By Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Senior Writer updated 10/14/2011 6:19:29 PM ET 2011-10-14T22:19:29 The radio preacher who predicted Judgment Day on May 21 has not backed down from his claims that the end of the world is near, despite the lack of a Rapture or world-devastating earthquakes leading up to the doomsday. In an announcement on his Family Radio Network website, Harold Camping stands by his earlier predictions that the world will end on Friday, Oct. 21. Originally, Camping had predicted hourly earthquakes and God's judgment on May 21, to be followed by months of torment on Earth for those individuals left behind. Using numerical codes extracted from the Bible, Camping set the date for the end of everything for Oct. 21. When May 21 came and went without fanfare, Camping revised his story. The "earthquakes" he had predicted did occur, he writes on his website in a post titled "What Happened on May 21?" — only instead of shaking the Earth, God shook mankind "with fear." Likewise, although no one was raptured, God is no longer saving souls, Camping writes. |

He gives the observation a unique flavor that's all his own. So we all see somethin' a bit different, even though we are supposedly all lookin' at the same thing. Still, you gotta be there to be the observer, don'tcha? If the world ended, would we know it? If we are part of the world, we wouldn't know it cos we would have ended too. If we are existin' at some level independent from the world (which I guess could be a possibility) then we might notice it from that other place of observin', and say, "Well that world we was playin' around in has ended." If so, I figger we'd either be in some new kinda "world" or else we'd just be sorta like the bodiless observer that is everywhere at the same time. I know some Jehovah's Witnesses, and none of them think they are among the 144,000 who to to heaven. They assume they probably are not. What they do think is that many millions of good people (including, hopefully themselves) will remain on the Earth but will live in a new paradise-like planet that has been transformed into a fertile, peaceful environment where both Nature and the human race flourish in natural balance, where there's no more war, one unified society that welcomes all races equally, etc... So this thing they believe about the 144,000 does not refer to the presumed destiny of most JWs, but just to a small minority of them. I will say this: Although I do not share the belief system of the JWs, all of them that I have met have been good people, good neighbours, people I felt that I could trust to be good neighbours...and that counts for a lot. This doesn't mean I buy their beliefs, but it does mean I respect them. |

Couldn't ask for better people. Those who have knocked on my door have been invited in if it's convenient, and though not necessarily pleased when I passed on the religion stuff, never gave up trying to help me see the light. Once a month, like clockwork, there they were. Nice people. My fellow firefighter couldn't respond to MVCs because the possibility of having to help with transfusions (volume expanders) was opposed to his beliefs. He was one helluva pump operator though, and since that's who folks on the sharp end depend on, ya just don't pass 'em up. As LH said, good people and great neighbours. I do however agree with Gnu. This knock on the door at 2:15 pm stuff is a bit much, and sometimes that's early in the morning to me. With them I have never had to be impolite in order to say goodbye. |

Jehovah's Witnesses They don't have any beliefs about the Rapture. They do have some other beliefs that are quite unusual in mainstream Christianity, such as... - They do not believe in the Trinity - They do not believe in the traditional Hell (their translation of the word Hell ("sheol") is simply..."the grave"...that is, a nonconscious state after death. You don't get punished...you simply die, your body goes into dissolution, and you cease to have any conscious existence at all from that point on...although there are provisions for some to be resurrected at some point into another physical life. - they do not believe Jesus was crucified on a cross, they think he was executed on a single wooden torture stake (as opposed to the traditional cross). Why they believe that, I don't know. It probably has to do with how their elders have interpreted their translations of the Bible text in its earliest linguistic form. And so on...quite a few distinct divergences from what people usually associate with Christianity. This, of course, makes them apostates in the view of most other Christian churches, and the other churces are apostates in their view. They ALL, however, use various translations of the Bible as their authority, but do not necessaril agree on which translation is the "best" one or how to interpret it. There have been some similar schisms and diffrences of doctrine in the Muslim faith, and probably in most other major religions as well. It seems to be what usually happens as time goes by with any religion. Anyway, the article makes for interesting reading if you want to know what makes the JWs tick, and how they differ from other Christians. |

I heard about it when I went to the Viet-Thai restaurant this afternoon. Some old buildings that were right back of the LCBO (for non-Canadians...that is the liquor store) caught fire and burnt down...but desperate countermeasures by the fire department managed to prevent the LCBO itself from burning down along with them. Whew! For this town that would have been the end of the world. Specially on a Saturday, eh? The LCBO did not burn, but it has lost its electrical power for the moment, so it's closed until that gets fixed. People are...like...in a state of shock, eh? Damn good thing there's another LCBO in this town over by the Zehr's Plaza. Yup. The world as we know it almost flippin' ended. |
