I used to live just north of Watson's home area (Kirkintilloch/Campsies, north-east of Glasgow) but never heard of him. Some of the poem and song titles here (POEMS AND SONGS by WALTER WATSON - THE CHRYSTON POET ) seem familiar, however. Can't figure out if Tony Cuffe made the tune or adapted an existing one. Where did you find the link between this and "The Newcastle Worthies", Conrad? Also, you appear to have contributed an ABC version of the (a?) tune to this thread:- thread.cfm?threadid=3667 Higher up in that same thread, Joe Offer suggests "The Wearing of the Green" as the tune. It would fit, but it's not the tune Tony Cuffe is singing. Ross |

The song became popular, at least in Scotland, after he recorded it on the first "Jock Tamson's Bairns" LP, released in 1980. It was also included in Tony's "memorial" CD, titled "Sae Will We Yet", which came out in 2003. |

The song and tune from John Greig's Scots Minstrelsie(1895) can be found here: Scots Minstrelsie Vol6 (see pages 375-377; click on the thumbnails for the full image). The tune is not the same as the Polwarth version above. A broadside (1869) can be seen here: We've Aye Been Provided For - Poet's Box; the tune to be used is give as original Ord (1933), as Joe said in the other thread, specifies The Wearing of The Green.
