BS: Literary Agents

We're looking for the kind of literary agent who seeks to acquire trilogies - those novels which encompass several books [e.g. Dan Simmons, Sara Douglas]. Any writers out there who can recommend an agent or agency?

Actually, my experience with literary agents has been pretty dismal. The only thing I could suggest is that huge tome that Writer's Digest puts out every year and see which agents are listed under that kind of publication.

Working on finding one myself. The following site was recommended by the good folks at National Novel Writing Month. It is FREE and bills itself as the largest and most current database of agents. Here it is: Agent Query. I have been impressed with its ease of use and the updated info, plus its search function.

I would not recommend wasting money on the annual hardback of Writer's Market. It's much better, IMO, to pay an annual fee of $29.99 to use their online version at Writer's Market. The online version has a myriad of search parameters, a personal file where you can track your submissions, save listings in file folders, etc. MUCH easier to use than the book AND it updated throughout the year. IT si well worth imo.

Kat is right about the On-Line version, but if you live near a Barnes and Noble store, you can by the book for about the same money, and it has a code inside the front cover that lets you onto the Web-Site for no additional charge.

         In fact, the Web-Site has much better information on agents, it agents are all you need. The book has a bunch of other stuff that may or may not be useful to you.

What is the style and subject of the book? What living published author is closest in subject and style? Find out who that author's agent is and send a query and three chapters. Explain why your book is like that style, but how it is different enough to be unique.

Better to send query only, first. Most of them do not want to see more than that until they've read your query. That Agent Query site has some excellent examples of query letters that work.
