Subject: Article about violin making From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 07 Mar 07 - 07:02 AM Monday's Daily Telegraph (5 March) had an interesting piece about Italian violins and their rivals. See telegraph.co.uk/pictures It tells us that the Chinese are going upmarket and supplies of wood are difficult, but ,most interestingly, describes the process of manufacture. |

Subject: RE: Article about violin making From: JohnInKansas Date: 07 Mar 07 - 10:14 PM The link given takes me to: Picture Galleries. Here, the seventh item in the list of galleries, "Italian violin workshops," links to a Javascript jump from the existing page, that will only "execute" from the page (or a page on the site) where it appears. The destination "slideshow" shows a real URL: Slideshow that may or may not let you straight in. Some sites block access to innard pages unless you come in through the front door and open all the doors in sequence. The "test" of this last link worked in preview, but I may have had their cookie from my previous look. John |

Subject: RE: Article about violin making From: The Sandman Date: 09 Mar 07 - 04:49 AM the law needs to be changed so italian fiddle makers can make 25 a year, the italian government,or the EC needs to provide subsidies for italian makers. Chinese fiddle makers will eventually demand more for their labour and chinese prices will rise.Chinese hand made fiddles are often good, but not excellent quality, which means many not so well off people can afford a good instrument. there should be room for both the italian and the chinese,. it is in my opinion the responsibility of the italian and ec governments to protect Cremona, and Italian hand made violins. |

Subject: RE: Article about violin making From: GUEST,Bardan Date: 09 Mar 07 - 07:56 AM It would be such a tragedy if serious violin making died out in cremona. Can't see it happening though. Even if its no longer cost-effective and the quality is no better, there'll always be prestige attached to having a violin from Cremona. (If I only had a few more tens of thousands of euros. *sigh*) |
