On February 11, 1847, Thomas Alva Edison was born. He is one of my heros because he invented the phonograph. I have a friend who collects old Edison phonographs and last night we listened to music on those old tubes and early records. What fun. Bobad - thanks for that link. A lot of Canadian fiddlers for the Atlantic provines talk about J. Scott Skinner, and I finally got to here one of his recordings. Now I understand why he's so fondly remembered.

As a kid I had a childrens book with various stories and anecdotes, one of which was entitled "The Wizard of Menlow Park". It was a potted history of Edison. It fascinated me and I must have read it so many times I could recite the article from memory. I wondered how a man could invent so many things in his lifetime. My favourite one was the paper shirt that never required washing. It was multi layered,and as one layer got dirty,the wearer would just peel it away revealing a clean layer underneath. Probably terrible history, but I loved the movie, and Spencer Tracy will always be Thomas Alva Edison to me. HB TAE.

Like many 'good ideas' of that time, they were rather limited - that may make the OUTSIDE of the shirt look clean, but what about the INSIDE?!!!!!

The "Cement" mentioned above is a little inaccurate. He developed a type of cement that was nearly indestructable. The buildings around the labs in West Orange, NJ were constructed of this material. After the labs closed, a number of the surrounding buildings were slated to be demolished. A wrecking ball was brought in, and it actually bouned off of the buildings. They ended up using dynamite. There are some housing developments still standing in Northern New Jersey that were made of this same cement. The houses look nice enough, but it's nearly impossible to do any alterations. Even the interior walls are made of Edison cement, making it nearly impossible to hang picures on the walls or do any exterior renovations.
