Subject: RE: English Lyrics Needed From: Bruce O. Date: 07 Jan 99 - 07:45 PM An alternative title is "Carolan's Cup" (but probably not by Carolan), #185 in D. O'Sullivan's 'Carolan'. O'Sullivan says there are 'appropriate Irish words' to the tune in O'Daly's 'Poets and Poetry of Munster', (1st series) p. 70, 1849. He also notes a poem, "Oh! proud were the cheiftans of green Innisfail", by Thomas Davis, is set to the tune in 'The Spirit of the Nation', p. 236, 1846.

Subject: RE: English Lyrics Needed From: Annraoi Date: 10 Jan 99 - 06:54 PM Mick Lowe, Well, well, well, fancy meeting you here !!! "Bruach na Carraige Báine" has at least two versions with Irish words only. One is slow and the other rather more catchy. Of English versions, I know of none. However, there exist a couple of Macaronic versions. One has been recorded by Pádraigín Ní hUallacháin, and another by Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan. Personally, I'm not all that keen on Art lyrics in English set to Irish airs. If you know the original, they make very uncomfortable listening. But perhaps the worst of all is that English cannot sustain the intricacies of Gaelic rhyme at all convincingly. Annraoi. Why aren't you putting in the accents on the long vowels, Mick ? Your last note in "another place" assured me that you'd cracked it. Good luck, A. |
Subject: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Date: 06 Oct 00 - 07:29 PM I'm looking for the lyrics to this beautiful song from the Blasket (is that spelled correctly) Islands of the coastt of County Kerry. I've heard it on tape, but without lyric's and I'm just learning and can't make them out. I'm not sure if the fada should or shouldn't be over the "a" in Báinne. Thanks in advance, Rich |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Peg Date: 09 Oct 00 - 11:25 AM I just bought the new Solas CD and Deidre Scanlon's version of this is just lovely (lovelier live, of course, but...) It is the new song I am working on at the moment so I was pleased to see a thread on it! I am trying to remember which instrumental version of it I have heard...is is Clannad? peg |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Áine Date: 09 Oct 00 - 01:09 PM Dear Peg, The only recorded version I've heard Clannad do is with the vocals on the record/CD Fuaim. BTW, what's the title of Solas' new CD? -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Peg Date: 09 Oct 00 - 02:28 PM Aine; I may be thinking of having heard the vocal version, then, but I know some CD I own has a lovely instrumental version of it! (racking my brain). The new Solas CD is entitled The Hour Before Dawn (I think?) Pretty good stuff; different without Karan of course... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Date: 09 Oct 00 - 10:27 PM I have a compilation of Chicago musicians with Dennis Cahill playing this as an air on guitar. Quite lovely. It feels good to be back in the Cafe. It's scary to think that with it down for one day I didn't know what to do with myself. Rich |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Áine Date: 10 Oct 00 - 08:33 AM Dear Peg, Thanks! I've been wondering what the group would sound like without Karan. But, I've heard Deirdre before, so now I'm looking forward to getting the new CD. Seems like I heard something about Karan beginning work on another solo CD a while back. Have you heard anything about it? There's also a great rendition of Ar Bruach na Carraige Báine on the CD entitled Ór - The Golden Age of Traditional Irish Music & Song [Gael-Linn/Hummingbird Records - GLHCD 9001]. I don't know how old the disc is - a friend of mine brought back from Dublin for me this past spring. Dear Rich, "It's scary to think that with it down for one day. I didn't know what to do with myself." -- I'm so glad that Spaw doesn't read threads like this one! ;-) -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: GUEST,Angun Date: 10 Oct 00 - 10:07 AM Áine, I think Karan Casey recently came out with a CD for children called "Seal Maiden-A Celtic Musical" Angun |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bruach na Carraige Báinne From: Peg Date: 10 Oct 00 - 10:20 AM I don't know who is playing guitar with her band now; when I saw Karan at the Burren (small venue) it was just Niall Vallelly and Donal Clancy filling in at the last minute on guitar. He was great! He is now playing with Solas... I hope she does a new CD soon. She is a mommy now and I imagine that is taking up some of her time... |
