GONE TO AMERICA   -   Steeleye Span https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOYvtSppA9M

Married him in April, lost him in July
Listen to my story and I’ll tell you why
They said that he’d been poaching and stealing wine
They said I wouldn’t see him for a long, long time

Chorus:
They said he’s gone to America
To work the land that some called Virginia
They said he’s gone to America

One version of     HOME BOYS HOME happened in July.

Well who wouldn't be a sailor lad, a-sailing on the main,
To gain the good will of his captain's good name,
He came ashore one evening in July,
And that was the beginning of me own true love and I.

ANNIE MOORE aka THE BALLAD OF ANNIE MOORE
https://digital.ucd.ie/view-media/ivrla:6136/canvas/ivrla:6137

The link is to a digitalised copy of a Broadsheet ballad in the Colm Ó Lochlainn collection at University College Dublin. The lyrics put me in mind of the Irish nationalist song "The Wind that Shakes the Barley". In this case, Annie Moore is a Belfast Protestant Loyalist who was shot when infantry fired at the crowd.

SONGS ABOUT BUFFALO HUNTING
July 4, 1882 - The "Last Great Buffalo Hunt" began on Indian reservation lands near Hettinger, North Dakota . 2,000 Teton Sioux Indians killed about 5,000 buffalo. By this time, most of the estimated 60-75 million buffalo in America had been killed by white hunters who usually took the hides and left the meat to rot. By 1883, the last of the free-ranging buffalo were gone.

SONGS ABOUT LADY GODIVA
July 10, 1040 – According to legend, in an effort to force her husband, the Earl of Mercia, to lower taxes, Lady Godiva rode naked on a horse through the streets of Coventry.

THE GREAT COMPROMISE     by John Prine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2okOuZ8T_o
Great Compromise

I knew a girl who was almost a lady
She had a way with all the men in her life
Every inch of her blossomed in beauty
And she was born on the fourth of July

Well she lived in an aluminum house trailer
And she worked in a juke box saloon
And she spent all the money that I give her
Just to see the old man in the moon

I used to sleep at the foot of old glory
And awake in the dawn's early light
But much to my surprise when I opened my eyes
I was a victim of the great compromise

This song is John Prine's comment on America and the Vietnam War. He was drafted into the Army in late 1966, just as the Vietnam War was heating up. But instead of being sent to Vietnam, he ended up in Stuttgart, West Germany, where he worked as a mechanical engineer. Prine played down his military service, describing his contribution as “drinking beer and pretending to fix trucks.”

"And she spent all the money that I give her, Just to see the old man in the moon" refers to NASA and the space project Apollo.

"I knew a girl who was almost a lady"...This song came out a couple of years prior to America's bicentennial, hence, "almost a lady".
"Every inch of her blossomed in beauty, she was born on the 4th of July". when America would be 200 yrs. old, thus, a lady.
at the end, "Well she sends all the fella's love letters, saying greetings come and see me real soon..." your draft notice, if you received one, started out, "greetings, you have been inducted into the United States Army".
the lining up in a bar room is what you did the night before being shipped off to boot camp.
too much to cover it all, but one of the all time greatest songs to disguise the meaning.

In the early hours of July 4, 1925, a dilapidated Boston hotel collapsed, killing 44 of the partiers in the Pickwick Club, a speakeasy on the second floor. It is generally said that the building was brought down by the rhythmic vibrations from the crowd dancing the Charleston (to the sound of "12th Street Rag" played by McGlennon's jazz band). The following year, Arthur Fields (under the name Bob Thomas) recorded "The Pickwick Club Tragedy." To my ears, the usual mix of sentiment and moralizing goes beyond mawkish to bathetic in this composition. The Boston-based folksinger Tony Saletan included it on the 1970 album Folk Songs and Ballads; Tony does sound like he's having a hard time taking the song seriously as he sings!

THE ARGUMENT OF HIS BOOK
Robert Herrick- 1591-1674

I sing of brooks, of blossoms, birds, and bowers,
Of April, May, of June, and July flowers.
I sing of Maypoles, hock carts, wassails, wakes,
Of bridegrooms, brides, and of their bridal cakes...

================
July used to be pronounced like the name Julie. All you have to do now is make up a tune. Herrick's most famous poem is "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may."

July gets a mention in the refrain of Texas Gladden's version of "Old Kimball," and it's not on the list, so:

Old Kimball was a grey nag, old Nellie was a brown,
Old Kimball beat old Nellie on the very first go-round,

CHO:
And I see, and I see
On the first day of July
