Just as a point of interest, Bobby Darin recorded this song. He recorded two albums, prior to his early death, on Atlantic records during the folk-boom of the late 60's. They were primarily folk-based material, including a few Tim Hardin songs.

The first album was nearly worn flat on my record player. I may have to dig this one out of the collection for one more turn.

The song was written by Tim Hardin and came out on his second LP.(remember them),released in 1967.

Howdy John, nice to meet you. Yes, unfortunately I do remember "records". I also remember them costing about 3 dollars U.S. back in the day. How I sweated out which one to buy when I got the money together. Standing at the rack and reading them over 'til they were ready to throw me out of there. Of course, you could always buy three or four 45's for that kind of dough. How times change.

God what an old folkie you are! It was nice to meet you and sing some John Prine at Annap's.

I remember this song best from a Bobby Darin album. He did a wonderful job with many Tim Hardin songs and some others.

Here's the only verse I remember.

I think this was originally performed by King Edward.
Oh, never mind. I'm mixing it up with a verse from "Love, Love Alone" which asserts he (Edward) "must go with the Lady from Baltimore". Not the same thing at all.

Face or place?

When I first heard Tim Hardin perform this song at the Night Owl Cafe in New York City he would sing:

The lady came from Baltimore,
All she wore was lace,
She didn't know that I was poor,
She never saw my place.

Then Joan Baez recorded it and sang:

She never saw my face.

At first Tim resisted. After all, Susan Moore and the thief were lovers. Of course she would have seen his face, at least in the literal sense. What she had not seen was his place, either in terms of his social standing or his abode.

Alas, in time Joanie's lyrics won out. The last time I heard Tim Hardin, he, too, was singing face instead of place.
