unfortunately. The navels come mostly from Fresno and on south. Very few in Orange County any more - real estate is too expensive there. -Joe Offer, Placer County, California- just now, as I'm looking, the Google ads at the bottom of this page are about oranges. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: Wesley S Date: 30 Jan 07 - 01:29 PM Joe - Is "triumphalism" really a word? Even if it is I havn't seen any triumphalism here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jan 07 - 02:46 PM What Joe means to say is that California navels are no more appealing than Florida ones. In other words an orange is an orange is an orange. However, I say that the California ones peal better than the Florida ones. Should we take a vote? And I don't think navel jewelry makes them any more appealing. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Wow Florida navels From: GUEST,Don Last Date: 30 Jan 07 - 03:56 PM Indeed these shipped fresh oranges are cream of the crop. I kinda like the fact that that they don't have that perfect plastic look of California oranges. They are clearly a different "strain" than California navels I am used to. PS The jaw is better but I did lose another 25% of my left ear hearing, but this time on the deep end. |
