Subject: lyric? giant will rise (ride?) with the moon From: nick Date: 14 May 97 - 10:14 AM Help! I've been humming this tune for years-- ever since I heard it on what I took to be a live recording of Stan Rogers, but I have not found it... Anyway, heres the lyrics I remember: ... young friends and old whisky around the fire side Cast the glass down! Fingal will ride with the moon the giant will ride (maybe rise?) with the moon |
Subject: RE: lyric? giant will rise with the moon From: Bob Landry Date: 14 May 97 - 12:24 PM Congratulations on your excellent taste. I have the lyrics and music in a Stan Rogers music book and will transcribe the words and chords for you as soon as I have a chance. Since I leave on a 5-day canoe trip tomorrow, this may not be until next week. Bob |
Subject: RE: lyric? giant will rise with the moon From: Date: 14 May 97 - 03:44 PM I think you just have to hear the live performance of Giant on the Home in Halifax CD to get the full ambiance. The intro (mostly by Garnet) is wonderful. Frank Phillips |
Subject: Lyr Add: GIANT (Stan Rogers) From: Susan-Marie Date: 15 May 97 - 08:08 AM I love this song so much I've memorized it - here ya go: (and yes, Garnet's intro must be heard to appreciate the mythology) GIANT (Stan Rogers) Cold wind on the water, and rain on the road Wet promise of winter brings recourse to coal There's a fire in the blood and a fog on Bras d'Or The giant will rise with the moon.
It's the same ancient fever from the isles of the blessed
CHORUS: So crash the glass down, move with the tide
In inclement weather the people are fey
The wind's from the north, there'll be a new moon tonight
**interesting note: the Bras d'Or are known as lakes that NEVER have fog - |

Subject: RE: lyric? giant will rise with the moon From: ron k (for Susan-Marie) Date: 17 May 97 - 09:12 PM I grew up and lived in Cape Breton for at least half of my life, but this is the first time I ever heard that the Bras d'Or lakes are known for not having fog. I will blurt this out the next time I'm at a party there to see if this is common knowledge. |
Subject: RE: lyric? giant will rise with the moon From: Susan-Marie (for Ron K) Date: 19 May 97 - 09:15 AM I got that "no fog" stuff from a tourist brochure, not any kind of personal knowledge. I'd love to know if the locals agree! I've spent two vacations so far on Cape Breton and have decided that if I ever become rich I will buy a summer retreat there. I'll never forget the evenings I spent in Cheticamp listening to scottish fiddle music accompanied by French lyrics. The winters must be rough, though - where did you live? Susan.Stedman@noaa.gov |
Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: GIANT (Stan Rogers) From: Bob Landry Date: 22 May 97 - 05:44 PM Susan-Marie: As I grew up in Cape Breton, I saw many a fog cover the Bras d'Or lakes but witnessed no inexplicable activities except when my buddy Gabe was engineering one of his practical jokes. Our Druid neighbours must have been exceedingly adept at keeping their activities hidden. I transcribed the following from the book "Stan Rogers, Songs from Fogarty's Cove." There are a few minor wording differences from Susan-Marie's version. I play it with regular tuning - but then, I'm no Stan Rogers.
GIANT
(Verse 1)
(Verse 2)
(Chorus)
(Verse 3)
(Verse 4) (Repeat Chorus) (Repeat Verse 1) |
Subject: RE: lyric? giant will rise with the moon From: a gullible Susan-Marie Date: 05 Jun 97 - 01:04 PM Just goes to show that we tourists will believe anything. Bob, Ron, I humbly apologise for propagating incorrect information about the Bras d'Or. However, I am glad to know that when I go back (hopefully next summer) there are people in this forum who can give me advice on where to find the best music. :) |
