17 May 00 - 03:51 PM (#229475) Subject: Mudcat Classic Threads From: Lonesome EJ Joe Offer, Keeper of the FAQ, is intrigued by the idea of adding a link to a select group of Mudcat Classic Threads, a list which would probably number 10 or less, but would serve as an introduction to the wide range of discussion on the Forum. Threads like Spancil Hill, the Vietnam Thread, and even the Tiple and Hoky Poky Threads might have a place. These threads could be maintained in their original forms, without addition or modification by new posters. Any feelings on this idea? Any nominations? LEJ This is the master list, including old links removed from the FAQ.

The classic threads could be in turn permafrosted to prevent additional postings, or they could be left as functioning threads. Max has expressed a desire to hold Permathreads to a minimum, so 10 classic permathreads may not be an option. |

Although I agree with the nominations above, and could think of lots more, I think that they would be better incorporated in the NewComers Guide. While the Permathread is a nice idea, I think that we should have only one of them. The top of the posting space for threads is very valuable real estate -- I would be very reluctant to add any more -- I don't want to have to look at them every time I check in -- having the FAQ is good, but no more. I think the FAQ should be restructured so it is short and has all the possible additional threads clickable from it. One is enough. yours, Peter T. |

Second among the most peerless writing samples on the 'Cat is the fictional thread that ended up with Robert Johnson picking up the flatfoot at "the crossroads". Again I have lost the name. But I know LEJ was a main voice. . Third, again on powerful fictional writing, our recent Tavern Steamboat was one of the most amazing pieces of composite fiction I have ever seen. The current Enterprise thread might turn out to be a close competitior, because Peter T has done some amazing characterization and dialogue writing in it. A |

There will be great difficulty in getting any agreement as to what constitutes, say ten of the best threads. With the new search they are all only a click away and it is great fun and very imformative just to browse through them. New folk may be discouraged from doing this if they think that the best ten threads are already displayed for them? I think we can all make suggestions as to our favourites but if a number are to be chosen to permanently represent the forum, then I feel it is only fair that the choice of those should be Max's. |

Some threads may stay on the list for a long time, and some won't - that's all up to LEJ. Note also that Alice Flynn has provided links to Memorable Mudcat Threads on our Links Page(click). The links Alice has been maintaining may tend to be a bit more permanent in nature. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, and who sent me personal messages and suggestions, and particularly Amos who suggested the format. These threads should not be looked on as a "best of" Mudcat list (although some are really good!), but as a sampling for Newcomers of the kinds of topics we talk about here, and an explanation of the nature of some of the ongoing threads and obscure references that are made. It can also be a repository for some of our favorite moments. Although I asked for suggestions and used many, I realize that the list represents my final choices, and so are not entirely objective. There are hundreds of great threads that I didn't sight, and may not even be aware of. And so, as Joe has already mentioned, except for the obvious exception of The First Thread, the Classic Threads will change as often as you like. Maybe folks would like to submit their own Classic Threads list monthly? I would certainly like to see choices from people like Shambles, Peter T, Nightowl, Kat and others who have been around here longer than I. Thanks again LEJ |
