BS: Worlds worst pie

This has surely got to be the ' scotch pie ' ie. a mutton pie, absolutely disgusting, it's a practical joke that the Scots play on tourists.

We were once given them in a packed lunch whilst on a fishing holiday on the River Nith, we threw them on the river bank and even the rats wouldn't eat them.

As a song, it's not great. As a piece of artistic reference, tying a lot of the culture of the previous 15 years together, it's fantastic. It certainly appealed to all sorts of people who had lived through that era..including yours truly. In that era and in others before and since, mostly since, there have been more than a few songs which made their mark by referring to other songs and events.

Drunk man goes into a fairground, on his way home from the pub. He decides to have a go on the coconut shy, where more by good luck than good judgement, he won a prize, and this prize was a tortoise [turtle in US]
The following evening he turned up at the fairground again, drunk as usual, had another go on the coconut shy, and won a prize again.
The showman asked him what prize he would like this time, and he said.
"Can I have another one of those crusty meat pies like last night, please?"

We in the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism did an event, many years ago, with a Scottish theme. We planned on serving haggis, but were thwarted by state laws that prohibited the sale of several indgrediants, most notably sheep's lungs. So the lady in charge of the feast used I know not what creature's innards in a pie, almost nobody wanted to eat, certainly not me.

Scottish meat pies as served at the Highland Games are sublime. Of course, over here, they use lamb. My taste buds do bud ups for weeks before the games, knowing they're going to get a meat pie with a dab of worcestershire sauce on top.

Well it was part of being young, and I look back with great fondness on all the really crap pies I've eaten.

Lyons Individual Fruit Pies - the fruit filling always tasted the same, whatever the supposed flavour - 100% sugar!

Walls Steak and Kidney in attactive cellophane packet with a blue and red badge. It was before microwaves - they used to be lodged for weeks in a little stove/display that sat on the pub counter. The filling was so hot - the taste was something approaching an oxo cube dropped in nitric acid. Each pie had at least one lump of gristle that you could have mended the sole of your tuf town shoes with.

Pukka Pies mentioned before. these were an exciting addition to 1960's cuisine - there were exotic flavours like Chicken and mushroom - with meat that was recognisably and unarguably chicken. Unfortunately the pastry - particularly of the base did bear an uncanny resemblance to thick damp cardboard.

In 1965, My Uncle George from Brecksville, Ohio came and paid us his one and only visit. Wherever he went - he kept requesting Pizza Pie. In Lincolnshire at the time - Pizza was completely unknown. So people just thought it was his exotic pronunciation and they kept bringing him a piece of pie.
He went home a disappointed man. It wasn't til years later, we got together as a family and fathomed out the source of his frustration.

Talking of crap pies, has anyone ever fell foul of an Ivor Dewdney pie down in Exeter?

I used to like the loook of them - because they were big pies. However the taste never failed to disappoint.

I believe the poet Philip Larkin used to love Ivor Dewdney's creations and beg friends who were visiting Exeter to get him one. A certain masochism involved there I think. No wonder he was miserable.

I googled "Vinegar" pie and it probably isn't half bad - it was pointed out that the vinegar does the same basic thing that lemon juice would to - add some acidity to the basic sugar taste. But it's one of those recipes that was developed for when you were broke and really wanted something sweet and didn't have much to work with (one lady said her great grandmother who emigrated to the prairies and lived in a sod house in Kansas used to make it in the winter when they had used up all the dried fruit). Why would anyone want to do that nowadays when most of us have, at any given time, access to much better ingredients. It's in the same category with Tomato Soup Cake and Ritz Cracker Pie . I've had both and while they are edible, and the Ritz Cracker Pie does kinda sorta taste like apple pie, why would you substitute processed crackers for apples...?

You can find vinegar pie in the cookbooks of recipes from chuckwagons and other times when ingredients might be scarce. We had a grape arbor and my mother canned grapes, grapes jelly, grape jam, and grape juice for the winter. Grape pie made from canned grapes included the seeds....

I always thought those scotch pies were a piss take after I ordered one in a chippy near Maryhill years ago. It was dropped in the chip fryer to warm it up. In later years I used to hear references to the Glasgow delicacy of deap fried mars bars. Never seen one but after remembering the greasy mutton pie, I don't disbelieve it.

I can't stand the taste of kidney - but I have eaten a fried Mars bar and although it sounds disgusting it was sublime. Coated in some kind of crumbs, deep fried and the chocolate melts and gets a slightly 'burned' flavor, then sprinkled with powdered sugar (as if more sugar was needed). I just tried it the one time - wouldn't want to make a habit of it because I can't imagine how many calories it has.

Just remembered a couple of something alleged to be chicken pot pies that I bought in Chicago years ago in bachelor days. The very worst excuse for food that I have ever seen packaged and marketed. I might have known they were just too cheap to be credible. A smear of greasy gravy, a couple of shriveled peas, a couple of rubbery cubes of carrot, and a shred of stringy chicken meat, between pieces of cardboard.

Back in the days of my youth, there were three couples of us who would get together to play euchre, then have refreshments after. Around Thanksgiving one of the other wives offered to bring dessert when we were meeting at our place. She made a pumpkin pie. We bit into it and tried not to make any faces, etc., until her husband remarked "This is God-awful. What'd you do to it?" Seems she thought all you had to do is pour a can of pumpkin into a pie shell and bake it. Luckily we had something around to substitute.

Raisins have their rightful place, but not in a pie, not in rice pudding, nor on top of cookies. In those combinations they are "Yuck"

People go through significant effort to dehydrate grapes, through mechanical or sun drying processes and I applaud their zeal for the job.

IMO, it is just wrong, and not too efficient, to put them through the reverse process to hydrate them again, in a pie, or other baked product. Much is lost through such foolhardy exploits.

There are pies, and there are pies. I think it's illogical to talk about pies meant as main dishes and pies meant as desserts as if they were of the same ilk. They aren't. The only thing a chicken pot pie and an apple pie have in common is that they both have crusts. Comparing them is like comparing a chocolate cake and a loaf of pumpernickel, or a glazed donut and bagel. They have similar outward appearances, but that's all.

Having said that, I don't get the point of meat pies. They're nothing but stew with a crust. Why bother? Just make the friggin' stew and spend the time you'd waste making the crust playing guitar.

As for dessert pies, some may be better than others, but even the worst is still better than any cake (with the possible exception of German chocolate or carrot cake).
