Subject: BS: Thank-you, Maher Arar From: dianavan Date: 16 Feb 07 - 02:20 AM As mentioned in an earlier thread, Maher Arar was sent to Syria and tortured. Upon his return, he held the Canadian government accountable and is now suing the U.S. It takes a very brave person and someone who truly loves democracy to go through what he has gone through. People like this, deserve our support. In his own words: "It is important to highlight that the inquiry report does not point the finger at any one person or institution alone. It is also crucial to focus on demanding concrete changes rather than focusing on asking some officials to resign from their jobs. This is because accountability is not about seeking revenge; it is about making our institutions better and a model for the rest of the world. Accountability goes to the heart of our democracy. It is a fundamental pillar that distinguishes our society from police states." Maher Arar http://commonground.ca/iss/0702187/cg187_maher.shtml |
