Can anyone help with the chords for Kate Rusby's version of "The Recruited Collier"

Hi Anne,
I've been looking too with no success. However, as I was listening to it for the umpteenth time, I felt that the tune was reminiscent of "Sweet Thames Flow Softly" by Ewan MacColl. As I have played a version of this for longer than I care to remember (or admit!), I played around and fitted some chords to "Recruited Collier" as follows:

[C] O what's the matter with [G] you, me lass,
And [F] where's your dashing [C] Jimmy?
[F] The soldier boys have [C] picked him up
[G] And taken him far [C] from me.
[F] Last payday he went [C] into town,
And [F] those red-coated [G] fellows
En[C]ticed him in and [F] made him drunk,
And [G] he's better gone to the [C] gallows.

May not be 100% correct, but it works for me. I did try putting some minor chords in, but it didn't sound right. (Perhaps I tried the wrong ones!)

Anyway, I hope this helps - if not, at least it will give you somewhere to start from.

Good Luck!

Pete N

Perhaps closer to Kate's version is the way I play it:

C                               G
What's the matter with you me lass

       Am                F         G
And where's your dashing Jimmy?

            C                     G
Them soldier boys have picked him up

       Am    Gsus4   F    C
And taken him far from me

       C                     G (or Em)
Last payday he went into town

       Am          F       G
And them red-coated fellows

    C                      G
Enticed him in and made him drunk

                Am             F      G C
And he'd better gone to the gallows

Remember that Kate plays mostly in Drop-D tuning.

Cheers,
Michael

If you like Kate Rusby you should also listen to Sharon Fountain who introduced me to Kate & who I think is very underrated. Before anyone starts that doesn't mean that I'm knocking Kate just that Sharon is definitely worth hearing both as a performer & a writer.

Sorry, I forgot to say that the reason for mentioning Sharon is that she also sings the song, as does Miriam Backhouse who I learnt it from.

Does anybody know the open tuning she uses on recruited collier. I don't think it's drop D.

Kate uses DADGBD (Double Drop-D) pretty much exclusively. Pretty sure that's what she used on TRC.

And +1 for Sharon Fountain - very talented, but hugely and shamefully unrecognised. A very fine singer indeed.

I know this thread is now a year old but just wanted to add my 2 cents:
One of my fave versions is Tony Capstick's version (from the Live At The Crypt album) which I am sure is in G (Tony seems to have favoured the key of G quite a lot) He also sings Mike Harding's song "The Wild Geese" starting on G too. It was hearing his versions that made me want to give them a try but when I try & sing them I find that with both songs they work more easily for me in C or D but I still kinda wish that I could sing them in G as Tony does as it's those versions that drew me to the songs in the first place. But anyway, great songs both! Also very well observed point by Pete N ... I hadn't noticed until I read it above but the melody to "Sweet Thames Flow Softly" is almost identical ... certainly very similar ... & another song that I've really fancied playing for a while ... so based on that ... two for the price of one really! & both really great songs!

It can be done well in DADGAD as well although I'm going to try the double dropped D as well.

I think it's in open C, actually.

Note this discussion about the lyrics of this supposedly old song and how the present version might not be as old (or as traditional) as is sometimes thought.
