Foggy memory time....

Button up your overcoat
When the wind is free
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me

Eat an apple every day
Get to bed by three
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me

Be careful crossing streets
Don't eat meat
Cut out sweets
You'll get a pain
Ruin your tum-tum

Take the spoon out of your cup
When you're drinking tea
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me

Wear your flannel underwear
When you climb a tree
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me

Steer clear of frozen ponds
Peroxide blondes
Stocks and bonds
You'll get a pain
Ruin your bankroll

.....dadadadada...have to look this up for the rest....*g*

Music and lyrics by B.G. DeSilva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson, 1929.

Putting together the verses I know with others posted above, making a few minor corrections -- and adding the all-important "0oh, ooh's," :

Button Up Your Overcoat

Music and lyrics by
B.G. DeSilva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson, 1929.
From "Follow Through."

[Sung by female:]

Listen, big boy, now that I've got you made,
Goodness, but I'm afraid something's gonna happen to you.
Listen, big boy, you've got me hooked and how.
I would die if I should lose you now

Refrain:

Button up your overcoat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.
Eat an apple every day. Get to bed by three.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

Be careful crossing streets--ooh, ooh--
Don't eat meats.--ooh, ooh--
Cut out sweets,--ooh, ooh--
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum.
Keep away from bootleg hootch when you're on a spree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

[Sung by male:]

Listen, girlfriend, you've knocked me off my feet.
I think you're very sweet, making such a fuss about me.
Listen, girlfriend--not that I'm fond of you.
I'm afraid I'm gonna worry, too:

Button up your over coat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.
Wear your flannel underwear when you climb a tree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

Don't sit on hornets' tails.-- ooh ooh--
Or on nails.--ooh ooh--
Or third rails, --ooh, ooh--
You'll get a pain an ruin your tum-tum.
Keep away from college boys when you're on a spree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

Button up your overcoat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me
Wear your flannel underwear when you climb a tree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me

Steer clear of frozen ponds, --ooh, ooh--
Peroxide blondes, --ooh, ooh--
Stocks and bonds, --ooh, ooh--
You'll get a pain and ruin your bankroll!
Take the spoon out of your cup when you're drinking tea.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me

And then my verse just for the Pacific Northwest: Click here for definition

Button up your overcoat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.
Wear your thermal underwear when you go to ski.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me
Don't run with hoods and thugs -- ooh, ooh,
Don't do drugs, -- ooh, ooh,
Don't eat slugs -- Yecccchhh!!
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum.
Keep away from Mt. St. Helens when she's on a spree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me

Go for it, Mudlark! Prob'ly have to think in terms of a lot of dust flying "...when the wind blows free."

Here is another version sung by Velma O'Neal and Jack Healy in the film Follow Through. This version is similar but a little different from what Genie posted above.

BUTTON UP YOUR OVERCOAT

[Sung by female:]

Listen, big boy, now that I've got you made,
Goodness, but I'm afraid something's gonna happen to you.
Listen, big boy, you've got me hooked and how.
I would die if I would lose you now.

Refrain:

Button up your overcoat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.
Eat an apple every day. Get to bed by three.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

Be careful crossing streets--ohh, woah--
Don't eat meats.--ohh, woah--
Cut out sweets,--ohh, woah--
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum.
Take the spoon out of your cup when you're drinking tea.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me

[Sung by male:]

Listen, girlfriend, you've knocked me off my feet.
I think you're very sweet, making such a fuss about me.
Listen, girlfriend--now that I'm fond of you.
I'm afraid I'm going to worry, too:

Button up your over coat when the wind is free.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.
Wear your flannel underwear when you climb a tree.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

Don't sit on hornets' tails.-- ooh, woah--
Or on nails.--ohh, woah--
Or third rails, --ohh, woah--
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum.
Never start an argument with a bumble-bee.
Take good care of yourself, you belong to me.

We used to have this tune on a Edison record which if any one remembers was about a 1/4 of an inch thick and took a special gold needle to play the record. The last time I heard this tune was in the 1930s

Temperance Seven sang

Note that this song was published in 1928.    Big hit in early 1929.

Remarkably good--and prescient--advice:   "Stay away from stocks and bonds."

But evidently not heeded by many.

Interesting that at least some people--at least a few songwriters--were concerned about the situation.

Must be one of the few times you get really good financial advice from a song.

Actual quote was "Steer clear of....stocks and bonds".

Sung by Ruth Etting in 1928 and by Helen Kane in 1929 (the big hit of the time). Both on youtube.com.
Many small variations in on line lyrics and order of verses (I haven't seen the sheet music).

Helen Kane lyrics:

Lyr. Add: Button Up Your Overcoat

Listen, big boy,
Now that you got me made
Goodness, but I'm afraid
Something's going to happen to you!

Listen, big boy
You gotta be hooked, and how!
I would die if I should lose you now!

Button up your overcoat
When the wind is free
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

Eat an apple every day
Get to bed by three
Take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

Be careful crossing streets
Cut out sweets, ooh-ooh!
Lay off meats, ooh-ooh!
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum!

Wear your flannel underwear
When you climb a tree
Oh, take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

Button up your overcoat
When the wind is free
Oh, take good care of yourself
You belong to me!
(Boop-boop-a-doop!)

When you see a traffic cop
Use diplomacy
Just take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

Beware of frozen ponds, ooh-ooh!
Stocks and bonds, ooh-ooh!
Peroxide blondes, ooh-ooh!
You'll get a pain and ruin your bankroll !

Keep the spoon out of your cup
When you drink your tea
Oh, take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

Don't sit on hornet's tails,* ooh-ooh!
Or on nails, ooh-ooh!
Or third rails, ooh-ooh!
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum!

Keep away from bootleg hooch
When you're on a spree
Oh, take good care of yourself
You belong to me!

I'm not familiar with the verse, but here are the chords I use:

(G) Button up your overcoat (G#),
(A) When the wind is (A7) free
(Am7) Take (D7) good (Am7) care of your(D7)self
You be(G)long to me (D7)

(G) Eat an apple every day(G#),
(A) get to bed by (A7) three
(Am7) Take (D7) good (Am7) care of your(D7)self
You be(G)long to me (G7)

Be careful (C) crossing streets Oo – oo!
(G) Don't eat meat Oo – oo!
(Em7) Cut out sweets (A7) Oo – oo!
(D) You'll get a pain and (D7) ruin your tummy

(G) Keep away from bootleg hooch,(G#)
(A) When you're on a (A7) spree
(Am7) Take (D7) good (Am7) care of your(D7)self
You be(G)long to me.

You could simplify it by leaving out the G#, staying on D7 where the Am7 is indicated and playing an Em in place of Em7.
