i'm Mr. Lee from South Korea,

( i'm not good at English so..

some of my words may sounds strange to you..

first, i wanna say 'thanks' to Mudcat Staffs

for all those wonderful datum i could get at this place.

i like Brothers four, John Mary and Paul, and

other american folk singers, mainly of 60's.

Also i like to sing a few songs of these singers.

but, i couldn't find some of the lyrics of Brothers Four

on the WWW, and i would be glad

if i could get those song lyriscs on this site.

Mr. Lee,

Your English may not be perfect, but I can understand what you are saying. Welcome to the Mudcat. We have several storage areas for song lyrics.

The first is the Digitrad Database (DT) that you will see in the upper right-hand corner. I typed in [sloop john] in the white rectangle. The brackets [ ] force the search engine to look for songs with that two word phrase in them. The DT gave me one set of the lyrics you are looking for click here.

I have an alternate third verse that goes:

The second resource is the Forum here. If you go back to the main page, you will see a series of blue underlined phrases. If you click on "Forum Search" you will get another search engine. I typed "green grass of home" (do not include quotation marks " ") in the rectangle labelled "body". It led me to another set of lyrics, CLICK HERE.

I am not familiar with the other song you requested, but some able-bodied Mudcatter will probably know the song for which you are looking.

Use the blue search box in the upper right hand corner. You can enter any word(s) or phrase you remember. If you want to search for a phrase, enclose it in [square brackets]. The Sloop John B is certainly in the database and songs phrases from your other requests do come up, but I am not sure whether they are the songs you are thinking of. Happy hunting.

I forgot to mention. If you don't find a song in a DT search or a Forum search, you should post a separate thread for each song and include a phrase or title in the subject line, it increases the likelihood that you will get a postive response to your request.

Hello Mr Lee---great request --I see youve had great help looking for some fine old songs-- Sloop John B was also recorded by (The Kingston Trio ) n the Beach Boys------You can also find a copy of (green leaves of summer by Brothers Four on a movie album with ---John Wayne--- in movie-----THE ALAMO----- released in 1960 -they have that song on that soundtrack.--

Hi, Rasta - I found these two songs in fake books published by Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard. They're collections of some 1,200 songs, with lyrics, tunes, and chords. they cost about $40 US each, and are available at music stores and at the online services like Barnes and Noble or Amazon.
I haven't found a totally satisfying songbook of the "folk" songs written in the 1950's and 60's. Best I've found so far are the two Sing Out! reprints books, collections of songs that were published in the magazine.

I appreciate everyone being so polite and not noticing that I changed from Green Leaves of Summer to Green, Green Grass of Home. Oops! So sorry. I looked for "come to my bedside" in the DT with no luck. A forum search brought an Eric Andersen song. Given the era Mr. Lee likes, I suspect this is the song for which he is searching. Apparently, Gordon Bok also has a song called Come to My Bedside.

Well, this thread has brought back some memories!

In 1963 a friend of mine entered the Carmelite Monastery in Kew (Melbourne) as a postulant/novice. The night before she went in, we had a party at her family's home and I recall a particular Brothers Four record got a hammering for about 4 hours until dawn. I forget the name of the LP but it had "Greenfields" (as posted above by Joe Offer) and "The sloop John B" [as I recall it] as posted by Sinsull.

And she's still a Carmelite.

The lyrics are of questionable literacy, but I don't have the Brothers Four recording so I won't attempt to correct it. I humbly submit that my Eric Anderson transcription is far more literate - but it's probably not correct, either....

On some levels, I liked the Brothers Four back in the early 1960's. Yet, of all the widely popular folk groups of the period, I thought they seemed the most mechanical and rehearsed - more like a studio backup group in some way. They had some wonderful original (or semi-original) songs, but when they did more widely known material, it was too easy to see their interpretation as a little "stiff."

For the "Seven Daffodils" answer, there is another thread treating with that song.
