The radio preacher who predicted Judgment Day on May 21 has not backed down from his claims that the end of the world is near, despite the lack of a Rapture or world-devastating earthquakes leading up to the doomsday.

In an announcement on his Family Radio Network website, Harold Camping stands by his earlier predictions that the world will end on Friday, Oct. 21. Originally, Camping had predicted hourly earthquakes and God's judgment on May 21, to be followed by months of torment on Earth for those individuals left behind. Using numerical codes extracted from the Bible, Camping set the date for the end of everything for Oct. 21.

When May 21 came and went without fanfare, Camping revised his story. The "earthquakes" he had predicted did occur, he writes on his website in a post titled "What Happened on May 21?" — only instead of shaking the Earth, God shook mankind "with fear." Likewise, although no one was raptured, God is no longer saving souls, Camping writes.

If you blunder into this intricate schedule by changing something as substantial as your granddaughter's birthday party, it could put off the whole End Times or even turn it into a mere celestial foodfight.

I wouldn't sweat it. In my long and checkered life, people have told me that the world was going to end on such-and-such a date many times. As the date approaches, I go outside, look up at the heavens, and yell, "Hey! Knock it off up there!" The date comes and goes and nothing happens.

Yeah, man. I musta seen a few hundred of these predictions come and go in my lifetime. The only thing I can figger is...either they were all wrong...or maybe the world ended in one split second that was so quick no one noticed, and then it started up again in a perfect imitation of its previous self...sorta like startin' up a computer game again after a power outage.

And no one noticed the difference, cos ya can only notice somethin' when yer "there", not when you ain't. ;-D

`dunno bout a rapture, but trying to get into my space suit in order to be ready to go to Heaven has given me a rupture.

Thing I can't work out if if like me you lead a good life, help lame dogs over stiles, remember your wife's birthday, clear the dog shit off the lawn, be polite when closing the door on Jehovah's Witnesses, notice another bit of dogs hit you missed last time, don't bugger off to the bog when it's your round, clean your teeth twice a day, polish your guitars, don't raid the fridge three times during Top Gear, ruddy dog shit again, wash your car, buy your wife flowers etc etc etc..

But.. you don't have an imaginary friend.

It's profound, but incomplete. Heisenberg noted that the act of being there to make the observation interferes with what one observes. So obviously the only way to see things clearly is 'not be there'. However, when we couple that to the philosophical insight that 'no matter where you go, there you are', well, you can see where that road leads. That's right, it leads to Rome. Obviously, the only way to notice Rome is when y'ain't there.

You got a good point there, 999, about how the observer bein' there affects the observation cos the observer puts his own way of thinkin' into the observation...kinda like puttin' a measure of salt and pepper into the soup. He gives the observation a unique flavor that's all his own. So we all see somethin' a bit different, even though we are supposedly all lookin' at the same thing. Still, you gotta be there to be the observer, don'tcha?

If the world ended, would we know it? If we are part of the world, we wouldn't know it cos we would have ended too. If we are existin' at some level independent from the world (which I guess could be a possibility) then we might notice it from that other place of observin', and say, "Well that world we was playin' around in has ended."

If so, I figger we'd either be in some new kinda "world" or else we'd just be sorta like the bodiless observer that is everywhere at the same time. That would mean ya wouldn't need no money or clothes no longer, which would sorta take the pressure off, wouldn't it?

That's not quite it, gnu. I know some Jehovah's Witnesses, and none of them think they are among the 144,000 who to to heaven. They assume they probably are not. What they do think is that many millions of good people (including, hopefully themselves) will remain on the Earth but will live in a new paradise-like planet that has been transformed into a fertile, peaceful environment where both Nature and the human race flourish in natural balance, where there's no more war, one unified society that welcomes all races equally, etc...

So this thing they believe about the 144,000 does not refer to the presumed destiny of most JWs, but just to a small minority of them.

I will say this: Although I do not share the belief system of the JWs, all of them that I have met have been good people, good neighbours, people I felt that I could trust to be good neighbours...and that counts for a lot. This doesn't mean I buy their beliefs, but it does mean I respect them.

I fought fires with a fellow who was a JW. I taught one of his sons and one of his daughters. Couldn't ask for better people. Those who have knocked on my door have been invited in if it's convenient, and though not necessarily pleased when I passed on the religion stuff, never gave up trying to help me see the light. Once a month, like clockwork, there they were. Nice people.

My fellow firefighter couldn't respond to MVCs because the possibility of having to help with transfusions (volume expanders) was opposed to his beliefs. He was one helluva pump operator though, and since that's who folks on the sharp end depend on, ya just don't pass 'em up. As LH said, good people and great neighbours.

I do however agree with Gnu. This knock on the door at 2:15 pm stuff is a bit much, and sometimes that's early in the morning to me. With them I have never had to be impolite in order to say goodbye.

Les Barker's song "Jehova's Witness at the Door" sums it up for me. Mind you, a branch of my family are of that particular persuasion, although I believe it started as a "conchy" stunt during the war by one of them and the joke was on them because like crabs, it seems to be catching.

Nice people though, seem to smile more than is good for you, but nice people. Just don't get them started or your coffee will go cold and if, like me, you put somebody's life above their father's belief, don't get them (or me) started on blood transfusions.

Anyway, anybody know what their take is on the rapture? If they don't have a view, then sack their PR man.

Here's a lengthy article all about the origins, structure, and beliefs of the JWs.

Jehovah's Witnesses

They don't have any beliefs about the Rapture. They do have some other beliefs that are quite unusual in mainstream Christianity, such as...

- They do not believe in the Trinity
- They do not believe in the traditional Hell (their translation of the word Hell ("sheol") is simply..."the grave"...that is, a nonconscious state after death. You don't get punished...you simply die, your body goes into dissolution, and you cease to have any conscious existence at all from that point on...although there are provisions for some to be resurrected at some point into another physical life.
- they do not believe Jesus was crucified on a cross, they think he was executed on a single wooden torture stake (as opposed to the traditional cross). Why they believe that, I don't know. It probably has to do with how their elders have interpreted their translations of the Bible text in its earliest linguistic form.

And so on...quite a few distinct divergences from what people usually associate with Christianity. This, of course, makes them apostates in the view of most other Christian churches, and the other churces are apostates in their view. They ALL, however, use various translations of the Bible as their authority, but do not necessaril agree on which translation is the "best" one or how to interpret it.

There have been some similar schisms and diffrences of doctrine in the Muslim faith, and probably in most other major religions as well. It seems to be what usually happens as time goes by with any religion.

Anyway, the article makes for interesting reading if you want to know what makes the JWs tick, and how they differ from other Christians.

Myself, I can't really see what difference it makes whether it was a cross or a stake...but people do love to argue over technicalities, don't they? I mean, they've got to be RIGHT about it, don't they???? Wars have been fought over being RIGHT about things like that...and the winners always feel quite justified afterward in having made the bloody sacrifices. Just ask them. As for the losers, they grit their teeth and bide their time....waiting for their chance to "set the record straight".

Since you gonna be dead soon might as well go out in style..." so I pulled in and bought a pack of Pell Mell cigarettes and soon as I got home I went back in the woods and opened them up and went thru all that old smokers stuff like pounding the pack on the palm of my hand to get the tobacco all packed tight and then lit one up...

They had a big fire in the downtown this morning! I heard about it when I went to the Viet-Thai restaurant this afternoon. Some old buildings that were right back of the LCBO (for non-Canadians...that is the liquor store) caught fire and burnt down...but desperate countermeasures by the fire department managed to prevent the LCBO itself from burning down along with them.

Whew! For this town that would have been the end of the world. Specially on a Saturday, eh?

The LCBO did not burn, but it has lost its electrical power for the moment, so it's closed until that gets fixed. People are...like...in a state of shock, eh? Damn good thing there's another LCBO in this town over by the Zehr's Plaza.

Yup. The world as we know it almost flippin' ended.
