Tami, congratulations on your adoption of Bandit, and thank you for giving a home to an adult dog who needed one! Too many homeless dogs and cats stay homeless simply because they're not cute little puppies and kittens any longer.

For the record, I did not feed it to him, he scarfed it before I could get to it. As for dissing, is the truth dissing? He does have boot breath and he will eat anything that doesn't try to eat him first. Doesn't mean we love him any less.

If Mary's creamed onions tried to eat Seamus first, I understand why everybody's dissin' 'em!

We expect a report, you know, of what first contact is like and whether Bandit tries to eat your cat or do something else gossip-worthy.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, though...he has major boot breath and could use an Altoid from time to time. :-)

The only dog bite I ever incurred was delivered, believe it or not, by a St. Bernard. I was pushing my baby's stroller down a country road when this huge dog came barrelling out and bit me on the ankle. I grabbed my baby up and swinging the stroller round about and over arm I chased the dog back up her drive.

The next day I got worried about it being a breed that is not considered vicious, went back to the house and knocked on the door. Turned out that the bitch had new puppies and evidently became agitated at the noise of the stroller's wheels grinding on the gravel.

OK, this is my thread. Pit bulls get a bad rap and any breed of dog can and will bite under the wrong circumstances. End of that discussion.

Now, back to Bandit. Yes, Mary, he had better get used to the weather quick, otherwise he may be in for a bit of a shock.

I think the only time I was bitten it was by some little yappy thing - fortunately too small to do significant damage.

Of course, I should have been bitten when I jumped in to rescue my little dog from a usually mellow very large shepherd that had suddenly attacked him - no idea why I didn't get seriously hurt. Learned later that the shepherd had just returned from doing stud duty and therefore had an excess of dog testosterone, and he was fine the next day when we walked by (though my little guy was pretty nervous around him for quite a while).

I was bitten by several dogs as a child, one because she had puppies and was a little 'off', I think; one because it was a congenitally insane pooch that bit everybody, and one because it was an untrained herding dog. Only the insane one bit hard and drew blood. I was understandably wary of dogs for many years, but was converted to doggie adoration by an overwhelming number of good dogs.

But the worst dog bite I've ever seen was made by a small pitbull. He bit the room-mate of his owner, on the face, with no warning, just a sudden leap. The poor man was just walking up a stairs. His face required 47 stitches. In Halifax, there is a segment of society that has pitbulls. They are generally not pleasant people, and are often criminals as well. The same kind of people had Rottweilers before that, and Dobermans before that, and German Shepherds before that.

I firmly believe that you are taking a risk if you acquire the fashionable 'dangerous breed' of the day, because it is very likely that you will get the genetic descendant of poorly bred and badly cared for dogs, unless you are very, very careful about choosing a breeder.

Thirty years ago, you couldn't have paid me to walk near a Doberman. Today, I think the breed has recovered from its phase as a fashionably 'mean dog', and I would have one in my house without hesitation. Same goes for shepherds, and I think Rotties are likely recovering. But I wouldn't at this time trust any North American bred Pitbull type dog.

I've never been bitten by a dog. Many times by cats as my bout with Cat Scaratch Fever proved.

My first thought when I heard antoher storm was brewing was "Oh no! Bandit is driving up in here in that mess!" Priorities...

He may as well get used to the weather now I guess.

Any dog will bite given the right circumstance...I have only known 2 pitbulls personally and they were both very stupid and very gentle.

the only dog that ever bit me in malice was a white german shepard who later went nuts and attacked his owner.   My sister's bassett hound came close, but he was very old and I believe I'd made a snide remark about his odor... :-)

Great news! ITs good to hear good news.

bad news...
Kendall there is a little truth to your theory.
But the big truth is that a pit bull from a loving family is far more likely to devour an infant if left alone in the house together , than a more gentle breed.

Keep your fingers crossed for good weather for Friday and Saturday for me. I don't want to prolong the wait for our new canine any more than is necessary! There is a storm predicted and I'm hoping it just peters out or goes out to sea and doesn't affect anything between Tennessee and Maine!

Ranger1, let us know your first impressions of him when he arrives in your life. ALL of the dogs that I have rescued understood very quickly the bond between us.

Including the dog that I stilll miss even after she's been gone more than 30 years. My sister in law showed up at my door one day with a poodle; my sis had driven 60 miles because she was sure I would take her sight unseen; the dog's previous owner could no longer keep her.

About 3 hours later when she left, the dog was nowhere to be seen and didn't come out of hiding until she was gone. I had that dog for more than 13 years.

I told myself a half dozen times after various pets died that I'd never get another. Then some ugly stray would wander over, or some ratty starving thing would limp into view, or, or, or. I have rarely carried a gun so shooting the damned things was out. So, OK, ONE meal and hit the road. OK, you can stay the night, but tomorrow you go to the SPCA. OK, I don't have time to get you there just now, BUT, don't think you're staying for long. Then someone says, "Hey, man, that dog is UGly." (Yeah, but you say that again and he'll chomp yer parts for ya.) Then a few weeks have passed and he's learned not to piss on the floor, fetch a sock, be nice to folks. Then the fu#kin' thing is there seven years later and ya wonder how you ever lived without him. He's the dog that was seen humping a fire hydrant a few blocks away, and you find out that he's knocked up someone's pedigree poodle and the owners are pissed off, and he shows up after being 'out' for two days--no doubt knocking up someone ELSE'S pedigree poodle (or fire hydrant)--and he smells like he's been rolling in dead fish, and lo, he HAS been rolling in dead fish. He knows what the word 'bath' means, and catching him is a chore and a half. The same damned dog that doesn't understand 'sit', 'come' (in the sense of over here. He obviously knew what it meant when it involved pedigree poodles fer krissake) or 'stay' has a handle on soap, bath, tub. Sheesh. Anyway, never again. Never. Absolutely NEVer. Period. And that's final. I am NOT kidding.

I only know personally, two Pit Bulls, and they are both very loving animals. The reason, their OWNERS are the same way. It's not the breed, it's the idiots who need this sort of dog to feel like men, so they make them mean.

Hey all, thanks for the good wishes. We had some real specific needs in a dog that none of the dogs in the local shelters met. For example, the only dog in the Portland shelter last week was a pitbull. And, much as I do love the breed, my renter's insurance would have had a serious issue with it, not to mention my landlord. Getting the whole combination of good with cats, little kids and other dogs is tough. Bandit fits all three criteria, and well, we're suckers for generic yellow dogs, what can I say? And it kind of worked out like Spaw said...

Petfinder is a great site in many ways - just steer clear of most of the forums. There are hundreds of people posting there who definitely have sad-eyed puppy paintings on velvet hanging in their living rooms, and more than a few of them have no.sense.of.humour.at.all.

I'd never heard of the PetFinder site before this. What a great idea! It looks like any shelter can list their adoptees so there are loads more animals a person can choose from. Like a a job-finder site or a dating agency.
