I'm just being annoyed (and probably annoying)-- after a quick review of the BS section I thought we could summarize most of the subjects, and about 99% of the posts, with this thread title.

No, sorry! I'm wrong-- I'd have had to add "and Everyone" to the title. My bad!

CHEER the hell UP! There must be something good in this world we could all agree upon!

Everything and Everyone Sucks... except music and Mudcatter musicians? Could we start from there?

Everything and Everyone Sucks... except music and Mudcatter musicians and just a few of our closest friends and family.....

Maybe we could get really wild:

Everything and Everyone Sucks... except music, Mudcatter musicians, a few of our closest friends and family, and the way we do one or two of the jobs we do in the world?

Lighten up! It starts with you!

:~)

Gravity sucks-- OK, let's get rid of it. Watch all the pretty people fly off the face of the earth into the void of space, who cares-- the air is gone off the planet as well so they're dead already!

No-- GRAVITY is that sense of knowing where I am, of knowing my strength when a strong wind tries to sweep me off my feet, or when the currents of deep water would knock me over. Saggy boobs, now THAT sucks, but it's not gravity's fault!

Sounds like a Grave Situation!

A Grave Situation

© Claude Morris

When I staggered away from my favourite pub,
The night was dark and still,
And I thought I'd take a short cut home,
That led over Cemetery Hill.
Now I'm not a hero as everyone knows,
And I have no reckless trends,
But ghosts and the like leave me cold, as it were,
And spirits and I are old friends.

I wobbled along through the cemetery gates,
Begging my legs to behave,
And everything went pretty well, so I thought,
Till I fell down a newly-dug grave.
For a moment I thought I had landed in hell,
And ended my earthly career.
I sniffed like a hound for the sulphurous fumes,
Expecting Old Nick to appear.

But reason returned and I staggered erect,
My prison so dark, to survey,
And tested my bones for a fracture or two,
But everything functioned O.K.
I made a feeble attempt to get out,
But it needed no more than a glance
To tell me that in my condition,
I hadn't the ghost of a chance.

I reckoned I'd have a lay-off for awhile,
And when I woke sober and fit,
I'd surely come up with a first-class idea,
That would get me up out of the pit.
Just then I could hear fast oncoming steps,
That seemed too good to be true,
But ere I could 'Coo-ee' or offer advice,
In the grave there were suddenly two!

It happened he fell in the grave's other end,
With no one to cushion his fall;
But he rose like a shot with a high-pitched yelp,
And attempted to scale up the wall.
This chap was at pains to be up and away,
As the capers he cut, plainly told;
He jumped and he scrambled and jumped again,
But his fingers and toes wouldn't hold.

I hadn't yet spoken - I'd hardly a chance,
The way he cavorted about,
And I had to admire the way that he fought
To sever all ties and get out.
Of course, he believed there was nobody near -
He thought he was there all alone,
And I got the idea it had entered his head
That the grave was becoming his own.

I felt a bit sad for the poor little guy,
Now acting a little distraught,
And I thought he'd relax if I gave him the drum,
That he wasn't alone, as he thought.
So I walked up behind him and tapped on his back
As he paused for another wild bid;
'You CAN'T make it mate,' I breathed in his ear —
But by the Lord Harry, he DID!

Susan, Maybe it's caused by Winter. Once it gets warmer, people will get out more and find something to be cheerful about. They'd better, otherwise, they suck.

In a 2001 article in _Dictionaries: Journal of The Dictionary Society of North America_ ("The Putative Vulgarity of _X Sucks_ in American English"), Ron Butters makes a compelling argument that "X sucks" did not originally have a fellatory sense, instead emerging out of such previous expressions as "X sucks eggs", "X sucks the hind teat", and "X sucks wind". However, it didn't take long for "X sucks" to be interpreted as referring to fellatio. "X sucks" has been found from in print from 1963, while "X sucks dick" (meaning "X is bad/objectionable") turns up in Vietnam-era graffiti from the late '60s.

Maybe "sucks" came from sucks lemons...

Here's a post that suggest that:

"When life gives you lemons, suck on them. Seriously, lemons taste awesome.

(idea) by wertperch Fri Mar 23 2001

Ever attempt to whistle whilst sucking a lemon?

It is tricky trying to whistle cheerfully when your mouth is assaulted by astringent, acid fruit - your teeth stand on edge, your cheeks tighten - no-one is at their best in these circumstances. This harsh fruit tastes better once marinated in, say, a nice gin and tonic - the bittersweet flavour is more pleasing, mellow, and a positive pleasure on the palate. You relax, focus on the pleasure, and then pucker up to produce pure, clear, sweet notes.

Such, too is life - a Pollyanna can find a joyous side to any situation. Look sideways at your life, your lemon, and take pleasure that you can still enjoy some part of it. Pick your figurative liquor, the correct cocktail in which to soak it, and life can no longer render you bereft of joy."

I read somewhere once that, if you REALLY want to put a trumpet player off his (or her) stride, suck a lemon while standing in front of them.

Apparently they will start to pucker and lose their embouchere.......

It would proably work for any instrument that requires blowing.

Haven't done it myself but it could be funny.

Because although they are two different words, they refer to the same activity. The former refers to one person'a action in the activity, the latter to the other's.

The term "sucks" is a peculiar one. It intimates that it has a sexual basis.

I think that sucking is fine. I like infants sucking on breasts, the sucking in sex, the sucking on a lozenge, the sucking of a vacuum when it cleans a rug,the delicious sucking on a straw of a fine beverage, the metaphorical sucking on a good idea or work of art.

I don't know why it is but sexual references always seem to be used to denegrate something.
Maybe it's the inheritance of the Judeo-Christian Meme that disses the procreative process.
I say if everything sucks, this might well be a wonderful thing.

I remember well those childhood Sundays when my brother and I would walk across Ladbroke Grove in Nawff Lunnon, and suck lemons in front of the Salvation Army brass band that played outside the Spread Eagle pub.

Stopped 'em in their tracks, it did.

I lost count of the times we were chased two hundred yards by angry, sweating musicians with spittle from their flooded instruments leaving a slimy trail

Then one Sunday we ran slap bang into P.C. Robinson. Ears ringing from the hefty clouts he used to propel us homeward, we then had an interview with Dad, which removed any inclination to eat sitting down for more than 24 hours.

But those buggers woke us up two hours before we wanted waking, and the sight of them dribbling as the music choked off into silence....HELL, IT WAS WORTH IT!
