PENCIL SHARPENING SHANTY
(Cresby)

or Nude I Mention

Her cheeks are so rosey,
She sits there in splendour,
There's lead in my pencil
Masterpiece I'll do.

Draws down the sheet now,
The rubber is ready,
Yes lead in my pencil
Masterpiece two do.

Crunch goes the graphite,
There is no point now.
No lead in my pencil,
Masterpiece? Can't do.

My words are all blunt now,
Sharp tongues are a-wagging.
'bout lead in my pencil.
Masterpiece? Bad do!

Knives they are out now,
For conclusions drawn now,
On lead in my pencil.
Masterpiece? Poor do.

Carving the stump now,
Two inches left now
Of lead in my pencil.
Masterpiece? Boo Hoo.

Girlfriend to the rescue!
A red felt tip now,
Puts lead in my pencil
Masterpiece? That'll do.
Very Nicely

You got a tune?

Charley, I presume that the tune is The Farewell Shanty. Unfortunately, there's no MIDI file in the DT. It was recorded by The Boarding Party in the 80's, but I don't know of any other recordings. I'll be happy to make a MIDI when I have time...but that could be a very long time, so anyone else who knows the tune is welcome to add it and also post it on this thread.

Wonderful song! I love the original, but I'm also an inveterate parodist, so I think this is great.

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks, Mark. I'm familiar with "The Farewell Shanty" but missed the tune reference above in my excitment. I wonder if anyone ever came up with a "Watching Paint Dry Shanty"?

Farewell Shanty is a great leaving shanty.

Will have to pass this one on! Thanks.

Farewell Shanty has been submitted to DT - it should be in the next release or so -

Back when I used to work at our village marina in Maine, we used to have a lot of "painter" extended discussions, why the bow line on skiffs was called "the painter", the problems of applying paint wrong side up or was it wrong side down? I also remember being chewed out by the owner for polishing brass fittings on the boats tied up at the float: "You idiot," he roared, "Now they'll expect us to do that every day!" Mr Red, you still listening?

MMario, the Farewell Shanty IS in the DT. However, I passed this on to a fellow who sings the Farewell Shanty, who says this doesn't scan right, with that tune.

Can someone confirm that this song is sung to that song or is it a different song with the phrase "It's Time To Go Now"?

For what it's worth I've just sung it through to myself. I can fit it very comfortably to the Farewell Shanty tune

Sure, the Farewell Shanty tune works just fine. You do have to cram in a few words here and there, but when you turn the crank, the tune is still recognizable.

There's a bowling shanty, too, but it doesn't seem to have made it into the DT. I thought I'd posted it once but the supersearch didn't find it, and I don't have time to type the words out now...

Mark

The Bowling Shanty is at least in the threads but I could paste it in anew if someone is really frustrated, and pleads appropriately.;-)

Charley Noble
I hear you. I was only joking about the "paint drying shanty" but were you suggesting "All on the Bow Line"?
I was mildly interested but was having difficulty with the primer
viz "being given the brush-off", drips and non-drips (anyone got a rhyme for thixatropy?) towns like Brighton, Cromer (ha) and Paignton came to mind but I sort of dried-up (oh a funny and I didn't realize).
I haven't made a vynil decision, but if the motivation kicks-in who am I to gloss-over it or let it varnish without trace? Its not as if we have to walk on egshell is it? Artex - but not as we know it.
Here, I hand the batten on - oops I think I dropped it.

I knew a guy who sold equipment to test the "dryness" of paint - more sort of the residual hardness - very important QA in the automotive industry. Now he sells colour measuring devices but in the same market. Fortunately he had a patient sense of humour - had to I guess.

"Pencil Sharpening Shanty". As for the tune/word fit - it is a bit contorted particularly the important mood-setting first line and "Girlfriend" but I took the route that I had to let go the song for it to live so left it for the singer to choose.

You Brits seem to have a sharp point. Only wish I could pun as badly/goodly? as you all. Seems to be a British strongpoint. Probably a leaden issue though, after all you invented the language. On second thought, erase all the above....and I'll just pencil in my true comment.

Knowing Mr. Red personally, and having composed various folk ditties together, I can vouch for his sharpened intellect and endless witty scribbling. He always draws upon the most and least obvious. Sometimes on the same page! Even if his puns can be wooden, he gets A for effort. Watch yer backs....he won't give up until he has the point made, and the picture is complete.

Thanks Cousin Mutton Chops (well peppered) for the fulsome praise
the cheque's in the post

the geneticists amongst us will have spotted that we share common paranomasia genes on our mothers' sides

Mr. Red,

What the hell is paranomasia? Is it a Huxley invention? Or just J.B.Priestly amazing us (as always) with his command of the language?

Don't see the common genes clue either. I've never heard of red mutton chops!

Still, I like the asymmetry of thre pencil sharpening shanty. Is it possible there is original music for it......to come?

(ps - still waiting for some guesses about the origin of my handle......Mr.Red excluded from participation on basis of inside information)

yeah, what is paranomasia? There is a Greek terminus paronomasia, denoting a rhetorical trick: repeating a sentence or part of it with variations. Has nothing to do with Huxley, Priestley et al.; Demosthenes and Cicero used it some millenniums ago.

Mr. Red...........?

Please reply to questions above. Or is your pencil tip broken? (if so, it's a good thing you have a sharpening shanty!)

(p.s. - is no-one going to take a run at guesssing the origin of my handle? Clue 1 - It has nothing whatsoever to do with hair.)

Paronamasia - wordplay
must be a recessive gene - can't think of any in the "Ingram family" who were lyricists.
MC - your Grandma wrote a bit of poetry though and the opera training but no songs as far as I knew.

Actually, gentlemen, the word is spelled paronomasia. But what of it? Grammar and spelling aren't all that important, after all. As Mark Twain said, "I once heard a student in Heidelberg say he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective."

Mark

tick on of the above.

Mark Cohen - two German drinks eh? Never the Twain? What was his one adjective?
