Lyr Req: Dooley (The Dillards)

I am looking for a tape or CD that contains the song, "Dooley". I thought I knew the tune but have been told that I don't have the chorus right. A verse goes like this: Dooley was a good ole man, He lived below the mill Dooley had two daughters And a 40 gallon still. Many thanks,

BFP

I know the Dillards did that at one time, can't think of any others that have recorded it, but I'm sure someone did!

"Dooley" was also recorded by the Kingston Trio on the "Stay Awhile" album. It's a relatively easy find on the used vinyl market. Folk Era Records reissued the album on CD.

I would like the words to the song "Dooley". It has something in the lyrics about a dollar, hollar but I do know it is not Tom Dooley. I found the song but not the words. Thanks

There have also been some forum discussions on this one. Type Dooley in the Forum Search and you 'll get some hits, but will have to separate this song from Tom Dula(Dooley).

The only "Dooley" I can find by the Dillards is almost word for word what is in the DT database.

see?

Dooley - The Dillards - Written by Rodney Dillard - Mitchell Jayne

Dooley was a good 'ole man,
He lived below the mill,
Dooley had two daughters and a forty gallon still.
One gal watched the boiler,
The other watched the spout,
And mama corked bottles when 'ole Dooley fetched 'em out.

Chorus:
Dooley...
Slipping up the holler,
Dooley...
Try to make a dollar,
Dooley...
Give me a swaller and I'll pay you back some day.

Break

The revenuers came for him,
They slipped in through the woods,
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods.
Dooley was a trader,
When into town he took,
Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the ton.

Chorus

I remember very well,
The day 'ole Dooley died,
The women folk looked sorry and the men stood around and cried.
Now Dooley's on the mountain,
He lies there all alone,
They put a jug beside a man, a barrel for his stone.

Chorus

There is more than one in the Database....enter Dooley again and you'll find it at about the 7th on the list. You're looking for the Dillards and we have also mentioned them several times in threads.

Dear Kettel........Many times even old members forget to search ALL of the DT first. Entering a keyword of which you're sure can bring up songs using a slightly different title.

My information is that this song was written by Rich Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard. The Digital Tradition has no attribution. Can anybody verify the origins of this song? The DT lyrics are an exact transcription of the Dillards recording.

From: Joe Offer

We have two versions of the lyrics in the Digital Tradition, neither one with songwriter attribution. Is this an entirely new composition, or does it have roots older than the Dillards?

Here's #10012 - any corrections??

DOOLEY
(Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard)

Dooley was a good old man, he lived below the mill
Dooley had two daughters and a forty gallon still
One gal watched the boiler, the other watched the spout
And mama poured the bottles when old Dooley fetched them out

cho: Dooley, [slippin'/steppin'] up a holler
Dooley, trying to make a dollar
Dooley, give me a swaller,
And I'll pay you back some day

The revenuers came for him, sniffing/slipping through the woods
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods
Dooley was a trader, when into town he'd come
Sugar by bushle and molasses by the ton

I remember very well the day old Dooley died
The woman folk looked sorry and the men stood 'round and cried
Now Dooley's on the mountain, he lies there all alone
They put a jug beside him and a barrel for his stone

Hi Joe,

I can't see any fundamental differences in the 2 versions you posted.
Below is my transcription from the LP on which it was originally issued - 'The Dillards - Tribute to the American Duck Poppy LP PP-LA175-F 1973'. The attribution is to 'R.Dillard/M.Jayne Landsdowne-Winston Publ ASCAP'. Curiously, on the 1996 Raven CD reissue 'Let The Music Flow: The Best of 1963-1979' the publisher is given as Fable Music Pty Ltd.

Note Mama 'CORKED' in first stanza, second stanza starting with 'Now Dooley was a trader' and 'molasses by the DRUM'.

DOOLEY
(Rodney Dillard/Mitch Jayne)

Now Dooley was a good old man, he lived below the mill
Dooley had two daughters and a forty-gallon still
One girl watched the boiler, the other watched the spout
Mama corked the bottles when ol' Dooley fetched them out

CHORUS
Dooley, slippin' up the holler
Dooley, tryin' to make a dollar
Dooley, gimme a swaller
And I'll pay you back some day

Now Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come
Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the drum
The revenuers came for him, slippin' through the woods
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods

CHORUS

Now I remember very well the day old Dooley died
The women folk looked sorry and the men stood around and cried
Now Dooley's on the mountain, he lies there all alone
They put a jug beside him and a barrel for a stone

CHORUS [last line repeated]

Stewie, on the YouTube video I heard, the middle verse had the couplets reversed:

The revenuers came for him, slippin' through the woods
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods
Now Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come
Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the drum
Are you sure the recording you have has it the way you posted?

Here's the recording from the Andy Griffith show:

Joe,

On the original Poppy LP and the 2 reissues that I have, the lines are in exactly the order that I posted. They may have changed them for the Andy Griffith clip.
