Fliss, you could always stay in Sussex from 20th. January until 24th .... Have a look at The Sussex Folk Guide (http://whatson.brighton.co.uk/folk/) and you'll see that there's plenty to keep you occupied.

We're hoping to see lots of you for what has always been a magnificent day which brings out the best in singers. Our new venue at the Royal Oak in Barcombe was very successful last year as we have a bit more space, excellent acoustics and no noise from a bar. Nevertheless we were very sorry to have to leave the Ram at Firle, which had been home to this and many other musical activities for over thirty years, when it became a foodie establishment and stopped being a village pub.

The Seaford Folk Club has Quicksilver on the Friday night.

Grant Baynham (ex-That's Life) and Hilary Spencer (ex-Artisan) are absolute magic together. Loads of very funny songs, many with choruses.

I will try and fit in any floor singers that come on the night.

An excellent start to the weekend.

Bit too fast with the fingers.

You know we are about 15 miles away from Barcombe.

25 to 30 mins on Sussex roads.

Sounds great - just a shame it's so far away from Yorkshire!

"so far away from Yorkshire!"

Leeds/ Bradford Airport to Gatwick might work but of course money would be the real issue wouldn't it?

Hello, guest who wrote:

'12 hours of singers? No tunes? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAArgh!

If you look at my first post you'll see that we kick off with an hour of join-in tunes and instrumental party pieces are welcome. There's also a tunes session at the Lewes Arms from noon until 3.00 pm on Sunday.

About accommodation: I can't get at it easily from work but there is a site called something like 'Lewes-area-bed-and-breakfast.com' which has a good selection of places in the £25 - £30 a night range. Try your favourite search engine. If you go to the Lewes Tourist Information Office you'll be sent to rather more pricey places.

That accommodation website is definitely http://www.lewes-area-bed-and-breakfast.com/.

Save it in your favourite places - it'll be useful for anyone coming to one of our all-day instrument and vocal workshops at the Lewes Arms:

Lewes Arms, Mount Place, East Sussex BN7 1YH

Workshops run from 10. 45 - 4. 45 pm on a Saturday (sometimes on a Sunday as well) and the tutor performs at the club on the Saturday evening.

Booking forms are available from the club and can be printed from the website www.members.aol.com/lewesarmsfolk about three months before the event.

Good suggestion Vectis! We'd thought about that, or a proper site, but want to travel up to the Beer & Bardon session on the Sunday to celebrate Richard's birthday in style! The caravan might not be welcome there methinks :-)

Looks like we may be able to get to 'Firle' this year after all. Will be great to see everyone again and enjoy a day's singing.

Fingers crossed that we can make it!

I don't think I'm going to make it (again!) but hope you have a great time. Please keep the event going for a few years so that I can come when I've escaped the day job.

I will be in Lewes on 28 April, because Valmai has booked me....

love

Kitty

Hi Kitty,

Perhaps the thing to do is try to arrange a booking (speak to Vectis)
at Seaford for the Friday night before next years singaround. You could then stay over for the Saturday.

Dave

Dave - thanks for encouraging me (and Vectis) to get me a booking. But when I've been booked at Seaford, I've taken the day off work, because singing is an escape from my day job, not the day job. I regard bookings as a privilege and a treat, that I don't want to arrive at when I'm frazzled from the day job! Since I started going to Whitby as well as Sidmouth festival, I have to think very carefully about taking time off work for other sings and festivals...

(Valmai - this is probably thread creep, sorry!)

Yes Kitty

having to hold down a day job is a pain. I have a few more years to go before I will be able to afford to give up work.

Never the less we all try to get out to a sing when we can.

See you at Lewes in April (and perhaps one or two other places before then)

Dave

That was a wonderful day. Thanks to everyone who came and sang. The tunes session in the Lewes Arms on Sunday lunchtime was good fun as well.

Any comments about the running of the day would be gratefully received as we'll be doing it again next year and it's helpful to get comments to help us decide whether there are any changes we could usefully make.

Tootle pip,

Valmai (Lewes)

Fab day even if I did manage to lose my voice (through a bug, sadly, not too much loud singing) half way through a shanty.
Lovely to see so many from so far away.

Well that makes me feel a whole lot better (I don't think)! I'd just recovered from the lurgy I had the previous weekend, but Derek woke up with it on Saturday, so it's probably just as well we had a quiet weekend in Harrow....

Glad you had a great time!
