I heard (when I was at the Shroppie last month) someone say it was Nov 13th.
Same date as the Chester ceilidh so we'll go to Audlem in the afternoon then to Hoole to enjoy one of my favourite bands and callers.

Sorry everyone - a senior month or two - I just forgot!

It's the 13th Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Day on Saturday 13th November this year in the Shroppie Fly, Audlem, Cheshire CW3 0DX.

The same format as previous years, starts around noon and goes on until the last one goes home for tea!

Meals served in the pub, and there are two other pubs in the village also serving meals and drinks.

Bagpipes and hurdy gurdies are especially welcomed but other musicians are welcome too. We usually get around 30 to 40 players.

If someone can tell me the date of the event in 2011, I can include it in the festivals list in the forthcoming issue of English Dance & Song magazine. Plus contact details of the organiser. But I realise that the date may only be fixed a little closer to the event!
thanks

Will there be any singing or is it just session playing?

It's mainly tunes, though I have a feeling an occasional song has been heard.

It should be finished around early evening, ideal time for the 30 min drive to the barn dance with Baz Parkes and the Boat Band,in Penkhull Village Hall(Stoke-on-Trent). You could go by canal, but it would take two days.

Only sadly, due to a variety of senior moments, it's not Baz Parkes and the Boat Band. It's Dave HUnt and the Boat Band. If you wanted to drive a little further you could dance to All Blacked Up and Baz Parkes at Antrobus Village hall...though I'm not sure how accessable that is by canal...

You're quite right, Baz, a momentary aberration. We do actually have the estimable Dave Hunt calling that night. Baz Parkes will be calling in Penkhull on Feb 18next year though, so book early now. The band will be the Watch.

Since we're promoting ceilidhs, the one in Hoole that evening which Mo referred to above is a fundraiser for Chester Folk Festival. The band is Albireo with Rhodri Davies calling.

As Greg says, its mainly tunes but there's the occasional song.

With it being a bagpipe and hurdy gurdy day, most people come to hear and collect bagpipe and hurdy gurdy tunes, though unusual instruments have made themselves heard from time to time.

So how was it for you?

It was good. There was a certain amount of "haven't we done that one before?" "ah, yes but it was in a different key". Then , just as we were thinking it was time to go and get our dancing clothes on it seemed to switch into session tunes mode, and we wished we could stay longer.

Albireo and Rhodri were excellent as ever, too.

A good day.
