If it is the same title, this would be a good place to add them. If not, it would be great to do a new thread to add them, and post a link here to the new thread. If you can, please include as much source informationm as possible. Thanks! ~Susan |
04 Sep 01 - 01:11 AM (#541291) Subject: Lyr Add: (AIN'T THAT) GOOD NEWS (Sam Cooke) From: Armen Tanzerian Cooke it is. (Shame on me -- he's one of my all-time heroes.)
OK, the words are:
(AIN'T THAT) GOOD NEWS
Oh my baby's comin' home tomorrow
I got a letter just the other day
In the letter she told me she still loved me
He said she's sorry that she left
Ain't that news
I said my baby's coming home tomorrow
I'm gonna have her a party at the station
And I can't wait to get her home
Ain't that news
I said my baby's coming home tomorrow
Ain't that news

04 Sep 01 - 01:16 AM (#541294) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ain't That Good News From: wysiwyg Armen, This is great. My contention is that there are boodles of blues, R&B, and other songs based on specific spirituals that remained obscure enough that the relationship was not immediately o-bivious. It is funny because we are doing these in church, and I add new verses all the time, and so I am no more a purist that Sam Cooke. But (I hope) I am also no more of a "folk sinner" than he, and others who have taken these great items and put them to work, to give them new life relevant to today. Will you check the tune once it's posted and see if it's the same, albeit bloozed-up in interpretation? ~S~ |

04 Sep 01 - 12:54 PM (#541630) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ain't That Good News From: GUEST Florence Ballard of the Supremes did a fantastic version of this song on a solo album she recorded but never released. Talk about an unfortunate soul. She had a voice not unlike Areatha's but was always kept in the background on the Supremes' songs so Diana Ross got all the glory. |

Does anyone know who it might have been & on what recording? Some of the rhymes don't work, so the words might not be exactly correct. Deep baritone voice accompanied by banjo and acoustic guitar only. I'm gonna walk and talk for my freedom - Ain't a that good news" (Repeat verse) I'm gonna walk on that line Been walking for a long long time I'm gonna walk and talk for my freedom - Ain't a that good news" I'm gonna hold my sign up high - Ain't a that good news? (Repeat verse) I want my freedom right now I won't wait until I die I'm gonna hold my sign up high - Ain't a that good news? I'm gonna walk in Mississippi - Ain't a that good news? (Repeat verse) From Georgia to Maine I'm gonna walk in freedom's name I'm gonna walk in Mississippi - Ain't a that good news? I'm gonna beat ol' Jim Crow down now - Ain't a that Good News? She was real involved with the music of the movement. I learned this from Sweet Honey in the Rock: absolutely my favorite song to sing, hands down. Dani |

I've also learned Smithsonian Folkways has a Bill McAdoo, Pete Seeger recording of I'm Gonna Walk and Talk for My Freedom, on Bill McAdoo Sings with Guitar, Folkways Recordings – 02448, 1960. Anyone out there know it? |
