17 May 00 - 03:51 PM (#229475) Subject: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Joe Offer, Keeper of the FAQ, is intrigued by the idea of adding a link to a select group of Mudcat Classic Threads, a list which would probably number 10 or less, but would serve as an introduction to the wide range of discussion on the Forum. Threads like Spancil Hill, the Vietnam Thread, and even the Tiple and Hoky Poky Threads might have a place. These threads could be maintained in their original forms, without addition or modification by new posters. Any feelings on this idea? Any nominations? LEJ This is the master list, including old links removed from the FAQ.

17 May 00 - 03:56 PM (#229478) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: TerriM Haven't been around long enough to nominate but I think it's a really good idea. |
17 May 00 - 03:59 PM (#229482) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: MMario The thread re: "the fox" song from just before the getaway last fall would be a good one. That came up with a lot of variations, etc. Good discussion thread. |
17 May 00 - 04:12 PM (#229491) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: GUEST,Okiemockbird I vaguely recall a hilarious thread about "how to write a folk song", from 1997-1998 or thereabouts, but I can't locate it. If it exists and is anything like I remember, I nominate it to be considered for "classic" status. T. |
17 May 00 - 04:22 PM (#229498) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: SeanM I do admit that I'm unclear as to what format this is taking... Will it be the threads themselves permafrosted? Or would it be a thread that contained links to the top threads, which would then just be left in the normal forum? M |
17 May 00 - 04:24 PM (#229500) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Where possible, when suggesting a classic thread, please give a clickable link, such as Spancil Hill, or the thread address. |
17 May 00 - 04:25 PM (#229501) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: MK Well many have told me, they thought the BRAZILIAN vs. INDIAN ROSEWOOD thread was a classic. Your call though. |

17 May 00 - 04:29 PM (#229503) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: sophocleese Lonesome EJ I would respectfully like to submit that any thread to which I deigned to post would certainly count as a classic and must be included. |
17 May 00 - 04:30 PM (#229505) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: sophocleese Otherwise I'm leaving and won't post again, so there! |

17 May 00 - 04:35 PM (#229510) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ "I do admit that I'm unclear as to what format this is taking... Will it be the threads themselves permafrosted? Or would it be a thread that contained links to the top threads, which would then just be left in the normal forum?" ....Sean M Sean, I think the basic idea is to create a Permafrosted FAQ section with click links to the 10 classic threads. The classic threads could be in turn permafrosted to prevent additional postings, or they could be left as functioning threads. Max has expressed a desire to hold Permathreads to a minimum, so 10 classic permathreads may not be an option. |
17 May 00 - 04:38 PM (#229512) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Soph, I would have to agree with you about the high quality of your postings. The final decision, if the idea goes forward, should probably be left to Max. Or we could vote. |
17 May 00 - 04:39 PM (#229514) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: MMario Now what I thought he meant was a "Classic Threads" permafrosted, that thread would then have linkages to the "classics" - with lil' Leej editor of the permafrosted thread, which of course is where 'catters would post argueing that THEIR favorites should be included in the list... *grin* |
17 May 00 - 04:41 PM (#229516) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Peter T. Although I agree with the nominations above, and could think of lots more, I think that they would be better incorporated in the NewComers Guide. While the Permathread is a nice idea, I think that we should have only one of them. The top of the posting space for threads is very valuable real estate -- I would be very reluctant to add any more -- I don't want to have to look at them every time I check in -- having the FAQ is good, but no more. I think the FAQ should be restructured so it is short and has all the possible additional threads clickable from it. One is enough. yours, Peter T. |
17 May 00 - 04:44 PM (#229518) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Peter, if the Classics were permafrosted, I don't think they would also have to be placed at the top of the forum. |
17 May 00 - 04:54 PM (#229526) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Sorcha I garuntee ya, 'spaw is gonna want permafrosted breasts! (Definitely the VietNam Thread) |
17 May 00 - 05:00 PM (#229530) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: SeanM Thanks, LEJ! It's all so clear now... My only other input is that I'm personally not comfortable with the idea of "locking" the thread against further commentary. You never know, someone may have something good to add. And the rest of the chaff can always be edited out occasionally. M |
17 May 00 - 05:04 PM (#229533) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Sean, I understand how you feel. Maybe we could just reserve the right to delete flames or other disruptive posts from the classic threads. here is the clicker for Vietnam Songs |
17 May 00 - 05:08 PM (#229535) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: SeanM It's been done rarely before, when Joe's taken out something that had no purpose except to cause harm. Maybe just criteria the level to "on topic", and transfer/delete anything else inappropriate, from the threads in question? Could be a good thing, in any case. M |
17 May 00 - 05:59 PM (#229548) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: GUEST,kat/katlaughing Here's the list I've sent out to a few Mudcatters who've asked about memorable threads before. I'll try to get the links in later when I have more time. I am not particularly saying they should all be permafrosted, but they are favs and wonderful to read regardless. Thanks for starting this one, LeeJ, should be interesting.
The Village of Mudcat For some reason I don't see the Columbine thread from last year, but it is certainly memorable. Thanks, kat |
17 May 00 - 06:08 PM (#229550) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Peter T. Well, I don't understand where else they could be permafrosted -- further down the list somewhere? Then they would move, and wouldn't be permafrosted. yours, Peter T. |
17 May 00 - 06:15 PM (#229554) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: katlaughing Sorry, I forgot to reset my cookie. Peter, I think there could be another area with a Quick Link, maybe which would be a repository for them? But, I agree, I wouldn't want them to be frozen to new postings AND, I wouldn't want them to be moved from the Forum, so not sure what the answer would be there. |
17 May 00 - 06:20 PM (#229557) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Mbo Hmmm...all those threads were before my time. I can't say I would have posted to them even if I was around. All of them are out of my league... --Mbo |
17 May 00 - 06:59 PM (#229569) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: GUEST,TTCM Definitely the "Compassion vs. Honesty" thread. We definitely consider that a classic, along with any previous messages posted, assailing the poster of the preceding message. |
17 May 00 - 08:14 PM (#229607) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Alice Leej, I already started this long ago. It is under links called "Memorable Mudcat Threads". Go to the links and choose if from the drop down menu. Let me know the few choice that you want on there that are not already included. No reason to duplicate this. Alice Flynn |
17 May 00 - 08:32 PM (#229612) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Amos I think there has never been the match for the fiction writing that started in Mbo's Soda Shop thread, but I don't remember its title -- the whole fantasy of Dead Man's curve and the US1 hoodlums was amazing.
Second among the most peerless writing samples on the 'Cat is the fictional thread that ended up with Robert Johnson picking up the flatfoot at "the crossroads". Again I have lost the name. But I know LEJ was a main voice. . Third, again on powerful fictional writing, our recent Tavern Steamboat was one of the most amazing pieces of composite fiction I have ever seen. The current Enterprise thread might turn out to be a close competitior, because Peter T has done some amazing characterization and dialogue writing in it. A |

18 May 00 - 03:33 AM (#229767) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: The Shambles There are diverse tastes, on The Mudcat and that is it's strength. There will be great difficulty in getting any agreement as to what constitutes, say ten of the best threads. With the new search they are all only a click away and it is great fun and very imformative just to browse through them. New folk may be discouraged from doing this if they think that the best ten threads are already displayed for them? I think we can all make suggestions as to our favourites but if a number are to be chosen to permanently represent the forum, then I feel it is only fair that the choice of those should be Max's. |
18 May 00 - 03:58 AM (#229775) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Joe Offer Well, tentatively, "Mudcat Classic Threads" will be a list here (click) (the second message) in the Mudcat FAQ, prepared by LEJ and edited by me - taken from suggestions submitted by the rest of you in this thread and others. Some threads may stay on the list for a long time, and some won't - that's all up to LEJ. Note also that Alice Flynn has provided links to Memorable Mudcat Threads on our Links Page(click). The links Alice has been maintaining may tend to be a bit more permanent in nature. We're trying to keep the FAQ an ever-changing thing, and LEJ's "Classic" list will be one of the ever-changing features. -Joe Offer- |
26 May 00 - 02:47 AM (#234127) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ OK, the Classic Threads List is up on the FAQ. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, and who sent me personal messages and suggestions, and particularly Amos who suggested the format. These threads should not be looked on as a "best of" Mudcat list (although some are really good!), but as a sampling for Newcomers of the kinds of topics we talk about here, and an explanation of the nature of some of the ongoing threads and obscure references that are made. It can also be a repository for some of our favorite moments. Although I asked for suggestions and used many, I realize that the list represents my final choices, and so are not entirely objective. There are hundreds of great threads that I didn't sight, and may not even be aware of. And so, as Joe has already mentioned, except for the obvious exception of The First Thread, the Classic Threads will change as often as you like. Maybe folks would like to submit their own Classic Threads list monthly? I would certainly like to see choices from people like Shambles, Peter T, Nightowl, Kat and others who have been around here longer than I. Thanks again LEJ |
26 May 00 - 08:21 AM (#234183) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Jon Freeman O well, I only read one of the classic threads but at least that one (the rosewood thread) was one I very much enjoyed reading. Our tastes will vary but to me, that is Mudcat at its best! Jon |

LEJ sent me a new list of classic threads, which I will add to the FAQ in a few minutes. I'm going to delete his old list from the FAQ, but I'll try to maintain a master list at the top of this thread. Thanks, LEJ. -Joe Offer- |
24 Feb 01 - 08:08 PM (#405585) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Amos Now that we have some historical perspective I really want the Mudcat Enterprise thread, begun on Earth by no less a Catter than MMario, added to the great Literature of the Cat series. 03 Feb 06 - 10:28 AM (#1661039) Subject: RE: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Azizi I found this thread in the Mudcat Newcomers' FAQ page. This statement from Joe Offer was also on that page: "Our music discussion threads build up a fascinating body of knowledge, but that information is much more valuable if it's easy to find." I would expand that statement to include examples from the BS threads. I think that we should continue to this list so that we can more easily find threads that are memorable because of their information, insightfulness, wit, creativity, emotional impact, and/or other criteria. Here's a partial listing of threads that I consider to be Mudcat Classics: Naughty Children's Greatest Hits II What if there was no Mudcat One More Time For Spaw, Please Children's Street Songs For Real. I Quit Black Britons and Folk Music Feelin The Blues **** Which Mudcat threads do you consider memorable? |
