Rick Fielding Tribute Concert, June 5

30 May 04 - 09:58 AM (#1197073)
Subject: Rick Fielding Tribute Concert, June 5
From: Peter T.

There is a related thread about this (Joe? link?), but I thought it would be good to have one appropriately labelled, as the event approaches. The event will be held at the Tranzac Club in Toronto (just off Brunswick and Bloor) Saturday, June 5, starting at 4 p.m. (performances starting at 6) and going on basically until we stop. If you go to www.borealisrecords.com and click on Rick's picture, you will find the first announcement of the many people who will be performing. I will post an updated list sometime this week. Local and some farflung denizens of the Mudcat Cafe will be there to pay tribute to Rick.

yours,

Peter T.

What a day! I'll be at Dave Dellinger's memorial here in VT. (somehow fitting a catering job for 125 around all of it.) I will be thinking of the Toronto bunch though, especially love to Heather.

Got a gig Friday night, and then I am on the road to Toronto. It will be good to see great friends and celebrate our Rick's life and music.

I have been conserving hugs so that I have an ample supply saved up for this event.

All the best,

Mick

Ah - I'm on early! Relief. I can sit back and enjoy the rest of the concert. I'm just a tad nervous, and there probably won't be time to arrange for instrumental assistance. (I can always do what Rick did and invite people who don't know the song to join in. Hmmm...)

I too will be joining in spirit only. However, I will make a point of playing the few CDs I have, both of Rick's and the Pattons so I can be that much closer. And I will sing and play the one song I learned from his first CD, Wild Goose. It isn't one of his songs but he kindly included chords in the liner notes so I could learn it.

Thanks for doing this guys. All my best to Heather.

Tony called me yesterday and asked if Kathy Reid and myself would do a song - so we'll be on the list too. He tells me it starts at 6:00, so we'll do something that Rick would have really liked somewhere near the start of the program.
It should be a great tribute to fine musician and friend.

I'm not really a performer, and I'm 'performing'.
Part of the reason is that I loved Rick and just want to contribute.
Another part is that, if I don't, a big canvas slip-on shoed foot will descend from heaven or wherever, and kick my ass (in a gentle, loving way). He'd constantly talk to me about my lack of confidence and how I admitted defeat before I'd even try. He'd talk about taking risks. I'm taking one.

I want to be with his other friends and loved ones and try to honor him by learning the most important thing he tried to teach me. This sort of change doesn't happen overnight, and I'm a wee bit pants-wetting terrified. There's one thing I know, though: it's not usually the mistakes people care about. It's what love and energy shine through. I'm going to try to shine.

I'm also hoping about a bazillion people feel like playing along, since I'm gonna bring song sheets w/chords!

I'm also bringing my digital camera.

Sing it like you know how to do it, m'love, and it will be fine. You are right that Rick had great confidence in you. I remember he and I standing in the back of the gym at the Getaway and just chortling over the fact that you lacked confidence. You are a talent, and you just need to go do it. Besides, I am stage manager the first hour and I will have the hook ready if you start to blow it ............ hahahahaha.

Mick

Jeri - as a more or less 'outsider' I've witnessed your performances in at least four venues - more if I count the seperate workshops I've heard you at - not to mention the fiddle sessions I've walked by - and I can honestly say that a confidence problem is the *last* thing I would ever have suspected.

Damn computer lost my last post here and it was long.......I ain't doin' it again. Suffice it to say that this will be a tremendous event and the kind of tribute and memorial that Rick is so worthy of.......Like many others, I'll be there in spirit and another "spirit" came to me in a dream the other night and he'll be there as well.

I don't go for dream analysis and this one was a no brainer as I'd been thinking of both this tribute and all of Rick's many friends so it was no surprise when Little John Cameron showed up in my dream the other night. Both of them shared stories of the other with me and also on the threads here and I'm sure they have a few more together now.

Larry, you have got to put me on the list for a tape copy!

Best to All and of course to Heather......

Err .... Tinker ....uh .....check with me next time, willya?????? LOL.

Seamus, I will do that, just as soon as I run into him. I will be looking for someone wearing a Scottish kilt, sporting a bazillion scars from playing some form of Celtic warfare (known as athletics to the rest of youse layabouts), with a horde of blue hairs hanging about, and a hipflask full of poteen. Should be aisy to spot, eh?

Larry, it is great you are coming. There are some 60 performers scheduled right now, so I am not sure if you can sneak into the lineup, but there are sure to be great song circles forming so you won't have any trouble finding an audience to perform for.

Peter, I specifically moved out of the motel on Kingston Road down by the old seminary to escape those ladies you are speaking of. I attract a much higher calibre of questionable ladies out in Scarborough. I used to draw them by playing my bodhran and pennywhistle. Now it takes the Uilleann Pipes and a five piece backing band to get them to say hello.

All the best,

Mick

I think I'll TTC down. It's a gorgeous day out there, which is good because there will be serious overflow! Business should be hopping for takeout coffee and bagels at the Future Bakery. Looking forward to hearing some great music, made by folks I already know and love, and by those I'll be hearing for the first time. Leaving my harp at home....it's just a tad huge. The day is going to be musical, and chatty, and planned, and disorganized, and improvized. Rick would be loving this, bigtime.

Love to you all. Sing and exchange hugs with one another for me, especially with our dear Heather (Mick, Jeri, Tinker, Sandy & Caroline are you listening????). Know that I'm there with you in spirit. And that I'm one of the many, many folks Rick touched deeply with his music and his gentle humanity and his humor, and... and... and... Just so many ways.

Jeri, special love and hugs to you. I know yourlove will shine past the nerves and through that strong voice of yours, and through the words you write so eloquently. Thanks for that.

I'm sure all the love and respect and sadness and joy of the songs everyone will be singing today/tonight and the stories you all will share will resound far beyond Toronto and far beyond today, just as Rick's life and music resound long after his leaving. Thank you for the light you shared, Rick. Thank you for the light you continue to share, to all Rick's friends and loved ones. Carry it on.

As you might expect, the concert was very moving, and the place was packed out (one head count suggested that over 250 people were there, at one point, who knows who came in and out, in a room for 150). People started gathering at 4, Inobu arrived in black and white, with his camera (black and white pictures?), then MMArio, Tinker, Valerie, Jeri, Tony Burns, all kinds of Mudcatters swarming the place, and a myriad others. By 9 o'clock we were only an hour behind, which was pretty good, and the formal performances stopped at 11:30 -- certainly when I left at midnight, Mudcatter Marion was only starting to jam.

Hard to pick out highlights. So many of Rick's friends and colleagues came (see the list above), played, sang songs he would have liked to hear (Tony Quarrington played a particularly fine classicalish suite of Rick's favourite songs. Mudcatter Jeri did herself proud, following the Puffins (you try and follow a five piece band!). La Swanna (p.j.) did her bodhran/mouth music spectacular, blew the place away.

The highlight of the evening for me was the eulogy given by Mose Scarlett. It was the best eulogy I have ever heard -- the audience was alternatively in tears and laughing, which is the best way to go.

Reference was made during the evening more than once to the extraordinary response that Mudcatters flooded the place with during the CD release event a couple of months ago; and it was a great source of pride to those of who knew, and still know, what this community is capable of.

yours,

Peter T.

Conspicuously missing from Peter's list of show-ups is Big Mick. He never arrived, and many of us were worried about him. We thought he said the wrong thing at the border, and Homeland Security were 'interrogating' him someplace. We called his house, we called various other places including the police in Toronto AND his hometown in Michigan. We found out he'd been picked up and delivered to a hospital. Big Mick has joined the Coronary Club, but it sounds like a mild heart attack. We talked to him on the phone, and he sounded very good. I think we're all pretty glad he didn't decide to try to drive here anyway. We're glad he didn't try to follow Bill & Sue. We love him.

The night itself was absolutely amazing. People were jammed in like sardines, but warm, friendly sardines. The music was incredible, Mose's eulogy was heart-wrenching and hilarious, and had us nodding our heads, saying, "Yep, that was Rick!" Norm Hacking's second song, Peter T's recitation...just pure love and honesty. Pam's song, partly in Irish, and with bodhran, and so many other memorable moments.

I made it through my song, and people really got why I was up there. Rick would gently nudge people towards places they were afraid to go, because that's always where magic happens.

The sun is warm today, and there's a gentle breeze blowing. It's enough for a soul to sail on. Love...

wow.....just wow, folks..I hadn't dared to read this thread, as I have been up to my clavicle in our local festival the last couple of weeks....but that ended a couple hours ago, and now I am laughing and crying and *gulp*ing at the stories and ins & outs & ups & downs.
I *truly* would have loved to be there and share the feelings. I shared time with Rick several times, and I do know what he meant to people and infectious his enthusiasm could be...for music, people and the many things that happen when musical people share other parts of their lives.   Frome the sound of it all, you gave Rick's spirit...(whatever that means)... a rousing tribute that will echo through all of us for a long time to come. Good on ya' all!

...and Mick...for Pete's sake!....Take it easy. I you back at the Getaway this fall!....

It's 2 a.m., I just got back from Toronto and I wanted to check in on this thread before slipping into a coma for the night. Thank you Heather for inviting me to come, and Peter for taking care of me, and Tony for organizing this great tribute concert.

We had such a wonderful time remembering Rick and enjoying the music of good friends, old and new-- I'm very grateful that I got to be part of it.

As I listened to an one amazing performer after another light up the stage, Peter T. sat beside me whispering little bits of history and context, and revealing the incredible depth of influence this man had in people's lives.

Some of my favorite moments included the aforementioned eulogy by Mose... great stories about performing with Rick by nearly everybody... non-stop musical prestidigitation by Tony Quarrington... beautiful voices of Mary Kelly, Eve Goldberg and the sweet sounds of the Patons...

The songs Garnet Rogers sang especially for Rick, one called Blood Brothers and the other a new piece he wrote just after hearing of Rick's death, both wonderful... some fine, fine pickin' by Ken Whiteley and Cathy & Arnie & Naeman and Chris Coole and on and on...

I loved Chris Quinn's irreverent memoirs of being Rick's student-- "...He told me I should give up, I'd never amount to anything, and who was I to think I could get up and play..." Joe Hall's brilliantly insane music... Paul Mills' chicken (followed by a great song done with an instrument Rick had given him)... the astounding talent of the very, very silly Grit Laskin...

I was also taken by Jeri's brave and touching example of the the courage Rick gave his students... and an incredibly powerful piece of poetry by our dear Peter T. on Rick as a teacher and guide. Peter's words had us all sobbing backstage just before we had to go on, and Tony Quarrington said "I knew there was a good reason I asked Peter to prepare something for tonight, but I didn't know just what the reason was until now."

I'm forgetting to mention things-- there were so many wonderful moments last night, but you'll hear about them all eventually as this thread unfolds.

One parting thought: We got a serious scare when Mick didn't show up or call and we couldn't find him. We were spending the night in the company of people we loved, missing Rick and aching over his loss, and all too present was the fear that something might have happened to another dear friend as well. I'm so glad that scare is over.

I'm awfully glad to hear that you're safe and recovering now sweetie-- I know you wanted to be there last night and I wish you could have been, but I sure am glad you're okay. Of course now you're in danger of having the STUFFING hugged out of you when we see you next, so tell the doctors to get your stuffing in good shape.

hugs all around,
pj

I sat off to one side - deliberately because for *me* I needed to observe -
but one after another performer didn't allow it; they pulled you into their performances and their reminiscences of Rick.

An incredible evening - and incredible tribute.

Jeri - as I said at one point - I don't think I have never not liked anything I've heard you do - but the song saturday was fantastic - and Rick will prove to be a giant on whose shoulders we andmany others will stand - I'm sure of it.

Peter T.'s recitation. As he started he hoped he would get through it - I can tell you I would not have been able to do it - even if I've gone into deadpan reading mode. And there was nothing deadpan about Peter's reading.

Thanks for the kind words. Here it is. This was the hardest thing I have ever read, to get through, partly because of the words, but partly because it was in the end, really for the first time, saying goodbye.

Rick was a fan of Bob Dylan's, I think in part because they had a similar kind of early experience, of being a young student of folk music, soaking up Folkways albums, of being fifteen years old and a sponge for every kind of music -- one day we were listening together to one or two cuts from his album Biograph, and talking about Bob Dylan's great monologue poem, "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie", which he recited at the memorial event for Woody, and which he just burned his way through, maybe the best thing he ever wrote. I have written something in the same style, though I am certainly no Bob Dylan: what I have written is really about being a student of Rick's, about the terrible loss, the loss of a true teacher, of which there are always so few, and I hope it speaks for all the students of Rick's who are here today......

LAST THOUGHTS ON RICK FIELDING

So you dream of a world out of reach and your fingers are itching and your brain is ticking away the years and you say now is the time or never and maybe it is never but you do not want to end like this, pressing your nose against the window pane of your own life -- and the stars for a brief moment relent in their indifference and they grant you a teacher who looks at you and says what do you want to know, and you don't even know that, you are so ignorant, but it has something to do with everything, and you start with the everything that is nothing, and then the miracle begins even before you are watching for it, and the everything that is nothing begins to turn into the something that is something, and that is what teaching is, it is not a miracle except the whole thing is a miracle, but he says this is the way in, and I will go with you and be your guide, and it is like a flood of water under a beached boat, and-- fearful step by stumble, like Tom Sawyer entering the cave, as your eyes become accustomed to your own darkness, you slowly realize that what you have entered is a cavern of immeasurable dimensions, and that among the loomings is this shadow figure, this guide, this teacher, whose own immeasureable dimension is part of this world of music you have crossed a threshold into.

And so there you are, week after week, and the binding curve of time asserts its grace, and one week it is Herman's Hermits and another it is Tom Ashley and another it is Dick Justice and another it is Bill Broonzy and another it is Leadbelly in Bb, and another it is carrying Son House's guitar, and another it is watching Rev. Gary Davis drunk one night and magnificent the next, and another it is a Sudbury monday morning, and another it is DADGAD as played by the original druids, and another it is that godless lesbian Amelia Earhardt, and another it is a young teenager, filching Folkways records and playing hookey to watch Bergman films, and always it is teaching, it is the secret signs,   it is a person as gift.

And towards the end the bitterness arises when you realize that you know too little to make the most of what he knows, that you can begin to glimpse the magnitude of what he knows, but you are still too early in the game, and that there is no time left, that there was a lifetime of learning to learn, and there is no time left, and the question that burns and will not stop for you is where do I go when I want to know, when I cannot make the moves, when the chords make no sense, when I know there is a mystery somewhere back of the sound -- how did they do that? how can I do that? --- when the record is blurred, the notes are out of reach, there is nothing to help you, and you say, how did they do that, and he says, oh they stole that from Blind Lemon Jefferson, it is originally like this, but they changed it to cheat and make it easier, like this, and he does it, and a pool of clear knowing opens to you, or you track down this video of Lonnie Johnson and he phones you and says, I remember that suit and that guitar, and I played that guitar and when you come around next I will show you how he does that and that time never comes around and what I want to know is where do I go, the bitter question of where do you go when your teacher is dead, when your one true teacher is gone, where do you go when you want a question answered, and the selfish selfcentred question I want answered is where do you go when the person you took your questions and your answers and your puzzles and discoveries to is gone, and you have no place for them anymore, and they pile up, in your room, on the street, and in your brain, and you stumble over all those piles of unanswered questions, all those discoveries, all those tiny triumphs and large griefs, and they will not let you be, and that is what I want to know, that is, what I want to know is where do I go when the only person who could tell me is the one who is gone?

There was magic in the room that night for sure, the spirit of the event was present in the faces of those on and off the stage.
Rick would have loved it.
With the help of old friends Ken Whiteley and Tony Quarington, I sang my two songs Lifeline and Same Old Song. It was especially meaningfull for me as I gazed down at the Paton's in the front row.
The last time I saw them was in thier home/studio in Conneticut, back when Rick and I recorded them many years ago.

I was looking forward to seeing Big Mick, then Heather told me yesterday that he had a heart attack.
Get well soon good buddy.
A big hats off to Tony Quarington for all his hard work putting it together.
Cheers, Glen

Also, I enjoyed getting to know Tinker a bit on Saturday and Sunday. And I'll always be able to brag that I was there for Jeri's first public performance on the guitar. You're right, Eve G., about Rick's life continuing to build the folkie community.

I gave Mick a call tonight. Claims to be fine.

I think we'll also need to hear more about the smaller branch operations of the Rick Fielding tribute... WYSIWYG, did you get a chance to learn that song? Willie-O, did you play the Lowden all night?

I sat and carefully composed this earlier today after labeling photos and three quarters of the way through my new computer crashed. UGH!! I'm writing it out separately and hope I can do it justice the second time around. I'll get photos to Jeff in just a bit, but I wanted to share a couple of moments that aren't on camera, but in my minds eye the stand out even more clearly than the snap shots.

Walking into the Tranzac club and spotting MMario crocheting yet another shawl this time in warm harvest tone heathers. The view was as warm and solid and loving as the hug I was given in greeting. It set a tone for the rest of my evening.

Standing at the bar with Heather as Peter T began to speak. My eyes kept being drawn from Heather to Peter and back again. Like the rest of the room I was rooted in the moment. Waiting to breathe in the final silence, Heather turned to me and said, "But that's how I feel." And we hugged and cried and let others into the hug. In daring to share the intensely personal, Peter, you were able to connect all of us back to Rick and to each other. Thank You.

Flash to next morning…. Big Mick is now missing for 24 hours and we've been able to find out nothing. Mudcat women don't just sit down. Knowing how much Mick loves to be fussed over we began to search. Ontario Provincial has not reported a major accident. So Scottish Constable McKnees contacts the lads in local Wayland to see if they have information they can share. In the mean times we are emailing all members of his band looking for information, tracking old Mudcat photos to see if we can find an elusive registration number, no stone left unturned. The Wayland police finally provided an answer, but the minds eye shot is of Duckboots on the phone with Mick, while Jeri, McKnees and I sit around in absolute giggles when she attempts to answer the question..."How did you track me down ?"    And then a celebratory lunch of comfort food, potato salad, macaroni salad, Miss Vicki's chips and lots of guacamole and chocolate, lots of Lindt chocolate with hazel nuts.

But the final picture is down in the basement Sunday night after the barbeque and folks have pretty much all gone home, Jeri and Marion and I are sitting in the basement passing guitars back and forth, attempting to play for and with each other. I just watched close and prayed. And at one point I looked up and realized Jeri was watching my hands to follow along. My hands ??? But then again we were in the basement of 1235 of course we were learning…

Thanks all

Of course, your hands. You were driving!

Peter's poem, and his recitation were powerful. My own 'mad as hell' phase was pretty much done before I went to Toronto for last Christmas. Good thing. The last thing Rick or Heather needed was to have to deal with my emotions on top of everything else. I was, and am, lonely without him around someplace. Who will ever understand me the way he did? Nobody. But nobody did before I met him either. It's just hell to have to go back to something that sucked, now that I'm aware it sucked.

My almost-new tuner disappeared up there, and I was pretty sure it was in my guitar case when I left the Tranzac, although anything's possible. If anyone finds it, please let me know.

How did I manage to miss THE SHAWL? I was just a tad pre-occupied, but I think I would have noticed!

We closed the concert with Eve leading assembled performers in "Sing With the Angels," and I wish I could have heard it from the audience.

Early Saturday evening I stood backstage at the Washington Folk Festival and watched as my husband and 13-year-old son played a tune on hammered dulcimer and banjo. I thought about the first time Sam ever played dulcimer in front of other people-a jamming workshop led by Rick, two years ago at the Getaway. I was not at that workshop, but folks who were told me how supportive and encouraging Rick had been; I know that he took the trouble to find me afterwards to comment on Sam's playing. But what I most remember was my son, with shining eyes, telling me about being being asked, by Rick, to play, and how much he, Sam, enjoyed that workshop. It would be difficult to give a boy, or his mom, a better gift.

The wonder of Rick's life is that there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of people with stories like ours to tell, of a man who gave such gifts to so many. I would have liked to have been able to have come to the concert, but I felt very connected to Rick Saturday night so far from Toronto.

Well, I must tell you that I am more disappointed and depressed at missing this than I can describe. I loved Rick in a way that was profound. That was part of the magic of the man. I only knew him for a fraction of the time that most of his friends (who have since become my friends) did, but he had a dramatic impact on my life, and on my music. Many seek to experience miracles in the physical world. But I believe miracles happen on a different plane. My friendship with Rick and Heather is one of those. It is nothing short of miraculous that we connected in such a short time, and in such a way. One of the most gratifying moments of my life came when Rick was having a conversation with another friend about the Mudcat, and how the community (another of those miracles)defied the perception of Internet based communities. He was talking about the friends he had made and how they had become permanent, real, and had meaning. And then he turned to me and said, to demonstrate the permanence, "and this big guy and I will be very close friends forever". On reflection, that statement of our friendship and brotherhood, and the feeling it still evokes in me, is one of those rare, treasured memories that jump into my consciousness as I am drawing my last breath. Friday last I felt him with me as I was wondering if I would see another day, along with the other loved ones whose presence I constantly feel but who have travelled on. We had disagreements, sometimes I disappointed him, but he was my friend.

Peter T, you are one of the miracles that Rick bestowed on me. Thank you for giving such a beautiful voice to what we are all struggling to say. I am said to have a big heart. But you have a beautiful heart. I am so proud of you, and I cherish our friendship.

So, of all the disappointments in my life, not being able to perform "Voices of Struggle" for Rick, and with Paul, Bill, Grit, Glen, and all the rest of you, will rank up there among the highest. But my love for my friend Rick, and my eternal friend Heather, will always be there. And his influence on my music will germinate and bear fruit.   I promise.

With all the love this hurtin' old heart can muster,

Mick

My tribute to Rick has been an ongoing one: To do one small bit of what Rick did, since he's not here to do it.

Since I am not a guitar player, that would be things like this:

<> To do what I can, that I think he might have done, when opportunities land in front of me.

<> To do the momentarily inconvenient thing that will make a difference to someone.

<> To follow through reliably, as a way of making a real thing out of my love and care for an individual.
