I am looking for a tape or CD that contains the song, "Dooley". I thought I knew the tune but have been told that I don't have the chorus right. A verse goes like this: Dooley was a good ole man, He lived below the mill Dooley had two daughters And a 40 gallon still. Many thanks,

I know the Dillards did that at one time, can't think of any others that have recorded it, but I'm sure someone did!

"Dooley" was also recorded by the Kingston Trio on the "Stay Awhile" album. It's a relatively easy find on the used vinyl market. Folk Era Records reissued the album on CD.

The only "Dooley" I can find by the Dillards is almost word for word what is in the DT database.

My information is that this song was written by Rich Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard. The Digital Tradition has no attribution. Can anybody verify the origins of this song? The DT lyrics are an exact transcription of the Dillards recording.

I can't see any fundamental differences in the 2 versions you posted.
Below is my transcription from the LP on which it was originally issued - 'The Dillards - Tribute to the American Duck Poppy LP PP-LA175-F 1973'. The attribution is to 'R.Dillard/M.Jayne Landsdowne-Winston Publ ASCAP'. Curiously, on the 1996 Raven CD reissue 'Let The Music Flow: The Best of 1963-1979' the publisher is given as Fable Music Pty Ltd.

Note Mama 'CORKED' in first stanza, second stanza starting with 'Now Dooley was a trader' and 'molasses by the DRUM'.

On the original Poppy LP and the 2 reissues that I have, the lines are in exactly the order that I posted. They may have changed them for the Andy Griffith clip.
