Mudcatters Sponsor SongLinks II track !!

11 Oct 04 - 09:37 PM (#1294803)
Subject: A Challenge to US Folkies (US-UK Song Links)
From: YorkshireYankee

I recently happened to be shooting the breeze with Martyn Wyndham-Read and the subject of "Song Links II" came up. (Some of you may already be aware of the "Song Links I" – a double CD, one of English Traditional Songs; the other their Australian variants. For more info check out Martyn's website ).

Song Links II deals with English-US "song links", and Martyn is hoping to fund it pretty much the same way he did the last one: "...funding... was not forthcoming from organisations we had hoped would want to support Song Links. My wife Danni came up with the idea of approaching the Folk Community, that is the festivals, folk clubs, interested individuals, or indeed anyone who loved the music and who would want to be part of this project, and we called this the Dan Plan. I have to say that the response, enthusiasm, goodwill, and generosity was absolutely fantastic..."

Since I'm from the US, he mentioned to me that when he contacted various US folk organizations, the response was "disappointing". As a transplanted Yank, I can tell you that this is a sterling example of British understatement; not only did he not receive a single positive response, but only 2-3 people/organizations gave him the courtesy of any response at all. I have to confess it made me feel a bit embarrassed on behalf of US folkies.

I know it's tough times in the US, but surely we, too, have the capacity for "enthusiasm, goodwill, and generosity" in support of such a worthwhile (not to mention fascinating!) project.

More info from the website:
"For the sum of £300 (~$500 US) you sponsor a track on the CD once again produced by Fellside Recordings, have a 5-line dedication within the CD booklet, giving details and contacts of your club or festival also stating why you liked that particular song or singer, or just a dedication to someone you wish to remember, the choice is yours. We are again using the Dan Plan, which was such a popular success. You also have the opportunity to buy the CD at trade price.

"The singers for the English side will be: The Copper Family, John Copper, Shirley Collins, John Kirkpatrick, Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher, The Wilsons, Mary Humphreys & Anahata, myself Martyn Wyndham-Read, and Emily Portman with Lauren McCormick and Jim Causley who are studying for a degree in Traditional Music.

"Iris Bishop will once again be Musical Co–ordinator. Jeff Davis is co-ordinating the American singers, who are: Jean Ritchie, Tim Eriksen, Jody Stecher, Bruce Molsky, Skip Gorman & Mary Burdette, Cassie Franklin, Sara Grey, Kieron Means, Sheila Kay Adams, and Jeff Davis."

I'm pleased to say that after I posted about this on a different folk mailing list, Sing Out! and The Ark have each decided to sponsor a song, but I am hoping that yet more support will be coming from the US. I to urge you to check out the Song Links Project at Martyn's website (then click on the "Song Links" link) and give it serious consideration. Even if your own group/organization cannot see its way clear to sponsor a track, perhaps you know of another group (or even a person) who could? Or maybe join forces with another group or two?

A friend of mine suggested, "I'm sure there are plenty of us who'd be able to make a donation without needing to have our name on the cut. Especially if we could do it after the election!" Perhaps we could set something up where Mudcatters could contribute individually and the resulting amount could be "from Mudcat"?

BTW, I confess that there has already been a Song Links II thread, but I thought it might be useful to start a thread which will (I hope) be more likely to attract the attention of my fellow "Yank" folkies.

Feel free to ask me any questions you might still have; if you want to contact Martyn, his @ddress is wyndham.read@ntlworld.com

Cheers,

YY
(Just so you know, I'm not on commission; I have nothing to gain from this, except perhaps a certain sense of pride in the US folk scene supporting an exciting, musically high-quality project that will enrich the world's body of folk material.)

Not that much to spare, but how about 10-20 of us here sponser a mudcat track?

I think I could go $25-50 US.

Well done bb! I could contribute $25 myself. (I wish it could be more, but things are pretty tight at the moment.) Anyone else?

What are Tim Eriksen & Cassie Franklin going to be contributing? If it's Sacred Harp related some Sacred Harp singers might get interested.

ok, if I do not make it to the Getaway, you can give checks/??? to Carly. I'll collect them ( deposit checks, etc) and find out who to forward the money to. If anyone does not trust me, make out the check to whoever the link says, and I will forward it.

Your friend's timing is way off. All of my legit friends lined up contracts, gigs, costumed historicals, 20, 15, even 8 years ago.

The U.S.A. market has been full... to bursting.... for the past five years. The only ones getting rich are the promoters as they sell dreams .... not realities .... to the wanna-be.

Worth-while "Acres of Diamonds" projects abound in each of our own neighborhoods.....no need to go scrounging a "foreign adoption."

Your cause is worthy....but most of us can find crews within a square mile....who are equally worthwhile.

Plead your/their/his/her case in your own Jerusaleum.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I try to ignore the Gargoyle, but it's worth reiterating that

Jean Ritchie, Tim Eriksen, Jody Stecher, Bruce Molsky, Skip Gorman & Mary Burdette, Cassie Franklin, Sara Grey, Kieron Means, Sheila Kay Adams, and Jeff Davis

constitute a pool of talent from the west side of "the pond" who are nothing to sneeze at.

I'm in for $25.

I'm hoping that Martyn may be able to set up something on his website so people can donate through PayPal – which would also help with the currency conversion issues. I will keep you all posted.

What is FSGW? would it help with currency conversion?

I live in England (Yorkshire, as a matter of fact) these days, and won't be attending the Getaway myself, but I can write a check for Martyn in pounds sterling, so that's not a problem for me. I know El Greko is planning to be at the Getaway, so he might be able to help "facilitate" things. (I'll pm him about it.)

Many thanks to those who've been so supportive thus far – I'm definitely starting to feel better now that we're not looking so apathetic as we did at first!

If we do this as sponsored by the MudCat - maybe we can choose one of Jean's tracks?

Just a suggestion.

Sounds extremely appropriate to me...

12 Oct 04 - 02:57 PM (#1295413)
Subject: RE: A (sort of) challenge to US folkies
From: George Papavgeris

Perhaps I can help with the collection and currency conversion, as I have PayPal on my website. I can set up a "product" called "American Mudcatters Songlinks II Contributions" and people can pay into it in multiples of, say, 5 US dollars (so, for $25 you simply "buy" 5 units). Once we have reached $540 (which is what 300 UK pounds are roughly worth today), I will close it and sponsor the track you have chosen.

Three questions:
a) Are you happy doing it this way?
b) We can't have all the names of the contributors mentioned on the booklet - but we could have a reference to "the American branch of the Mudcat Forum", or something like that.
c) Neither can we expect a free CD for each of the contributors - but they could order the CD at trade price ($8-$10) if they wish, from Martyn; I will provide him with the names of the contributors from my PayPal account, for verification.

I think this would be the easiest way to do this. Shall I go on and create the "product"?

George

It would be really appropriate and neat, imo, if Art Thieme's Cowboy Babr'ry Allen were included..it seems a prime example of just how the songs crossed the pond and were adapted.

Hi Katlaughing – Including Art's rendition of Barbry Allen is a very cool idea, but this project is not in its early stages. Logistically, they're not at a point where they can just add in another song...

Artbrooks, good idea – I'll ask Martyn & Danni.

El Greko, thanks SO much for being willing to coordinate all this and set it up on your website. That makes it SO much easier for everyone!

As far as I'm concerned, yes, please go ahead & do it (no surprise there, then). Izzat OK with everyone else?

Right, the donation facility is up and running. I have included on my website an option for "American Mudcatters Sponsorship for Songlinks II", which allows you to donate any amount you like from $1 upwards, either in US or Canadian dollars. I will keep you informed of progress as the amount (hopefully) grows.

To donate, go to El Greko's website and follow the link from the NEWS section on the front page (just under the "choirboy" drawing of yours truly).

Oh sugar! Sorry artbrooks, I will correct the "shipping" thing (it's a default from my CD sales facility).

As for refunds if we don't reach the total, I can (and will) certainly do that. PayPal allows that.

Song Links I is a beautiful double CD, with Uk artists doing traditional songs on one CD, and Aussie artists doing the australian variants on the other. Any CD that Martyn Winging Road (as we call him here) is involved in will be an outstanding collection of songs, beautifully performed. I bought 4 Song Links Cds and gave three away to friends and family - I have no doubt the next one will be just as good, and look forward to buying it when its complete.

Have tried to donate a few times but am getting some kind of error message/trouble getting through (a problem with PayPal – not with your site)... but will keep trying. (Has anyone else manage dto get through today?)

Artbrooks, I'm feeling optimistic – if everyone who's already posted saying they will donate actually does so, we should be more than halfway there already...

Bruce – Thanks for all your help!

You can write me a check in US $$. Just so you know, though, what I will probably do is use PayPal myself to then get that money to Martyn & Danni. The thing about converting funds from $ to £ (or vice versa) is that the bank/financial institution involved tends to charge a pretty hefty fee for that privilege, so it's cheaper to do it directly via a credit card.

As for having problems with PayPal, it may be cookie issues, I'll check it out. At this point, though, I'll prolly wait 'til I get the check from Bruce (and add on my $25) before trying to use PayPal again – I'd rather do it all in one swell foop...

George, have a safe trip & a great time (am sure you will)!

$125 to date towards the $550 needed...

Thanks, El G. Adding in checks I'm told will be arriving soon, that takes it to about halfway – to $250-$275(ish)...

We definitely need a few more contributors if we're going to make this fly.

My guess is that there are a lot of US Mudcatters who haven't checked out this thread yet; I also suspect that this thread is not all that likely to attract many more new readers. However, I hesitate to start yet another thread in hopes that a better title might catch the eye of a few more folks. I suppose I should have asked those of you on this thread who were going to be at the Getaway to mention it there, but it's a bit late now. So... any suggestions, anyone?

Don't think so... (see beardedbruce's post, above)

artbrooks, I like that idea... do you think Max would be willing to do it? I've only been on Mudcat about a year now (which isn't that long, IMO), and am not sure if it would be considered a "legitimate" Mudcat cause. I mean, the Mudcat CDs raise money for Mudcat, but this doesn't...

If I do decide to ask, is the best thing to do to pm Max directly, or Joe Offer, or someone else?

Thanks...

it is a little sad, isn't it that things like this seem to take such effort?

I was at a charity event the other night - they pointed out that drinks at the bar averaged $3 - and if everyone at the event skipped *ONE* drink and donated that $3 - it would result in over $500 for the charity.

I doubt that anyone's inclined to believe our resident naysayer Garg or our a-nonny-mouse Guest, but just in case you have questions this is absolutely on the up-and-up. SongLinks II is a fabulous two-CD set that is being produced as a labor of love by my dear friend Martyn and his wife Danni Wyndham-Read, two of the most honest and best people you'll ever hope to meet. Martyn has a long catalog of solo recordings to his credit, made over decades of work. He has numerous collaborative CDs. And now he is undertaking Volume II of the SongLinks project. SongLinks I is one of the best-conceived and executed projects I've ever seen, with a set of liner notes (a book, really) to die for. A Mudcat-sponsored track of our own Jean Ritchie (KyTrad)on SongLinks II would be just perfect. Count me absolutely in. If I could sponsor a whole track by myself, I would, but bb's idea to have many hands make light work of the fundraising is a great one. Thanks, one and all, but especially to those who've organized a way to collect the $$.

I've had a thought – would like to know what you others think of it:

If there are other Mudcatters you know well – and think might be interested in helping support Songlinks II but perhaps haven't spotted this thread yet – maybe each of us could PM another Mudcatter or two and suggest they check out this thread (but ONLY IF you know them well enough to know they wouldn't mind...). The rest would be up to them...

Or would that be a tad overzealous?

I could put a link to this thread up in the yellow box at the top of the Forum Menu, but I'm reluctant to. That space is for more-or-less permanent messages, not set up for easy editing or removal - and it's for things that are necessary to the operation of Mudcat. While I think the Songlines project is a very good cause, I don't think it's quite at the level of importance of the Mudcat CD's, and I think it's more temporary in nature. Let's hold off for now, since the thread seems to be continuing on its own.
But as a guilt offering for saying "no," I'll send a check to Beardedbruce.

the new thread title is more accurate, and enticing, thanks!

and Wind Words form Wyoming is a successful project...
and sociciting advanced pre-payment is a good lway to
jump start a project, and generate interest and support.
(I have my copy and am glad i do!!)

and by the way, pay pal is not restricted to credit cards..
you can use a bank account, in fact there is an advantage
to setting up your pay pal account thru a checking acc't
rather than a credit card.

how much, by the way is the cost of the c.d. for those
who donate to sponsor a track? seems like it it will take
a dozen ofr two folks to make up the track amouont of 300-
500 $ , then if each person gets a substantial discout
(at cost? is that like $3-5?) that may not be the way the
deal was intended to go...seems like the original plan may
have been to offer ONE person a discount if they pitch in
for one track??

Hi open mike,

What it says on their website is: "You also have the opportunity to buy the CD at trade price". It's not clear whether they meant just one CD or a bunch, but given that most of the Song Links I sponsors were organizations, it seems unlikely they meant just one CD. I believe that George did check with Martyn & Danni on this, and that they did say that Mudcat contributors could buy the CD at the trade price. Note: trade price is not "at cost" – it's the wholesale, direct-from-the-record-company price, which they do make some money on. So it's like Mudcat becomes another "distributor" for them to sell the CD – which should be a win-win situation.

A thought has just occurred to me: perhaps we could see if they would be willing to get all the performers (or as many as is actually possible) to autograph a CD, which could then be put in the Mudcat auction...

If people like that idea, I'll ask them about it.

El Greko tells me he's had 7 contributors and a total of $180.

I've had 5 contributors (a couple of them unusually generous) with a total of $300 (and there may or may not be another check still to come).

That takes us up to $480... spitting distance, folks!

As El Greko puts it: "...we are only 3 contributors short...(assuming $25 each)"

Unfortunately, the dollar seems to be moving down pretty quickly at the moment, so I'm hoping we can wind this up before the amount we need to raise goes up substantially!

SO – I think we've made it, folks!

Should we ask a joeclone to change our title to something triumphant? Or perhaps that should wait until all the checks have actually reached their destination(s). When we've received everything, I'll post here again, with an official list of contributing Mudcatters.

By the way, am looking for feedback concerning the idea (above, 2 Nov 04) of auctioning off a Song Links II with artists' signatures & donating the proceeds to Mudcat – if folks don't think there would be much interest, I'll leave it...

Well done everybody - an effort to be proud of and a fine example of the power of the internet generally and Mudcat specifically.

I'll be very happy to sign a special Mudcat copy of the CD, and I'm sure Mary will too.

When organizations like folk clubs sponsor a Song Links Track, one of the perks is being able to buy copies of the album at trade price. Will somebody representing Mudcat be able to do that? I'd guess Dick Greenhaus gets trade prices anyway, so I don't know if there's scope for further benefit.

There will be logistical problems with getting autographs on a CD. I am sure that most of the artists would be delighted to do this, but all the tracks were recorded independently and in two countries.
The UK launch would get most of the UK artists together, so we could get our end of the CD signed then. I don't think there is a US launch where the US artists are gathering, so that is a rather tricky problem for someone to come up with a solution to!

Subject: RE: Mudcat Effort to Sponsor SongLinks II track

Well – if folks like the idea of a signed CD to auction – one way to deal with it would be to send one of the CDs (or CD leaflets) around to all the US performers, along with a list of addresses to send it on to – a bit like a chain letter (only not with the ever-expanding pyramid-type aspect). People could cross their names off as they sign it & send it along to one of the names still on the list. Since the CDs don't come out until April or so, there should be more than enought time to accomplish this.

Aside from El Greko, still haven't really heard from people who are not on the CD... any other feedback?

What an honor that Mudcatters are sponsoring one of my tracks... I found this thread only recently, and have been tuning in every day or so,to see if it's really happening. Now if I could only sing! (my '03 flu shot has worn off and I'm slowly recuperating from a bout of the flu, with lots of coughing, teary eyes and scratchy voice). I promise to try in about a week. Maybe a good cause for Mudcat to take up (after this one) would be to find a source for flu-shots for aging folksingers?

Anyway- thanks so much to all of you. Actually you could have had a choice, as I'm doing two tracks- May Day Carol and The Cuckoo.

The Cuckoo was already "spoken for", Jean; anyway, there is a sort of link in sponsoring the Mayday Carol, as the UK version is recorded by two other Catters (Mary Humphries & Anahata, aka treewind); and I'm sponsoring that one! So both versions of the Mayday Carol will involve, and be sponsored by, Mudcatters!

And it starts with the letter M (talk about tenuous links!)

Dick Greenhaus has kindly agreed to procure copies of SLII at trade prices and pass the saving on to Mudcatters (+p&p).

13 Nov 04 - 07:36 AM (#1325554)
Subject: RE: Mudcat Effort to Sponsor SongLinks II track
From: George Papavgeris

Just spoke with Dani W-R. She thinks that it should be possible to get a copy of SLII signed by all artists, but after the launch in April (in fact they might do 2 or 3 copies anyway, it was a good idea).

Also: Dani & Martyn are OK with Mudcatters procuring copies of SLI at trade prices, also through Dick Greehaus. I will now put Dick in touch with Fellside Records, so that arrangements can be put in place. No doubt Dick will later let us all know how to go about ordering SLI and SLII through him, what the cost will be etc.

BUT NOW, AN IMPORTANT ITEM: The dedication - in the booklet accompanying the album there will be a couple of lines from the sponsor of each of the tracks. Not enough space to include individual names, as we'd said, but some appropriate words should be agreed between us. I suggest the following, and please offer your comments back:

"It is an honour and a pleasure for the American members of the Mudcat Cafe, itself an international folk music forum, to sponsor the Mayday Carol sung by Jean Ritchie, one of the prime exponents of traditional song in the US."

Good enough? Shoot!

In Martyn's first letter, he wrote that this project, even before any sponsorship, is always short of funds, and that its "staff" are knowingly taking a risk.

A few days ago, someone PMed me to ask if it's "too late to contribute". It's just occurred to me that it might be a good idea to share my response here as well...

No, it's not too late to contribute. Even though we have reached our goal, Song Links can certainly make very good use of any additional money we can raise (there are still at least a dozen un-sponsored American tracks!), so I see no reason why you shouldn't send whatever you wish to send, and your name will be included with everyone else's when I post the list of names of those who have contributed.

This also might be a good time to remind everyone of my original intent in starting this thread: if you can think of a US folk club/venue/organization that might be willing & able to sponsor a track, please mention it to them. (If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, let me know and I'll contact them myself.)

While I don't wish to be a wet blanket – I'm pleased and proud of our Mudcat response – I'm can't help being a little disappointed with the general lack of US support for this project. Last I heard, there are only THREE US sponsors (including us)! When you think of how large our country is – especially compared to Britain – it's a bit sad that SO little support has come from the US.

I'm about out of ideas on how to get the word out to potentially sympathetic ears, but if anything occurs to anyone else, please do let me know!

And I hope those who have contributed feel very good about what we've managed to accomplish here.
