Subject: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: Wolfgang Date: 23 Feb 07 - 06:13 AM One of our most conservative politicians, Bavarian prime minister Stoiber, is known for his slips of the tongue. His most recent slip two days ago in a live speech was this: "I appreciate that the German chancellor has criticised Guantanamo in a talk with the American President Breshnev." What do we learn from that? (1) Even for the most conservative German politicians Guantanamo is not acceptable. (2) A country that accepts Guantanamo could just as well be governed by someone like Breshnev. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: The Shambles Date: 23 Feb 07 - 06:47 AM Even if we were not only too aware of this already - we learn little about the world view - but we do learn that pedants are always eager to make capital, create a fuss and point out the slightest error that others may make. Even and especially when these others are known for such 'gaffs' and they are hardly unexpected from that quarter. When such 'gaffs' are expected and few would be surprised - as in this case - it presents an opportunity for toleration and for us all to accept that as human beings we all make such cock-ups. Even the pedants among us. |

Subject: RE: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: Peace Date: 23 Feb 07 - 10:07 AM Sheeeeit. The correct spelling is 'gaffe'. A 'gaff' is what folks use to pull sharks, marlins and guppies into the boat. |

Subject: RE: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Feb 07 - 04:09 PM "President Breshnev" quite suits Bush, really. I suppose the Russians might be forgiven for feeling insulted, but Brezhnev did get his country involved in a foreign disastrous and brutal war which did more than anything to bring about the downfall of the Soviet Empire. Is it possible that this wasn't a slip of the tongue but a deliberate comment on the historical parallels between these two incompetent rulers? The regime in Guantanamo being another parallel with the similar excesses of the Soviet system. Here's a piece about some of the evidence about that which is coming out in a current case. The US psychological torture system is finally on trial : "America has deliberately driven hundreds, perhaps thousands, of prisoners insane. Now it is being held to account in a Miami court" |

Subject: RE: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: Peace Date: 23 Feb 07 - 04:19 PM My apologies, Ebbie. I think you would be a wonderful pedant, but I just don't envision you hanging from someone's neck. |

Subject: RE: BS: President Breshnev, close Guantanamo From: Ebbie Date: 23 Feb 07 - 10:32 PM Well, in Juneau we have lots of gaffs- this is a fishing town, after all- and I have promulgated my share of gaffes so I just don't know what to say. I do know that the prospect of hanging around someone's neck is no longer as enticing as it once was. :) |
