But grüßt is still used in old-fashioned literary German. The umlaut is still necessary in either case. Similarly, edelweiss and edelweiß are acceptable. I put some in my rock garden, and it started to take over. I had a hard time killing it out. Rangers here in the nearby Canadian Rockies warn against trying to establish the plant here, as it can interfere with native plants. A homesick Swiss put some in a park locale here, but luckily he wrote a letter to the Editor about it and it was found and removed. |

I should not have said "correct"- it can be correct only in that it doesn't trash the meaning of the original and is poetically acceptable in the language of the translation. Having translated a book from German to English (no poetry, thankfully) I know how hard it is to take a phrase in one language and find one in the other that expresses the idea satisfactorily. |
