In Sunday's New York Times OP-ED page (02-04-07,) there was an article by Nicholas D. Kristof entitled "Under Bush's Pillow." It starts out by talking about a reader named Melissa, who explains Iraq policy to her 8-year-old son using Harry Potter characters: "Dick Cheney is Lord Voldemort, George W. Bush is Peter Pettigrew, Don Rumsfeld is/was Lucius Malfoy. Cornelius Fudge represents admin. supporters who deny anything is wrong, while Rita Skeeter is Fox News. The article then goes on to cite other examples that readers have submitted along literary lines. Ahab, anyone?
Anyone interested can submit their own literary take at nytimes.com/ontheground
I have to admit, I got quite a laugh when I first read it. BTW, I tested the link, and it doesn't work.
When posting links, the URL has to be in this format: http://nytimes.com/ontheground - you need the http:// or else Mudcat looks on it as an internal link within Mudcat. Thanks to SRS for finding the error.

Link is dead, but what a neat idea! And kudos to Melissa... I sure as hell wouldn't have thought to use Harry Potter characters like that. But it really works (Bush=Pettigrew, the image is just too rich).

So who's Harry? And Dumbledore?

I saw the article on Sunday and thought it was insulting to Voldemort.

The link had a mistake (http://www.mudcat.org/nytimes.com/ontheground should appear as http://www.nytimes.com/ontheground) but once you fix it and get there, then you also have to join, it isn't free. So I'll see if I can log on through my university, that subscribes to the paper's content, and see if I can read it. Public libraries are also probably going to have online access.

Good points one and all. I knew the link was bad once I posted it. I did wonder if the site was free. As for Harry? Wilson, the former ambassador whose wife was outed as an undercover CIA agent? She as Hermoine? It's hard to really pick the good guys out of all this mess. And very controversial in trying. I'll let you decide. It could be fun.
