Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Mar 07 - 05:09 PM The original is Mothering Sunday, the third Sunday in Lent, when people took the opportunity to visit the 'mother cathedral' or church. Because Lent is a moveable feast, dependant on Passover and lunar calendars, so is Mothering Sunday. Various countries decided to pick a particular date and stick with it. That got called Mothers Day and so the name started to be used in the UK. We have Mothering Sunday rather than Mothers Day but most of the cards and gifts have Mothers Day on them, so that's what it's become. But as a mother, thanks. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY From: JennyO Date: 17 Mar 07 - 08:57 PM Where is it Mother's Day this weekend? Is it the US? Sounds like the UK Mothering Sunday is the same date as Mothers Day in Oz. Here, it's always the second Sunday in May, which is 8 weeks away. What a shame it's not today - I've been doing a lot of mothering lately and a break would be nice. Anyway, Happy Mothers Day to the mothers who celebrate it, and a thought for the others who don't. I reckon we deserve a medal! Oh yes, and Happy Mothers Day to MOAB! |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY From: JennyO Date: 17 Mar 07 - 09:02 PM Now I'm confused. Just read the thread again. Is it Mothers Day in the UK this weekend and Mothering Sunday later in the US? |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY From: Jeri Date: 17 Mar 07 - 09:07 PM It's the UK. Mothers' Day in the US is 13 May this year. |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY From: JennyO Date: 17 Mar 07 - 09:26 PM Thanks Jeri - I was wrong the first time and right the second. So you guys celebrate it on the same Sunday we do here in Oz - and we always call it Mothers Day, never Mothering Sunday. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Mother's Day From: Mooh Date: 18 Mar 07 - 08:27 AM Yes. Happy Mother's Day, though it's not yet time in Canada. On Mother's Day 2005 my own mother passed away, and though it would be tempting to get all sad about the timing, it was strangely appropriate and typical of Mum to hold on so that she could see the family one more time as most visited that day. So instead of grief, I remember fondly and with happy love, as she would have liked. Her life was well lived and well loved. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Mother's Day From: Donuel Date: 19 Mar 07 - 08:01 AM I always thought that Mothers day should be 9 months after Valentines Day....lets say a day after Thanksgiving. |
