22 May 99 - 07:54 PM (#80853) Subject: Dooley From: BFP I am looking for a tape or CD that contains the song, "Dooley". I thought I knew the tune but have been told that I don't have the chorus right. A verse goes like this: Dooley was a good ole man, He lived below the mill Dooley had two daughters And a 40 gallon still. Many thanks, BFP

18 Apr 14 - 02:22 PM (#3620112) Subject: DT Correction: Dooley (The Dillards) From: Joe Offer We have two versions of the lyrics in the Digital Tradition, neither one with songwriter attribution. Is this an entirely new composition, or does it have roots older than the Dillards? Here's #10012 - any corrections?? 18 Apr 14 - 08:43 PM (#3620171) Subject: DT Corr: Dooley (The Dillards) From: Stewie Hi Joe, I can't see any fundamental differences in the 2 versions you posted. Below is my transcription from the LP on which it was originally issued - 'The Dillards - Tribute to the American Duck Poppy LP PP-LA175-F 1973'. The attribution is to 'R.Dillard/M.Jayne Landsdowne-Winston Publ ASCAP'. Curiously, on the 1996 Raven CD reissue 'Let The Music Flow: The Best of 1963-1979' the publisher is given as Fable Music Pty Ltd. Note Mama 'CORKED' in first stanza, second stanza starting with 'Now Dooley was a trader' and 'molasses by the DRUM'. DOOLEY (Rodney Dillard/Mitch Jayne) Now Dooley was a good old man, he lived below the mill Dooley had two daughters and a forty-gallon still One girl watched the boiler, the other watched the spout Mama corked the bottles when ol' Dooley fetched them out CHORUS Dooley, slippin' up the holler Dooley, tryin' to make a dollar Dooley, gimme a swaller And I'll pay you back some day Now Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the drum The revenuers came for him, slippin' through the woods Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods CHORUS Now I remember very well the day old Dooley died The women folk looked sorry and the men stood around and cried Now Dooley's on the mountain, he lies there all alone They put a jug beside him and a barrel for a stone CHORUS [last line repeated] --Stewie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6_hXjOBAMI |
