Subject: Talk Dirty in Hawaiian - Lyrics?
From: steveb@lagcc.cuny.edu

I'm looking for the words to "Let's Talk dirty in Hawaiian."

I believe Fred Koller (and/or John Prine?) wrote it.

Arlo Guthrie may have covered it, don't know who else ...

Anybody know the words? It would be a big hit when I visit there next month!

Thanks!

Hi, Steve - well, you're right that it was written by John Prine and Fred Koller. Where you were led astray was in not first checking our Sacred Database, the repository of all lyrics folk. If you were to put the word "Hawaiian" (with two i's) in the search box in the upper right corner of this page, you would find two songs. This one (click here) is the one you requested, but there is yet another "Hawaiian" song to impress the natives with when you visit....
And if you searched under "hawaii*" that asterisk would help you find every word in the vast database that begins with hawaii (words like hawaii, hawaiian, hawaiianski, hawaiianovich, and many other exciting words).
Hope you don't mind the teasing. We're glad to help, and we realize that some people may not know about the database the first time around.
Oh, and if you want lots of Prine songs, check out the Prine Shrine (click here). Hope that helps.

What are the origins of the song and do the Hawaiian bits mean anything?

Sorry about that - you already have the words... Still, if we keep this one up, someone will come up with an answer!

They mean something when Lucy Ward sings the song!

As withh Maids when you're young never wed an old man, Lucy manages to make the song sound lubricious without any hard evidence in the lyrics.

lubricious, Adjective
1. Offensively displaying or intended to arouse sexual desire.
2. Smooth and slippery with oil or a similar substance.

Oh, boy, I want one of those....

Wahini - girl or woman

Tiki - a wood or stone image of a Polynesian supernatural power. Origin of TIKI. Maori & Marquesan, from Tiki, first man or creator of first man. First Known Use: 1777 ...

========
I was surprised to find that 'tiki' actually means something. The word is thrown around so casually today.

It's a cute song. Thanks.

This thread is certainly educational! Isn't lubricious a great word?

I was told that either John and Fred introduced the song by saying (tongue in cheek) that they wrote the song when World Music was becoming quite popular so they decided to cash in on the fad and write a song in another language. Since English was the only language they knew, they used onomatopoeia in order to write the Hawaiian phrases in the song. I guess they got a couple of actual Hawaiian words in there by luck.

LET'S TALK DIRTY IN HAWAIIAN
Written by John Prine & Fred Koller
As recorded by John Prine on “German Afternoons” (1986)

1. Well, I packed my bags and bought myself a ticket for the land of the tall palm tree.
Aloha, old Milwaukee! Hello, Waikiki!
I just stepped down from the airplane when I heard her say:
"Waka waka nuka licka, waka waka nuka licka! Would you like a lei? Eh?"

CHORUS: Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian. Whisper in my ear.
“Kicka pooka mocka wa wahini” are the words I long to hear.
Lay your coconut on my tiki. What the hecka mooka mooka, dear.
Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian. Say the words I long to hear.

2. It's a ukulele Honolulu sunset. Listen to the grass skirts sway,
Drinking rum from a pineapple, out on Honolulu Bay,
Steel guitars all playing while she's talking with her hands.
“Gimme gimme oka doka make a wish and wanta polka”—words I understand. Hey! CHORUS

3. Well, I boughta lota junka with my moolah and sent it to the folks back home.
I never had the chance to dance the hula. Well, I guess I should have known.
When you start talking to the sweet wahini, walking in the pale moonlight,
Ohka noka whatta setta knocka-rocka-sis-boom-boccas! Hope I said it right. Oh! CHORUS

Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian. Say the words I long to hear.
[SPOKEN] Aloha!
